While these claims recall a special brand of witch-trial era hysteria, author Cornelius defends these accusations as entirely true. Aleister Crowley, the greatest ceremonial magician of the 20th century, advocated the Ouija board's use as an occult tool. This fascinating work combines a history of the Ouija Board, Crowley's writings on this device and practical advice on its proper use.

Book excerpt: A sweeping, interwoven story of how America fell in love with the Occult Here's to My Sweet Satan is the first book to fully document the Occult craze of the 1960s and 1970s as a single pop culture phenomenon that continues to influence nearly every aspect of culture today. A masterful cultural history, Here's to My Sweet Satan tells how the Occult conquered the American imagination, weaving together topics as diverse as the birth of heavy metal, 1970s horror films, the New Age movement, Count Chocula cereal, the serial killer Son of Sam, and more. Cultural critic George Case explores how the Occult craze permanently changed American society, creating the cultural framework for the political power of the religious right, false accusations of Satanic child abuse, and today's widespread rejection of science and rationality. An insightful blend of pop culture and social history, Here's to My Sweet Satan lucidly explains how the most technological society on earth became enthralled by the supernatural.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite their centuries-old history and traditions, witchcraft and magic are still very much a part of modern Anglo-American culture. In Lucifer Ascending, Bill Ellis looks at modern practices that are universally defined as "occult," from commonplace habits such as carrying a rabbit's foot for good luck or using a Ouija board, to more esoteric traditions, such as the use of spell books. In particular, Ellis shows how the occult has been a common element in youth culture for hundreds of years. Using materials from little known publications and archives, Lucifer Ascending details the true social function of individuals' dabbling with the occult. In his survey of what Ellis terms "vernacular occultism," the author is poised on a middle ground between a skeptical point of view that defines belief in witchcraft and Satan as irrational and an interpretation of witchcraft as an underground religion opposing Christianity. Lucifer Ascending examines the occult not as an alternative to religion but rather as a means for ordinary people to participate directly in the mythic realm.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of essays of the McMurtry-Cornelius lineage of Aleister Crowley's A.'.A.'. This is Essays No.6, containing no magickal or theoretical essays, and only 33 biographies of the most important women with whom Crowley was involved throughout his life. Who were the women in Aleister Crowley¿s life? For so long, with the details of their lives scattered in passing through Crowley biographies or hidden away in private sources, Crowley¿s women have presented an enigma to Thelemites. What motivated them? What were they like? Where did they come from? And what ever happened to them when they were no longer with Crowley? For the first time ever, biographies of Crowley¿s women are available. J. Edward Cornelius has painstakingly researched, often in sources not widely accessible, to bring you the life histories of the thirty-three female lovers who were most significant to Aleister Crowley (1875¿1947). He has collected their biographies here, in this volume of Essays, especially for you to enjoy and ponder. As richly as possible, Cornelius has painted a picture of each woman. He has detailed each woman¿s birth, family background, education, activities, antics, achievements, marriages, children, and death.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edited, with an Introduction, by William Breeze. Foreword by David Tibet. This volume brings together the uncollected short fiction of the poet, writer and religious philosopher Aleister Crowley (1875 - 1947). Crowley was a successful critic, editor and author of fiction from 1908 to 1922, and his short stories are long overdue for discovery. Of the fifty-two stories in the present volume, only thirty were published in his lifetime. Most of the rest appear here for the first time. Like their author, Crowley's stories are fun, smart, witty, thought-provoking and sometimes unsettling. They are set in places he had lived and knew well: Belle Epoque Paris, Edwardian London, pre-revolutionary Russia and America during the first World War. The title story The Drug stands as one of the first - if not the first - accounts of a psychedelic experience. His Black and Silver is a knowing early noir discovery that anticipates an entire genre. Atlantis is a masterpiece of occult fantasy, a dark satire that can stand with Samuel Butler's Erewhon. Frank Harris considered The Testament of Magdalen Blair the most terrifying tale ever written. Extensive editorial end-notes give full details about the stories.

Book excerpt: From its earliest days, America served as an arena for the revolutions in alternative spirituality that eventually swept the globe. Esoteric philosophies and personas—from Freemasonry to Spiritualism, from Madame H. P. Blavatsky to Edgar Cayce—dramatically altered the nation’s culture, politics, and religion. Yet the mystical roots of our identity are often ignored or overlooked. Opening a new window on the past, Occult America presents a dramatic, pioneering study of the esoteric undercurrents of our history and their profound impact across modern life.

