Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During his lifetime, L. K. Hua played a leading role in and exerted a great influence upon the development in China of modern mathematics, both pure and applied. His mathematical career began in 1931 at Tsinghua University where he continued as a professor for many years. Hua made many significant contributions to number theory, algebra, geometry, complex analysis, numerical analysis, and operations research. In particular, he initiated the study of classical groups in China and developed new matrix methods which, as applied by him as well as his followers, were instrumental in the successful attack of many problems. To honor his memory, a joint China-U.S. conference on Classical Groups and Related Topics was held at Tsinghua University in Beijing in May 1987. This volume represents the proceedings of that conference and contains both survey articles and research papers focusing on classical groups and closely related topics.

The second part consists of several collections of problems on modular Lie algebras, their representations, and the conjugacy of their nilpotent elements as well as the Koszulity of (restricted) Lie algebras and Lie properties of group algebras or restricted universal enveloping algebras.
Download or read book Free Group Rings written by Narain Gupta and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1987 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with some aspects of linear techniques in combinatorial group theory having their origin in the work of Wilhelm Magnus in the 1930s. The central theme is the identification and properties of those subgroups of free groups which are induced by certain ideals of the integral group rings of free groups. This subject has been developed extensively, and the author seeks to present, in contemporary style, a systematic and comprehensive account of some of its developments. Included in the book are a solution of the Fox subgroup problem and an up-to-date development of the dimension subgroup problem. Aimed at graduate students and researchers in combinatorial group theory, the book requires a familiarity with the general terminology of free groups and group rings.

