Book excerpt: Early childhood mathematics is vitally important for young children's present and future educational success. Research demonstrates that virtually all young children have the capability to learn and become competent in mathematics. Furthermore, young children enjoy their early informal experiences with mathematics. Unfortunately, many children's potential in mathematics is not fully realized, especially those children who are economically disadvantaged. This is due, in part, to a lack of opportunities to learn mathematics in early childhood settings or through everyday experiences in the home and in their communities. Improvements in early childhood mathematics education can provide young children with the foundation for school success. Relying on a comprehensive review of the research, Mathematics Learning in Early Childhood lays out the critical areas that should be the focus of young children's early mathematics education, explores the extent to which they are currently being incorporated in early childhood settings, and identifies the changes needed to improve the quality of mathematics experiences for young children. This book serves as a call to action to improve the state of early childhood mathematics. It will be especially useful for policy makers and practitioners-those who work directly with children and their families in shaping the policies that affect the education of young children.

Book excerpt: While California community colleges are open to all students eligible and able to benefit, most students must demonstrate that they are ready for college-level academic work by passing the college's placement exam once they enroll. Because California does not explicitly define college readiness standards for high school students, the placement exams function as the de facto entry-level standards for higher education. Over 94 different placement assessments were given to entering students last year at the community colleges. This study identifies the standards represented by the myriad placement tests in English language arts and mathematics. It then compares these standards to what high school students are expected to know in the 11th grade in order to determine if what we are expecting in high school matches what students need to know to take credit-bearing courses at the community college. The results suggest that the augmented California Standards Tests (CSTs) in English language arts demonstrates sufficient alignment with the objectives measured by the most prevalent placement exams in use on California community college campuses. However, the math tests showed adequate alignment values only with respect to depth of knowledge consistency and balance of representation, falling short in many content areas in terms of categorical concurrence and range of knowledge alignment. (Contains 12 tables.).

Book excerpt: This document contains the mathematics content standards for California public schools for grades K-12. With the adoption of these content standards in mathematics, California is going beyond reform and redefining the state's role in public education. For the first time, the content that students need to acquire at each grade level is specifically stated. These standards are rigorous. The content is attainable by all students, given sufficient time, except for those few who have severe disabilities. These standards are regarded as firm but not unyielding and will be modified in future years to reflect new research and scholarship. Fifteen years from now, the adoption of these standards will be viewed as the signal event that began a rising tide of excellence in Californian schools. (Author/MVL).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results from national and international assessments indicate that school children in the United States are not learning mathematics well enough. Many students cannot correctly apply computational algorithms to solve problems. Their understanding and use of decimals and fractions are especially weak. Indeed, helping all children succeed in mathematics is an imperative national goal. However, for our youth to succeed, we need to change how we're teaching this discipline. Helping Children Learn Mathematics provides comprehensive and reliable information that will guide efforts to improve school mathematics from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. The authors explain the five strands of mathematical proficiency and discuss the major changes that need to be made in mathematics instruction, instructional materials, assessments, teacher education, and the broader educational system and answers some of the frequently asked questions when it comes to mathematics instruction. The book concludes by providing recommended actions for parents and caregivers, teachers, administrators, and policy makers, stressing the importance that everyone work together to ensure a mathematically literate society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are current testing practices consistent with the goals of the reform movement in school mathematics? If not, what are the alternatives? How can authentic performance in mathematics be assessed? These and similar questions about tests and their uses have forced those advocating change to examine the way in which mathematical performance data is gathered and used in American schools. This book provides recent views on the issues surrounding mathematics tests, such as the need for valid performance data, the implications of the Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics for test development, the identification of valid items and tests in terms of the Standards, the procedures now being used to construct a sample of state assessment tests, gender differences in test taking, and methods of reporting student achievement.

Book excerpt: Using the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics With Gifted and Advanced Learners provides teachers and administrators examples and strategies to implement the new Common Core State Standards (CCSS) with advanced learners at all stages of development in K-12 schools. The book describes—and demonstrates with specific examples from the CCSS—what effective differentiated activities in mathematics look like for top learners. It shares how educators can provide rigor within the new standards to allow students to demonstrate higher level thinking, reasoning, problem solving, passion, and inventiveness in mathematics. By doing so, students will develop the skills, habits of mind, and attitudes toward learning needed to reach high levels of competency and creative production in mathematics fields.
