This may seem a disadvantage in that polymeric containers may allow loss or contamination of their contents and aggressive substances such as water will diffuse into polymeric struc tures such as adhesive joints or fibre-reinforced composites and cause weakening. However, in some cases permeability is an advantage, and one particular area where this is so is in the use of polymers in drug delivery systems. Also, without permeable polymers, we would not enjoy the wide range of dyed fabrics used in clothing and furnishing. The fundamental reason for the permeability of polymers is their relatively high level of molecular motion, a factor which also leads to their high levels of creep in comparison with ceramics, glasses and metals. The aim of this volume is to examine some timely applied aspects of polymer permeability. In the first chapter basic issues in the mathema tics of diffusion are introduced, and this is followed by two chapters where the fundamental aspects of diffusion in polymers are presented. The following chapters, then, each examine some area of applied science where permeability is a key issue. Each chapter is reasonably self-contained and intended to be informative without frequent outside reference. This inevitably leads to some repetition, but it is hoped that this is not excessive.

This is often forgotten, especially in tropical countries like Costa Rica, renowned for their rain forests and the multitude of life forms found therein. Thus this book focusing on marine diversity of Costa Rica is particularly welcome. How many marine species are there in Costa Rica? The authors report a total of 6,777 species, or 3. 5% of the world’s total. Yet the vast majority of marine species have yet to be formally described. Recent estimates of the numbers of species on coral reefs range from 1–9 million, so that the true number of marine species in Costa Rica is certainly far higher. In some groups the numbers are likely to be vastly higher because to date they have been so little studied. Only one species of nematode is reported, despite the fact that it has been said that nematodes are the most diverse of all marine groups. In better studied groups such as mollusks and crustaceans, reported numbers are in the thousands, but even in these groups many species remain to be described. Indeed the task of describing marine species is daunting – if there really are about 9 million marine species and Costa Rica has 3. 5% of them, then the total number would be over 300,000. Clearly, so much remains to be done that new approaches are needed. Genetic methods have en- mous promise in this regard.

En el informe se proporciona un amplio examen general de esa evolucion y se estudian varias cuestiones a las que se enfrentan los pescadores y acuicultores en todo el mundo: la recuperacion de las poblaciones de peces marinos, la ordenacion de la pesca de altura y la sostenibilidad de la acuicultura de captura. En el informe se plantean otras cuestiones de trascendencia global, por ejemplo, los efectos de la pesca de arrastre en habitats benticos, la cantidad de descartes en la pesca marina a nivel mundial y la medicion de la capacidad pesquera. Asimismo se considera como podria realizarse una ordenacion sostenible de las pesquerias de agua dulce en el Africa austral respetando al mismo tiempo la importancia social y economica de dichas pesquerias. "El estado mundial de la pesca y la acuicultura 2004" concluye con algunas opiniones sobre el potencial de la pesca y la acuicultura como fuentes de alimentos en los proximos tres decenios.
