Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Problemstellung: Die Untersuchung turbulenter Strömungen gewinnt immer mehr an Bedeutung. Aktuelle Einsatzgebiete sind die Aerodynamik, die Untersuchung von Strömungen in hydraulischen Systemen und die Analyse und Behandlung von Strömungen des menschlichen Blutgefäßsystems, einschließlich des Herzens. Probleme, die in solchen Systemen auftreten sind unter anderem: Kavitation; aufgrund zu hoher Drücke, kann diese zu Materialabtragung oder zum Platzen von Blutgefäßen führen. Zu hohe Drücke können durch starke Scherströmungen entstehen, z.B. an Schiffsschrauben oder Pumpen oder in Leitungen bei sehr hohen Strömungsgeschwindigkeiten. Totwassergebiete, die sich in Blutgefäßen in der Nähe von Wirbeln bilden, können zur Trombosenbildung führen. Die Untersuchung von Strömungen in Flüssigkeiten ist dabei einfacher als die Untersuchung von Gasen, da die Flüssigkeiten im Normalfall nahezu unkomprimierbar sind und so wesentlich Glattheitsbedingungen auf das Strömungsfeld angewendet werden können. Eine verlässliche Strömungsmesstechnik ist einerseits wichtig um Strömungen, für die heutzutage noch keine analytische Beschreibung möglich ist, untersuchen zu können, und andererseits um neugewonnene Theoretische Erkenntnisse mit praktisch ermittelten Messwerten belegen zu können. Die derzeitig zur Verfügung stehenden Messverfahren lassen sich in punktuelle, planare und räumliche Messverfahren unterteilen. Die bekanntesten punktuellen Verfahren sind die „Hot Wire Anemometry“ (HWA) und die „Laser Doppler Anemometry“ (LDA). Beide Verfahren lassen eine sehr genaue Messung der lokalen Geschwindigkeit zu. Ihr Hauptnachteil liegt in der nicht vorhandenen räumlichen Auflösung der Messung. So ist es mit diesen Verfahren nahezu unmöglich, instationäre Vorgänge zu untersuchen. Die „Hot Wire Aneometry“ hat den weiteren Nachteil, dass durch den in die Strömung einzubringenden Draht, die Strömung selbst beeinflusst werden kann. Flächige Verfahren, die die gleichzeitige Messung innerhalb einer Ebene des Strömungsfeldes gestatte, beruhen meistens auf dem Verfahren, Aufnahmen von in das Strömungsfeld eingebrachten Partikeln oder Farbstoffen zu machen, die von einem Lichtschnitt beleuchtet werden. Die Farbstoffmethode dient jedoch hauptsächlich der qualitativen Sichtbarmachung von Strömungen, quantitative Aussagen lassen sich nur mit sehr hohem Aufwand realisieren. Traditionally, most practical applications of EA have appeared in the technical sector. Management problems, for a long time, have been a rather neglected field of EA-research. This is surprising, since the great potential of evolutionary approaches for the business and economics domain was recognised in pioneering publications quite a while ago. John Holland, for instance, in his seminal book Adaptation in Natural and Artificial Systems (The University of Michigan Press, 1975) identified economics as one of the prime targets for a theory of adaptation, as formalised in his reproductive plans (later called Genetic Algorithms).

Usual optimization goals are the minimization of the message delay in a Peer-to-Peer system or the minimization of the energy consumption of a wireless network. This thesis presents different kinds of algorithms to solve such optimization problems. Starting from the mathematical formulations for these problems, various global view optimization algorithms are presented. These algorithms are based on evolutionary algorithms and local search or similar heuristics. They can be used to quickly find near-optimal solutions, if a global view of the network is possible. As the participants in a computer network or a wireless ad-hoc network are autonomous nodes, distributed algorithms can be designed that enable these nodes to collectively solve the optimization problem. Four distributed algorithms are formulated and evaluated in this thesis, thus laying grounds for distributed optimization of networks. Using these algorithms, the network can be modelled as a self-optimizing network and the optimization problem can be approached without global view.

Book excerpt: Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods are sampling based techniques, which use random numbers to approximate deterministic but unknown values. They can be used to obtain expected values, estimate parameters or to simply inspect the properties of a non-standard, high dimensional probability distribution. Bayesian analysis of model parameters provides the mathematical foundation for parameter estimation using such probabilistic sampling. The strengths of these stochastic methods are their robustness and relative simplicity even for nonlinear problems with dozens of parameters as well as a built-in uncertainty analysis. Because Bayesian model analysis necessarily involves the notion of prior knowledge, the estimation of unidentifiable parameters can be regularised (by priors) in a straight forward way. This work draws the focus on typical cases in systems biology: relative data, nonlinear ordinary differential equation models and few data points. It also investigates the consequences of parameter estimation from steady state data; consequences such as performance benefits. In biology the data is almost exclusively relative, the raw measurements (e.g. western blot intensities) are normalised by control experiments or a reference value within a series and require the model to do the same when comparing its output to the data. Several sampling algorithms are compared in terms of effective sampling speed and necessary adaptations to relative and steady state data are explained.
