Book Synopsis Fixing the Sky by : James Rodger Fleming
Download or read book Fixing the Sky written by James Rodger Fleming and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These ideas might sound like science fiction, but in fact they are part of a very old story. For more than a century, scientists, soldiers, and charlatans have tried to manipulate weather and climate, and like them, today's climate engineers wildly exaggerate what is possible. Scarcely considering the political, military, and ethical implications of managing the world's climate, these individuals hatch schemes with potential consequences that far outweigh anything their predecessors might have faced.
Book Synopsis Historical Essays on Meteorology, 1919–1995 by : James Fleming
Download or read book Historical Essays on Meteorology, 1919–1995 written by James Fleming and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-30 with total page 613 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the occasion of its 75th anniversary, the American Meteorological Society engaged a number of eminent pioneers and leading practitioners to write about the fields they helped develop. They were joined by several professional historians of science and technology. The resulting essays constitute a substantial sampling of what has been learned since 1919 in the atmospheric sciences and services—in research, in education, and in the private sector. This volume will be of interest to weather professionals and enthusiasts, historians of science, and to students of science and history. It will help us calibrate where we are, where we have been, and where we might be going as a discipline. Hopefully it will inspire others to value the past and to dig into it more deeply. Such attention to history is a necessary step in the maturation of a scientific discipline.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is an accont of early developments in meteorological research that brings to life the struggles of young pioneers—the trials and tribulations of developing new instruments, and the difficulty of sampling the atmosphere under challenging working conditions, to name just two. The book adds to the rich heritage of meteorological literature, documenting all the "firsts" achieved by this important weather observatory. An extensive bibliography of work by Observatroy personnel and source references to the Observatory's climatological data are provided. Heavily illustrated and richly detailed, this book will be of value to weather enthusiasts interested in the development of the science of meteorology, as well as to practicing meteorologists and weather historians wanting to study the growth of their scientific discipline.
Book Synopsis Science in Uniform, Uniforms in Science by : Margaret Vining
Download or read book Science in Uniform, Uniforms in Science written by Margaret Vining and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science in Uniform, Uniforms in Science: Historical Studies of American Military and Scientific Interactions is a collection of essays, which owes its existence to the fortuitous conjunction of two events. The first was a temporary exhibition at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History in Washington that opened in October 2002, entitled "West Point in the Making of America, 1802-1918." Sponsored by the U.S. Army, it commemorated the bicentennial of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Rather than recount the academy's history, however, this exhibit focused on the lives and work of a select group of West Point graduates, some famous, others less well known, in the context of American national development from the beginning of the 19th century through the First World War. One of the exhibit's central themes was the significant part West Pointers played in the creation of American science and engineering. An extraordinary display of objects, such as natural history specimens sent by antebellum soldier-explorers in the West to the newly formed Smithsonian Institution, augmented the biographical narratives with visual and material historical evidence. Sixteen months later, in January 2004, the annual meeting of the American Historical Association came to the same city. The AHA seemed to offer a perfect venue for the exhibit's final public program, a symposium on the historic links between America's armed forces and the development of American science and technology. Not all those who participated in the symposium were able to prepare articles for this volume, but this book nonetheless represents an impressive cross-section of work being done on an important but too often overlooked aspect of American history.
