Book excerpt: This compilation of the American newspaperman and short story writer Damon Runyon's works is sure to leave you in stitches. Runyon was best known for his short tales celebrating the world of Broadway in New York City, a world that grew out of the Prohibition era of the early twentieth century. To New Yorkers of his generation, a "Damon Runyon character" evoked a distinctive social type from Brooklyn or Midtown Manhattan. He spun humorous and sentimental tales of gamblers, hustlers, actors, and gangsters, few of whom go by "square" names, preferring instead colorful monikers such as "Nathan Detroit", "Benny Southstreet", "Big Jule", "Harry the Horse", "Good Time Charley", "Dave the Dude", or "The Seldom Seen Kid".

He begins a new education life at the branch of physics and chemistry in California University due to his love of science. His years at university pass in poverty and he only has one friend, and also a British old friend whom he remembers sometimes and misses so much. Later, he falls in love with his new neighbour Valerie, whom he has seen for the first time in the garden in his life. Valerie is his first love in the life. He notices that his poor mother Sarah is still a worker at a textile factory, his brother has achieved nothing in his life yet and his quarrelsome father Micheal is still a drunk during the time he is home. He thinks he is right again and starts to develop intimacy with his love. This becomes possible due to Valerie's artist personality and Alfie's fondness to art. After a time, Alfie learns the truth from a colonel at the military service. He is told that his father was an old agent and his brother died in Turkey for special-ops. The colonel tells him that his family is in trouble with the Turks. Alfie turns to be a murderer in the chain of events for the sake of protecting the people who he loves both from the Turks and the gambling gang and he murders other people. Then, he begins to feel pleasure of that. He lastly murders his father and finally gets arrested owing to Valerie's betrayal after witnessing the murder. He gets judged and sentenced to execution by the electric chair. The execution is delayed for a week due to Alfie's confessions and he gets some time. He takes the advantage of his devilish mind in the jail and escapes from prison. Oddly, this becomes possible with his murdering another prisoner there. He's gone to England. He lives in a hotel room for a while. However, he can make us feel that he is insomniac. At last, he leaves the hotel room and decides to visit his English old friend. The prison-breaker, murderer, Alfie Fury disguises himself and steps forward to London streets. He finds out that his old friend passed away a short time ago. Both since he is bored of the police after him and his only love Valerie, who betrayed him, occurs in his head, he turns his route back to West Virginia city from where he wanted to stay away throughout his life. He gets caught by the police in front of Valerie's door but insists on not coming before seeing Valerie. Atfer seeing her, he tells his last words and commits a suicide by his own gun. Book excerpt: Behaving Together provides teachers with frameworks and processes to help them identify, understand and support the issues children bring to the classroom. Using a clear five step formula, the book explores the perspectives of children, to guide teachers as they support them within the school environment. The book explores the nature of emotional health and well-being and the real implications of this on the way children are seen to act within the school. Rather than punishing unwanted behaviour, the book begins with the assumption that behaviour is our innate form of communication, that should be supported rather than controlled. It recognises the network of relationships within a school’s community and provides helpful resources to support a child’s inclusion in school life, including: •Case studies highlighting the potential complexities of children’s lives •Perspectives on a range of educational contexts, including Pupil Referral Units and schools outside the mainstream •Clear definitions explaining common technical or medical jargon •Reflection points to develop teaching practice and confidence Behaving Together is a key reflective tool for teachers and those interested in the pastoral care of children. "This book is full of practical strategies outlining collaborative approaches to supporting positive behaviours." Cath Kitchen, BSc, MSc, NPQH, NLE, CEO of The Skylark Partnership "Reading it would make any mainstream teacher a better professional. I felt cleansed by it." Phil Beadle, Teacher and Author "Drawing on her substantial experience of working in Pupil Referral Units and Alternative Provision, Sarah Dove provides a helpful and wide-ranging overview of the factors - personal and organisational - that can affect pupils' behaviour." Steve Waters Founder and Director: Teach Well Alliance Sarah Dove is an experienced educator and industry leader with over eighteen years of teaching experience. Her specialist experience in Pupil Referral Units, in-patient psychiatric services, care homes and hospital schools has enabled her to support mainstream schools and local authorities to support children and reduce exclusions. The adrenaline that had brought me this far had finally run out and I collapsed to the ground. And that's when I was attacked.” Running and flying the world for over 40 years was finally coming to an end. During that time, I had become the World's most experienced Boeing 747 Captain. I had combined my flying with running the equivalent of a marathon every week for four decades. My flying career was at an end. Running had been a passion that had taken me into places and situations that were both exciting and dangerous. I could no longer fly the 747 but at least I was still young enough to run as fast as I ever could. And then I was overtaken by a butterfly.