Book Synopsis Abelian Group Theory by : László Fuchs
Download or read book Abelian Group Theory written by László Fuchs and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1989 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The traditional biennial international conference of abelian group theorists was held in August, 1987 at the University of Western Australia in Perth. With some 40 participants from five continents, the conference yielded a variety of papers indicating the healthy state of the field and showing the significant advances made in many areas since the last such conference in Oberwolfach in 1985. This volume brings together the papers presented at the Perth conference, together with a few others submitted by those unable to attend. The first section of the book is concerned with the structure of $p$-groups. It begins with a survey on H. Ulm's contributions to abelian group theory and related areas and also describes the surprising interaction between set theory and the structure of abelian $p$-groups. Another group of papers focuses on automorphism groups and the endomorphism rings of abelian groups. The book also examines various aspects of torsion-free groups, including the theory of their structure and torsion-free groups with many automorphisms. After one paper on mixed groups, the volume closes with a group of papers dealing with properties of modules which generalize corresponding properties of abelian groups.
Book Synopsis Rings with Polynomial Identities and Finite Dimensional Representations of Algebras by : Eli Aljadeff
Download or read book Rings with Polynomial Identities and Finite Dimensional Representations of Algebras written by Eli Aljadeff and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2020-12-14 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A polynomial identity for an algebra (or a ring) A A is a polynomial in noncommutative variables that vanishes under any evaluation in A A. An algebra satisfying a nontrivial polynomial identity is called a PI algebra, and this is the main object of study in this book, which can be used by graduate students and researchers alike. The book is divided into four parts. Part 1 contains foundational material on representation theory and noncommutative algebra. In addition to setting the stage for the rest of the book, this part can be used for an introductory course in noncommutative algebra. An expert reader may use Part 1 as reference and start with the main topics in the remaining parts. Part 2 discusses the combinatorial aspects of the theory, the growth theorem, and Shirshov's bases. Here methods of representation theory of the symmetric group play a major role. Part 3 contains the main body of structure theorems for PI algebras, theorems of Kaplansky and Posner, the theory of central polynomials, M. Artin's theorem on Azumaya algebras, and the geometric part on the variety of semisimple representations, including the foundations of the theory of Cayley–Hamilton algebras. Part 4 is devoted first to the proof of the theorem of Razmyslov, Kemer, and Braun on the nilpotency of the nil radical for finitely generated PI algebras over Noetherian rings, then to the theory of Kemer and the Specht problem. Finally, the authors discuss PI exponent and codimension growth. This part uses some nontrivial analytic tools coming from probability theory. The appendix presents the counterexamples of Golod and Shafarevich to the Burnside problem.
Book Synopsis Probability Theory and Its Applications in China by : Shijian Yan
Download or read book Probability Theory and Its Applications in China written by Shijian Yan and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1991 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Probability theory has always been an active field of research in China, but, until recently, almost all of this research was written in Chinese. This book contains surveys by some of China's leading probabilists, with a fairly complete coverage of theoretical probability and selective coverage of applied topics. The purpose of the book is to provide an account of the most significant results in probability obtained in China in the past few decades and to promote communication between probabilists in China and those in other countries. This collection will be of interest to graduate students and researchers in mathematics and probability theory, as well as to researchers in such areas as physics, engineering, biochemistry, and information science. Among the topics covered here are: stochastic analysis, stochastic differential equations, Dirichlet forms, Brownian motion and diffusion, potential theory, geometry of manifolds, semi-martingales, jump Markov processes, interacting particle systems, entropy production of Markov processes, renewal sequences and p-functions, multi-parameter stochastic processes, stationary random fields, limit theorems, strong approximations, large deviations, stochastic control systems, and probability problems in information theory.
Book Synopsis Partition Problems in Topology by : Stevo Todorcevic
Download or read book Partition Problems in Topology written by Stevo Todorcevic and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1989 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents results on the case of the Ramsey problem for the uncountable: When does a partition of a square of an uncountable set have an uncountable homogeneous set? This problem most frequently appears in areas of general topology, measure theory, and functional analysis. Building on his solution of one of the two most basic partition problems in general topology, the ``S-space problem,'' the author has unified most of the existing results on the subject and made many improvements and simplifications. The first eight sections of the book require basic knowldege of naive set theory at the level of a first year graduate or advanced undergraduate student. The book may also be of interest to the exclusively set-theoretic reader, for it provides an excellent introduction to the subject of forcing axioms of set theory, such as Martin's axiom and the Proper forcing axiom.
Book Synopsis Value Functions on Simple Algebras, and Associated Graded Rings by : Jean-Pierre Tignol
Download or read book Value Functions on Simple Algebras, and Associated Graded Rings written by Jean-Pierre Tignol and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-04-03 with total page 643 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is the first book-length treatment of valuation theory on finite-dimensional division algebras, a subject of active and substantial research over the last forty years. Its development was spurred in the last decades of the twentieth century by important advances such as Amitsur's construction of non crossed products and Platonov's solution of the Tannaka-Artin problem. This study is particularly timely because it approaches the subject from the perspective of associated graded structures. This new approach has been developed by the authors in the last few years and has significantly clarified the theory. Various constructions of division algebras are obtained as applications of the theory, such as noncrossed products and indecomposable algebras. In addition, the use of valuation theory in reduced Whitehead group calculations (after Hazrat and Wadsworth) and in essential dimension computations (after Baek and Merkurjev) is showcased. The intended audience consists of graduate students and research mathematicians.

Book Synopsis Algebraic Topology by : Mark E. Mahowald
Download or read book Algebraic Topology written by Mark E. Mahowald and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1989 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will provide readers with an overview of some of the major developments in current research in algebraic topology. Representing some of the leading researchers in the field, the book contains the proceedings of the International Conference on Algebraic Topology, held at Northwestern University in March, 1988. Several of the lectures at the conference were expository and will therefore appeal to topologists in a broad range of areas. The primary emphasis of the book is on homotopy theory and its applications. The topics covered include elliptic cohomology, stable and unstable homotopy theory, classifying spaces, and equivariant homotopy and cohomology. Geometric topics--such as knot theory, divisors and configurations on surfaces, foliations, and Siegel spaces--are also discussed. Researchers wishing to follow current trends in algebraic topology will find this book a valuable resource.
