Book excerpt: This hypermedia CD-ROM provides an ideal format for the visual explanation of complex algorithms contained in the text Introduction to Algorithms, by Thomas H. Cormen, Charles E. Leiserson, and Ronald L. Rivest. It contains three complementary components: a hypertext version of the book itself, interactive animations of the most important algorithms, and movies explaining the use of the hypertext interface and the animations. The hypertext, including the figures, is stored in HyperCard stacks. It contains tools for navigation, text annotation, tracking of preexisting links, full-text search, and the adding of links and paths through the document. This enables instructors and students to customize the hypertext easily for classroom and personal use. The animations that are implemented in HyperCard are linked with the hypertext and can be controlled interactively by the user. They also include extensive on-line help, making them self-contained. Some animations include scripting facilities allowing users to program animations of specific data structures. The movies ("talking heads" and demonstrations) provide a way to view noninteractive versions of the algorithm animations. These are stored on the CD in QuickTime format. Peter Gloor is Research Associate in the Laboratory for Computer Science, and Scott Dynes is a Ph.D candidate in the Eaton Peabody Laboratory, both at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. As the editor of this volume points out, the Amsterdam meeting was just part of a year-long project that brought many people together from many parts of the world. The value of the effort was not only in generating new ideas, but in making people aware of work that has gone on on many fronts in using computers to make mathematics more understandable. The author was very glad he attended the workshop. * In thinking back over the conference and in reading the papers in this collection, the author feels there are perhaps four major conclusions to be drawn from the current state of work: 1. graphics is very important, but such features should be made as easy to use as possible; 2. symbolic mathematical computation is very powerful, but the user must be able to see "intermediate steps"; 3. system design has made much progress, but for semester-long coursework and book-length productions we need more tools to help composition and navigation; 4. monolithic systems are perhaps not the best direction for the future, as different users have different needs and may have to link together many kinds of tools. The editor of this volume and the authors of the papers presented here have also reached and documented similar conclusions.

The program committee accepted 16 from a total of 30 submissions. The program committee meeting was conducted electronically. The criteria for sel- tion were originality, quality, and relevance to the subject area of the workshop. Considerable e?ort was devoted to the evaluation of the submissions and to p- viding the authors with feedback. Each submission was reviewed by at least four program committee members (assisted by subreferees). A special issue of the ACM Journal of Experimental Algorithmics will be devoted to selected papers from WAE 2000.