Book excerpt: A collection of essays of the McMurtry-Cornelius lineage of Aleister Crowley's A.'.A.'. The essays were written by J. Edward and Erica M Cornelius. Many were written in response to a student's request for information which they deemed not clearly explained in Crowley's writings. Since many students ask the same questions, J. Edward Cornelius started writing his replies in the form of essays which could later be handed out or emailed to other students who might be asking the same if not similar questions. In this light the essays run the gamut of thought from easy magickal foundational information to more intricate theories related to the Qabalistic spheres on the Tree of Life in which the student resides. It is also important to note that some of these essays were written to male students, while others were written to female students. All these essays are considered foundational stones designed to open a dialogue between a student and their teacher on often-difficult topics. This issue features J. Edward Cornelius' essay on the Path of Art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With Tell Me Why I'm Still in the OTO, J. Edward Cornelius continues his much-needed memoir series about being a member of Aleister Crowley's Ordo Templi Orientis (OTO). Rather than leaving Thelemic history to be told by propagandists who obfuscate facts and mutate their stories as needed, Cornelius writes as one of the few movers-and-shakers in OTO who also kept good records! These Memoirs cover the period from 1993 to 1996, the years directly following the period of 1989 to 1993 which are detailed in his previous volume, The Changing of the Guard. The volume discloses that the Bay Area problems are not rooted in the man of Earth degrees as it seemed during the time period covered in the previous volume. Rather, it is coming from within the Fifth Degree ranks, most of whom Bill Breeze has appointed. In so many ways, Breeze gutted Grady's OTO after he took over and he rapidly appointed Fifths to make up the newly formed Electoral College. Breeze handed out Rose Croix charters regardless whether the recipients had demonstrated that they understood the secrets of the degree. All in all, Tell Me Why I'm Still in the OTO is J. Edward remembering a time in the Order's history in which the new leadership was working hard to project a squeaky-clean, Masonic image and to establish worldwide domination of Thelema (both OTO and A.'.A.'.). The bulk of the Order's efforts were spent on the façade, little on the quality of the interactions, rituals, and relationships of its members. It was a time when, if you didn't conform, you were expelled or pushed out of the Order. Finally, J. Edward also learned that Bill Breeze and others did not know the truth behind the Caliphate and why Aleister Crowley created it, nor did they know that Grady Louis McMurtry had signed the original OTO Charter as a Magus 9=2 and so they discarded the title of Caliph from the OTO. At this point J. Edward began examining Scriven's leadership under microscope, and the image wasn't good.

Book excerpt: "The Exorcist", a 1973 movie about a twelve-year-old girl possessed by the Devil, frightened people more than any horror film ever did. Many moviegoers sought therapy to rid themselves of fears they could not explain. Psychiatrists coined the term "cinematic neurosis" for patients who left the movie feeling a terrifying presence of demons. At the Washington premiere, a young woman stood outside the theater, trembling. "I come out here in the sunlight," she said, "and I see people's eyes, and they frighten me." Among the few moviegoers unmoved by the horror were two priests, Father William S. Bowdern and Father Walter Halloran, members of the Jesuit community at St. Louis University. "Billy came out shaking his head about the little girl bouncing on the bed and urinating on the crucifix," Halloran remembers. "He was kind of angry. 'There is a good message that can be given by this thing,' he said. The message was the fact that evil spirits operate in our world." Bowdern and Halloran knew that the movie was fictional veneer masking a terrible reality. Night after night in March and April 1949, Bowdern had been an exorcist, with Halloran assisting. Bowdern fervently believed that he had driven a demon from a tormented soul. The victim had been a thirteen-year-old boy strangely lured to St. Louis from a Maryland suburb of Washington. Bowdern's exorcism had been the inspiration for the movie. The true story of this possession, told in Possessed, is based on a diary kept by a Jesuit priest assisting Father Bowdern. The diary, the most complete account of an exorcism since the Middle Ages, is published for the first time in this revised edition of Possessed.

As an Outer Adept they shine the light of their Sun toward the Earth, while an Inner Adept turns around and faces the infinite stars of Nuit and of BABALON. The avatar, according to Crowley, is the Balance between these roles. The avatar acts as a channel bringing Gnosis from Above to the Below. The receiver on Earth can be either female or male, claiming the title of a Scarlet Woman or the Beast. Erica M Cornelius's masterfully kaleidoscopic new book, The Scarlet Woman and the Ancient Mercurial Serpent and Other Essays, carefully discloses the feminine formula in New-Aeonic Magick. What you do with this formula is your own business. However, it is no secret, both men and women will be forever changed after reading this book. Chapters Titles: I. To Achieve the Serpent; II. Transformation of the Snake into the Wingéd Dragon; III. The Scarlet Woman as Melusine; IV The Scarlet Woman as Daemonic; V. The Scarlet Woman as Kundry; VI. Book excerpt: The occult was a crucial influence on the Renaissance, and it obsessed the popular thinkers of the day. But with the Age of Reason, occultism was sidelined; only charlatans found any use for it. Occult ideas did not disappear, however, but rather went underground. It developed into a fruitful source of inspiration for many important artists. Works of brilliance, sometimes even of genius, were produced under its influence. In A Dark Muse, Lachman discusses the Enlightenment obsession with occult politics, the Romantic explosion, the futuristic occultism of the fin de sièe, and the deep occult roots of the modernist movement. Some of the writers and thinkers featured in this hidden history of western thought and sensibility are Emanuel Swedenborg, Charles Baudelaire, J. K. Huysmans, August Strindberg, William Blake, Goethe, Madame Blavatsky, H. G. Wells, Edgar Allan Poe, and Malcolm Lowry.
