Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For just a few years at the beginning of the twentieth century, Munich was the ?hot spot? of Germany?s artistic avant-garde. Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc?s initiative as founding editors of the almanac Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) was a stroke of luck for the arts. The journal and exhibition of the same name made international waves when they heralded the start of the modern era in Germany before the First World War. Since then, the names of the movement?s key players Franz Marc, Gabriele Münter, Alexej von Jawlensky, August Macke et al., signal an essential chapter in the international history of art marked by the transition of painting into a vibrant, colorful and transcendental form of abstraction. This beautiful publication that dedicates itself to this topic will show a revolutionary re-valuation of the arts in an open Europe.00Exhibition: Fondation Beyeler, Riehen/Basel, Switzerland (4.9.2016-22.1.2017).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1957, German Expressionist Painting was the first comprehensive study of one of the most pivotal movements in the art of this century. When it was written, however, German Expressionism seemed like an eccentric manifestation far removed from what was then considered the mainstream of modern art. But as historians well know, each generation alters the concept of mainstream to encompass those aspects of the past which seem most relevant to the present. The impact of German Expressionism on the art and thought of later generations could never have been anticipated at the time of the original writing of this book. During the subsequent years an enormous body of scholarly research and an even larger number of popular books on German expressionist art has been printed. Numerous monographs and detailed studies on most of the artists exist now and countless exhibitions with accompanying catalogues have taken place. Much of this new research could have been incorporated in a revised edition and the bibliography certainly could have been greatly expanded to include the important writings which have been published in Germany, the United States and elsewhere since this book was originally issued. The author, however, was faced with the choice of reprinting the original text with only the most necessary alterations-such as updating the captions to indicate present locations of the paintings-or the preparation of a revised text and bibliography. Desirable as a revision appeared, present printing costs would have priced the paperback out of reach for students. It is for this reason that I decided to reissue the original text which stands on its own as a primary investigation of German Expressionist Painting.

Book excerpt: Marianne Werefkin and the Women Artists in Her Circle traces the relationships between the modernist artists in Werefkin’s circle, including Erma Bossi, Elisabeth Epstein, Natalia Goncharova, Elizaveta Kruglikova, Else Lasker-Schüler, Marta Liepiņa-Skulme, Elena Luksch-Makowsky, and Maria Marc. The book demonstrates that their interactions were dominated not primarily by national ties, but rather by their artistic ideas, intellectual convictions, and gender roles; it offers an analysis of the various artistic scenes, the places of exchange, and the artists’ sources of inspiration. Specifically focusing on issues of cosmopolitan culture, transcultural dialogue, gender roles, and the building of new artistic networks, the collection of essays re-evaluates the contributions of these artists to the development of modern art. Contributors: Shulamith Behr, Marina Dmitrieva, Simone Ewald, Bernd Fäthke, Olga Furman, Petra Lanfermann, Tanja Malycheva, Galina Mardilovich, Antonia Napp, Carla Pellegrini Rocca, Dorothy Price, Hildegard Reinhardt, Kornelia Röder, Kimberly A. Book excerpt: Animal expressions: Franz Marc's search for a universal art Franz Marc (1880-1916) became known principally for his images of animals: blue horses, yellow tigers, red fawns. What was it that led him to concentrate on painting animals? Marc himself explained his choice of subject matter in these words: "From an early date I felt humankind to be 'ugly'; animals seemed to me possessed of a greater beauty and purity..." Seeing Marc merely as a painter of animals proves, however, premature. Marc, cofounder of the Blauer Reiter group of Expressionist artists, was deeply dissatisfied with the impurity of the world, and was on a quest for a universal art which would resolve the contrarieties of life in the harmony of creation. Using pure colors highly charged with symbolic values, adopting crystalline shapes, and absorbing the influence of Cubism, he moved steadily towards an abstract order of image, coming closer to his own understanding of a better world. At the age of 36, Franz Marc's life was cut short when he died in the Battle of Verdun. About the Series: Each book in TASCHEN's Basic Art series features: a detailed chronological summary of the life and oeuvre of the artist, covering his or her cultural and historical importance a concise biography approximately 100 illustrations with explanatory captions

Book excerpt: Yes Naturally' is a large-scale, inspirational extended exhibition in and around the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague, in which artists invite us to let go of preconceived ideas about nature, culture and technology. The richly illustrated publication presents works by more than 80 artists, including Francis Al, Jimmie Durham, Olafur Eliasson, Damien Hirst, Zeger Reyers, Superflex and Ai Wei Wei. This book is about relationships - existing relationships as well as new forms of cooperation - and sets inclusion and reciprocity as necessary conditions for a better world. In the process Yes Naturally gives not just a signal but also a model to follow. Artists make us look differently at ourselves, our society and our relationship with the Earth. When the central position of human beings is put in perspective, non-human players enter the picture, like animals, plants and bacteria. Nature and culture reinforce each other.

Book excerpt: The architectural history of the Louvre stretches back to the early 13th century. A comparatively modest royal fortress, it became the royal residence under François I, friend and patron of Leonardo da Vinci. Louis XIV turned the Louvre into a splendid castle. Four years after the outbreak of the French Revolution, the Louvre opened its doors to the public. The royal art collections, with constant additions through Napoleon's military campaigns and forays as well as donations, purchases and excavations, today make the Louvre one of the world's richest and finest museums. Candida Höfer, known for her images of deserted public spaces, photographed the empty rooms and galleries of the Louvre on days when it was closed to the public. In her luminous color pictures, the treasures of Western art enter into a silent yet eloquent dialog with the architectural setting, the luxurious or sober décor, the building's past, and its present as a museum.

Book excerpt: This second volume of the catalogue of the oil paintings of Alexej von Jawlensky covers the artist's superbly exciting middle period, from his enforced departure from Munich in 1914 up to 1933, when the Nazis banned his work from exhibition. All 833 works discussed are illustrated - 340 of them in color. During World War I Jawlensky's painting underwent a radical change. In the series ""Variations on an Abstract Theme"" he stylized the view from his windows - a small garden, path, lake, mountains beyond - to a culmination of total intensity. He increasingly regarded the human face as the sign of an inner vision. The latter series ""mystical heads,"" ""Faces of the Saviour,"" and ""Abstract Heads"" pulsate with color and seem to express the combined forces of architecture, music, sculpture and dance. Introductory matter includes an essay by Angelica Jawlensky on the artist's serial painting, and unpublished correspondance with Kandinsky, Schmidt-Rottluff and Emmy Scheyer.

Book excerpt: Paul Klee's influence on a wide range of American artists is explored in-depth in this stunning book. Critics have traditionally confined Paul Klee's contribution to American art as one of "spirit," and limited to the works of the New York School and other Abstract Expressionist painters. In fact, Klee's influence on American art is more expansive, as illustrated in this study of ten artists who, through their use of automatic drawing, color field painting, symbols, and pictographs, reveal how Klee's theories and artistic methods contributed to the history of post-war American art. The ten artists explored include familiar names, such as Jackson Pollock, Robert Motherwell, Mark Tobey, Gene Davis, and Kenneth Noland, as well as lesser-known artists William Baziotes, Norman Lewis, Theodore Stamos, and Bradley Walker Tomlin. The richly-illustrated book features essays exploring Klee's legacy among various schools of American art and a chronology illustrates where and how American artists learned about Klee. It also includes a profile of each artist and their connections to Klee, followed by exquisite reproductions of their works.
