Book Synopsis Aldous Huxley and Utopia by : Jerome Meckier
Download or read book Aldous Huxley and Utopia written by Jerome Meckier and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the cycle that runs from Erewhon to Island, British literary utopias compete with one another to form the most persuasive picture of what the future might, or should, be like. At issue for Butler, Wells, Zamiatin, Orwell and others is whether utopia, be it positive or negative, is essentially prediction or hypothesis. Huxley contributed to this debate at roughly fifteen-year intervals, his three utopias becoming its key texts. In addition, Aldous Huxley and Utopia examines ironic cure scenes, the obsession with golf in the brave new world, attitudes towards death in Brave New World and Island, problems with names and history in the former, the role of islands in both, the detrimental impact of Madame Blavatsky and young Krishnamurti on the story of Pala, and the significance of a zoological conclusion of Island.
Book Synopsis Aldous Huxley and Self-Realization by : Dana Sawyer
Download or read book Aldous Huxley and Self-Realization written by Dana Sawyer and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2019-07 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout his writing career, and especially in the last thirty years of his life, Aldous Huxley exhibited a deep interest in human potentialities, which he often described as our greatest unused natural resource. The present volume is the first book to focus on this Huxleyan core concern. It is based on presentations given at the Sixth International Aldous Huxley Symposium held in 2017 at the University of Almería (Spain). This volume collects essays by eleven scholars from eight countries that discuss Huxley's concept of human potentialities from an interdisciplinary perspective. This is another innovative feature of this book, since today Huxley is mainly remembered as a novelist, although only eleven of his fifty published works belong to that genre. The topics of this volume span Huxley's mature philosophy, including his theories relating to the expansion of consciousness, the development of nonverbal humanities, the need to improve bio-ethics, the role of nature, the role of beliefs and prejudice, and other subjects. These essays review Huxley's various positions, shedding light on their possible significance for today. Huxley marshalled his remarkable intellect to the project of improving the human condition, and here we find an up-to-date report card of his theories and their efficacy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. (Christian E. Lewalter, DIE ZEIT)

In a society built on conformity, stability, and pervasive “happiness,” individuals are not born, but manufactured into one of five distinct castes—from dull-witted laborers to leaders and thinkers. Even as embryos, people are conditioned and programmed not only to accept, but to enjoy their predestined lives—or is it their slavery? But what happens when a savage—a man born from an actual mother—is introduced into this perfectly ordered society? Brave New World is a masterpiece of literary satire, as appropriate today, in our world of endless, shallow distractions and ubiquitous mass media, as it was when it was first published in 1932. The summary and analysis in this ebook are intended to complement your reading experience and bring you closer to a great work of fiction.

Book Synopsis Die Rolle der Familie und der Sexualität in Aldous Huxley s Brave New World by :
Download or read book Die Rolle der Familie und der Sexualität in Aldous Huxley s Brave New World written by and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2002-02-23 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: Aldous Huxley, author of eleven novels, remains one of the towering figures of the twentieth century, his work resistant to passing fads in literature. This critical biography explores Huxley’s lifelong quest for self-actualization by intertwining the events of his life and details of the creative period that produced each book. Considering Huxley’s letters, essays and interviews in its examination of the thematic content of each novel, the text finds a man striving for the intellectual growth that would yield a sound philosophical and spiritual view of life, one he infused into his work.

Book Synopsis Reconstructing Modernism by : Ashley Maher
Download or read book Reconstructing Modernism written by Ashley Maher and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-12 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reconstructing Modernism establishes for the first time the centrality of modernist buildings and architectural periodicals to British mid-century literature. Drawing upon a wealth of previously unexplored architectural criticism by British authors, this book reveals how arguments about architecture led to innovations in literature, as well as to redesigns in the concept of modernism itself. While the city has long been a focus of literary modernist studies, architectural modernism has never had its due. Scholars usually characterize architectural modernism as a parallel modernism or even an incompatible modernism to literature. Giving special attention to dystopian classics Brave New World and Nineteen Eighty-Four, this study argues that sustained attention to modern architecture shaped mid-century authors' political and aesthetic commitments. After many writers deemed modernist architects to be agents for communism and other collectivist movements, they squared themselves—and literary modernist detachment and aesthetic autonomy—against the seemingly tyrannical utopianism of modern architecture; literary aesthetic qualities were reclaimed as political qualities. In this way, Reconstructing Modernism redraws the boundaries of literary modernist studies: rather than simply adding to its canon, it argues that the responsibility for defining literary modernism for the mid-century public was shared by an incredible variety of authors—Edwardians, modernists, satirists, and even anti-modernists.
Book Synopsis Psychedelic Mysticism by : Morgan Shipley
Download or read book Psychedelic Mysticism written by Morgan Shipley and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2015-11-12 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although commonly celebrated as a distinct manifestation of Americana, hippies and psychedelics are routinely de-emphasized in favor of direct political activism, a phenomenon that constrains the full telling of the hippie counterculture as it relates to a radical religiosity defined by mutuality and altruism. Psychedelic Mysticism reevaluates the religious significance of the 1960s psychedelic counterculture, tracing how psychedelics became entheogenic, leading sixties figures to transition personal moments of enlightenment into everyday projects of social justice.
