Book Synopsis Algae of Australia: Marine Benthic Algae of North-Western Australia by : John Huisman
Download or read book Algae of Australia: Marine Benthic Algae of North-Western Australia written by John Huisman and published by Algae of Australia. This book was released on 2018 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine plants, or seaweeds, are unjustly perceived as one of the least charismatic groups of marine organisms. In truth they include many spectacular and attractive species; moreover, they comprise a vital component of coastal ecosystems, providing food and shelter for marine animals as well as contributing significantly to regional biodiversity. For over a decade, Dr John Huisman, in collaboration with students and colleagues, has collected and studied the marine plants of Australia's vast and remote north-west coast, these activities uncovering numerous undescribed genera and species and resulting in a manifold increase in the known flora. His accounts of the marine algae are presented in two volumes of the Algae of Australiaseries; this part, describing the red algae, follows an earlier volume (2015) describing the green and brown algae. Although not as conspicuous as the larger brown algae, the red algae are typically more diverse, with the number of species in any location more than twice that of the green and brown algae combined. This volume is an authoritative floristic account of the marine red algae of north-western Australia and includes 158 genera and 351 species, with 7 genera and 88 species newly described. Each taxonomic level, from division to species, is fully described, incorporating current nomenclature, morphology, keys, and numerous figures, many in color. These two volumes represent the first detailed accounts of the marine plants of tropical Western Australia and document numerous taxa newly recorded for the region. Features: * An authoritative account of the marine red algae of north-western Australia, covering 158 genera and 351 species * Detailed descriptions that include morphology, diagnostic keys and are illustrated with multiple photographs * Newest volume in the Algae of Australiaseries, co-published by CSIRO Publishing and the Australian Biological Resources Study (ABRS)

Book Synopsis Marine Plants of Australia by : John M. Huismann
Download or read book Marine Plants of Australia written by John M. Huismann and published by . This book was released on 2023-09-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To most people, the mention of marine plants conjures up images of rotting seaweeds piled high on the beach, or slithering threateningly around bare ankles during a paddle in the shallows. Certainly, the seaweeds do not inspire the imagination or the romanticism that is usually associated with the sea. Marine Plants of Australia might well alter that perception. This third edition illustrates over 600 species of Australia's underwater plant life, mostly using underwater photographs that reveal the amazing colours and intricate patterns found in this largely unknown realm of life. Imagine plants with blue foliage that turns red in the dark, or iridescent plants, or plants that look like rocks painted in shades of pink. There are seaweeds with the consistency of jelly, or with fronds that form an intricate mesh that rivals the best lace. These plants have evolved a startling myriad of shapes, colours and patterns that will impress everyone who views them -- underwater, or through the pages of this book.
