This book was released on 2018-08-20 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adaptive refinement and the complicated data structures required to support it are discussed. These data structures must be carefully tuned, especially in three dimensions where the time and storage requirements of algorithms are crucial. Another major issue is grid generation. The options available seem to be curvilinear fitted grids, constructed on iterative graphics systems, and unfitted Cartesian grids, which can be constructed automatically. On several grounds, including storage requirements, the second option seems preferrable for the well behaved scalar elliptic problems considered here. A variety of techniques for treatment of boundary conditions on such grids are reviewed. A new approach, which may overcome some of the difficulties encountered with previous approaches, is also presented. Vanrosendale, J. Book excerpt: A thoughtful consideration of the current level of development of multigrid methods, this volume is a carefully edited collection of papers that addresses its topic on several levels. The first three chapters orient the reader who is familiar with standard numerical techniques to multigrid methods, first by discussing multigrid in the context of standard techniques, second by detailing the mechanics of use of the method, and third by applying the basic method to some current problems in fluid dynamics. The fourth chapter provides a unified development, complete with theory, of algebraic multigrid (AMG), which is a linear equation solver based on multigrid principles. The last chapter is an ambitious development of a very general theory of multigrid methods for variationally posed problems. Included as an appendix is the latest edition of the Multigrid Bibliography, an attempted compilation of all existing research publications on multigrid.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elliptic Problem Solvers, II covers the proceedings of the Elliptic Problem Solvers Conference, held at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California from January 10 to 12, 1983. The book focuses on various aspects of the numerical solution of elliptic boundary value problems. The selection first offers information on building elliptic problem solvers with ELLPACK; presentation and evolution of the club module; and a fourth order accurate fast direct method for the Helmholtz equation. The text then examines the ITPACK project, CMMPAK, solving elliptic problems on an array processor system, and parallel architectures for iterative methods on adaptive, block structured grids. Topics include adaptive solution algorithm, data structure, elliptic problem solvers, input data, and vector ITPACK. The publication ponders on conjugate gradient preconditioners for vector and parallel processors; an algebra for systolic computation; and an incomplete-Cholesky factorization by a matrix partition algorithm. The book also tackles the numerical solution of a model equation near the onset of the Rayleigh-Benard instability; numerical methods for solving coupled semiconductor equations on a minicomputer; and analysis of nonlinear elliptic systems arising in reaction/diffusion modeling. The selection is highly recommended for researchers interested in elliptic problem solvers.

Book excerpt: Multi-grid methods are the most efficient tools for solving elliptic boundary value problems. The reader finds here an elementary introduction to multi-grid algorithms as well as a comprehensive convergence analysis. One section describes special applications (convection-diffusion equations, singular perturbation problems, eigenvalue problems, etc.). The book also contains a complete presentation of the multi-grid method of the second kind, which has important applications to integral equations (e.g. the "panel method") and to numerous other problems. Readers with a practical interest in multi-grid methods will benefit from this book as well as readers with a more theoretical interest.

Book excerpt: A practical handbook for understanding and using fast adaptive composite grid (FAC) methods for discretization and solution of partial differential equations (PDEs). Contains fundamental concepts. These so-called FAC are characterized by their use of a composite grid, which is nominally the union of various uniform grids. FAC is capable of producing a composite grid with tailored resolution, and a corresponding solution with commensurate accuracy, at a cost proportional to the number of composite grid points. Moreover, special asynchronous versions of the fast adaptive composite grid methods (AFAC) studied here have seemingly optimal complexity in a parallel computing environment. Most of the methods treated in this book were discovered only within the last decade, and in many cases their development is still in its infancy. While this is not meant to be comprehensive, it does provide a theoretical and practical guide to multilevel adaptive methods and relevant discretization techniques. It also contains new material, which is included to fill in certain gaps and to expose new avenues of research. Also, because adaptive refinement seems to demand a lot of attention to philosophical issues, personal perspectives are often brought freely into the discussion.

This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multilevel adaptive methods play an increasingly important role in the solution of many scientific and engineering problems. Fast adaptive methods techniques are widely used by specialists to execute and analyze simulation and optimization problems. This monograph presents a unified approach to adaptive methods, addressing their mathematical theory, efficient algorithms, and flexible data structures. Rüde introduces a well-founded mathematical theory that leads to intelligent, adaptive algorithms, and suggests advanced software techniques. This new kind of multigrid theory supports the so-called "BPX" and "multilevel Schwarz" methods, and leads to the discovery of faster more robust algorithms. These techniques are deeply rooted in the theory of function spaces. Mathematical and Computational Techniques for Multilevel Adaptive Methods examines this development together with its implications for relevant algorithms for adaptive PDE methods. The author shows how abstract data types and object-oriented programming can be used for improved implementation.

Book excerpt: This volume reviews, in the context of partial differential equations, algorithm development that has been specifically aimed at computers that exhibit some form of parallelism. Emphasis is on the solution of PDEs because these are typically the problems that generate high computational demands. The authors discuss architectural features of these computers insomuch as they influence algorithm performance, and provide insight into algorithm characteristics that allow effective use of hardware.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with problems of modern effective algorithms for the numerical solution of the most frequently occurring elliptic partial differential equations. From the point of view of implementation, attention is paid to algorithms for both classical sequential and parallel computer systems. The first two chapters are devoted to fast algorithms for solving the Poisson and biharmonic equation. In the third chapter, parallel algorithms for model parallel computer systems of the SIMD and MIMD types are described. The implementation aspects of parallel algorithms for solving model elliptic boundary value problems are outlined for systems with matrix, pipeline and multiprocessor parallel computer architectures. A modern and popular multigrid computational principle which offers a good opportunity for a parallel realization is described in the next chapter. More parallel variants based in this idea are presented, whereby methods and assignments strategies for hypercube systems are treated in more detail. The last chapter presents VLSI designs for solving special tridiagonal linear systems of equations arising from finite-difference approximations of elliptic problems. For researchers interested in the development and application of fast algorithms for solving elliptic partial differential equations using advanced computer systems.
