Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dealing with digitality is one of the most urgent challenges of the present. The increasing importance and spread of computer technology not only challenges societies and individuals - this development also puts pressure on the concept of digitality, which tries to grasp the totality and peculiarity of the conditions and consequences of electronic digital computing (in all its forms). However, precisely because digitality is commonplace, so should be its critique, its analysis and assessment. How can an analysis do justice to both fundamental characteristics and changing concrete forms, infrastructures, and practices? How do the developments of a digitalization that programmatically encompasses forms of networking, embedding, and autonomization shape media, cultures, and societies? How do "artificial intelligence" and "algorithmic government" relate to each other, how does the immateriality of "the digital" fit with the materiality of computers? How does the changing status and scope of this technology mediate itself? This book introduces ongoing debates and develops its own approach to the critique of digitality, asking about forms of interfaces and processes of governance. This book is a translation of the original German 1st edition Kritik der Digitalität by Jan Distelmeyer, published by Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden GmbH, part of Springer Nature in 2021. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation. Springer Nature works continuously to further the development of tools for the production of books and on the related technologies to support the authors.

Book excerpt: Evolutionary Algorithms (EA) are powerful search and optimisation techniques inspired by the mechanisms of natural evolution. They imitate, on an abstract level, biological principles such as a population based approach, the inheritance of information, the variation of information via crossover/mutation, and the selection of individuals based on fitness. The most well-known class of EA are Genetic Algorithms (GA), which have received much attention not only in the scientific community lately. Other variants of EA, in particular Genetic Programming, Evolution Strategies, and Evolutionary Programming are less popular, though very powerful too. Traditionally, most practical applications of EA have appeared in the technical sector. Management problems, for a long time, have been a rather neglected field of EA-research. This is surprising, since the great potential of evolutionary approaches for the business and economics domain was recognised in pioneering publications quite a while ago. John Holland, for instance, in his seminal book Adaptation in Natural and Artificial Systems (The University of Michigan Press, 1975) identified economics as one of the prime targets for a theory of adaptation, as formalised in his reproductive plans (later called Genetic Algorithms).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern computer networks or wireless ad-hoc networks offer a wide range of interesting optimization problems. Usual optimization goals are the minimization of the message delay in a Peer-to-Peer system or the minimization of the energy consumption of a wireless network. This thesis presents different kinds of algorithms to solve such optimization problems. Starting from the mathematical formulations for these problems, various global view optimization algorithms are presented. These algorithms are based on evolutionary algorithms and local search or similar heuristics. They can be used to quickly find near-optimal solutions, if a global view of the network is possible. As the participants in a computer network or a wireless ad-hoc network are autonomous nodes, distributed algorithms can be designed that enable these nodes to collectively solve the optimization problem. Four distributed algorithms are formulated and evaluated in this thesis, thus laying grounds for distributed optimization of networks. Using these algorithms, the network can be modelled as a self-optimizing network and the optimization problem can be approached without global view.

Book excerpt: Founded in 1931 by Otto Neugebauer as the printed documentation service “Zentralblatt für Mathematik und ihre Grenzgebiete”, Zentralblatt MATH (ZBMATH) celebrates its 80th anniversary in 2011. Today it is the most comprehensive and active reference database in pure and applied mathematics worldwide. Many prominent mathematicians have been involved in this service as reviewers or editors and have, like all mathematicians, left their footprints in ZBMATH, in a long list of entries describing all of their research publications in mathematics. This book provides one review from each of the 80 years of ZBMATH. Names like Courant, Kolmogorov, Hardy, Hirzebruch, Faltings and many others can be found here. In addition to the original reviews, the book offers the authors' profiles indicating their co-authors, their favorite journals and the time span of their publication activities. In addition to this, a generously illustrated essay by Silke Göbel describes the history of ZBMATH.

Book excerpt: Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods are sampling based techniques, which use random numbers to approximate deterministic but unknown values. They can be used to obtain expected values, estimate parameters or to simply inspect the properties of a non-standard, high dimensional probability distribution. Bayesian analysis of model parameters provides the mathematical foundation for parameter estimation using such probabilistic sampling. The strengths of these stochastic methods are their robustness and relative simplicity even for nonlinear problems with dozens of parameters as well as a built-in uncertainty analysis. Because Bayesian model analysis necessarily involves the notion of prior knowledge, the estimation of unidentifiable parameters can be regularised (by priors) in a straight forward way. This work draws the focus on typical cases in systems biology: relative data, nonlinear ordinary differential equation models and few data points. It also investigates the consequences of parameter estimation from steady state data; consequences such as performance benefits. In biology the data is almost exclusively relative, the raw measurements (e.g. western blot intensities) are normalised by control experiments or a reference value within a series and require the model to do the same when comparing its output to the data. Several sampling algorithms are compared in terms of effective sampling speed and necessary adaptations to relative and steady state data are explained.
