Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a general introduction to and description of North America's major drug of abuse: alcohol. Multidisciplinary in approach, the Manual addresses itself to the variety of methods. The reader is given observable, behavioural, and "here-and-now" techniques for treatment as well as answers to such fundamental questions as: What effects does alcohol have on the individual? How do we treat the alcoholic? How successful are we in our efforts? The Manual was written as a guide for frontline workers - those who need practical answers to questions that are beyond the scope of the alcohol clinic pamphlet but are too general for the highly technical or specialized reference work. It should appeal to counselors, therapists, educators, physicians, nurses, law enforcement officers, administrators, and social workers. It will also be of interest to lay readers interested in the field of alcoholism and its treatment.

The authors stress the necessity of choosing different treatment protocols based on scientific research and a client's needs. This text also offers an up-to-date review of the treatment outcome literature, which illustrates that there are a number of treatments that are consistently supported by research. The subsequent chapters provide mini-treatment manuals for approaches with the most scientific support, with sections on matching clients to particular treatment and descriptions on how to utilize each particular treatment plan. The authors have consolidated the information necessary to develop individualized, multidimensional treatment that can meet the needs of a diverse client population."--Back cover.

His approach offers an effective method for mitigating the shame that binds people to their addictions. In doing so, it may help pave the way to protracted recovery."--Journal of Groups in Addiction and Recovery "The curriculum...provides a vision for chemical dependency treatment I have attempted to address for many years. This looks like an approach that finally meets this need." --Eli Coleman, PhD Director of the Program in Human Sexuality University of Minnesota "In this new evidence-based curriculum...Doug Braun-Harvey challenges our attitudes and beliefs, as well as our traditional ways of providing treatment....This material on sexual health can help to provide a missing piece for many recovering addicts." --Stephanie S. Covington, PhD, LCSW Author, Women and Addiction: A Gender-Responsive Approach For men and women in addiction recovery, sexual behavior linked with drug or alcohol use is too often the primary reason for relapse. When sexuality is not directly and positively addressed in drug and alcohol treatment, it can result in treatment failure or relapse. This group facilitator's guide introduces a pioneering, evidence-based curriculum, designed to integrate concepts of sexual health, current sex research, and recent developments in relapse prevention research. With this guide, group facilitators can offer clients a positive and safe forum within which to understand and change their sex/drug- linked behaviors. Key Features: Requires no specialized training, and can be integrated into a wide variety of treatment programs with all types of clientele Contains lesson plans on dating and relationships, spirituality and sexuality, non-consensual sex, out-of-control sexual behavior, and more Complete with suggested group activities, guided discussions, questions, role- plays, and more Has been proven to improve client retention and decrease sexual behavioral problems

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Project MATCH, a 5-year study, was initiated by the Treatment Research Branch of NIAAA in 1989. The objective of the project is to determine if varying subgroups of alcohol abusing or dependent patients respond differentially to three treatments: (1) Twelve-step facilitation therapy, (2) Cognitive-behavioral coping skills therapy, and (3) Motivational enhancement therapy. Each treatment is delivered during a 12-week period by trained therapists following a standardized protocol. The twelve-step facilitation approach is grounded in the concept of alcoholism as a spiritual and medical disease. The content of this intervention is consistent with the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), with primary emphasis given to Steps 1 though 5. The facilitation program described in this manual is intended for use in brief individual outpatient treatment for persons who satisfy the criteria for a diagnosis of alcohol dependence and abuse. It is intended to be flexible enough to allow for individual treatment planning and for use as a primary treatment for persons who have never been exposed to the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), as well as for individuals who have had such exposure, for example, through prior treatment.

Book excerpt: The Clinical Manual for Treatment of Alcoholism and Addictions provides a concise overview of addiction treatment issues relevant to physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers, alcohol and drug counselors, and rehabilitation therapists who are involved in the care of patients with substance use disorders. Drawing from their extensive experience in treating addictions in both inpatient and outpatient settings, the authors have assembled a wealth of clinical information condensed into one easy-to-read guide. The manual Presents an overview of the genetics, biological markers, and pathophysiology of addiction. Covers specific addictive substances in detail -- including epidemiology, presentation, and diagnosis. Highlights underlying issues related to each substance and includes sections on polysubstance abuse and psychiatric comorbidity. Touches on various evaluation and assessment tools Reviews psychosocial and pharmacological treatment modalities. Throughout the book, complex material is made accessible through the generous use of tables and charts, and key points summarize the important take-away points for each chapter In addition, the manual offers extensive coverage of many different aspects of addiction psychiatry: Specific patient populations, such as children and adolescents, seniors, mentally and physically handicapped persons, the chronically ill, and the homeless Various treatment settings, such as general hospitals, outpatient medical settings, and emergency departments Behavioral addictions, such as pathological gambling, kleptomania, and compulsive buying Violence, crime, and suicidal behavior With their vast impact on our culture and society, substance use disorders may well become one of the main challenges for psychiatry in the twenty-first century. Effective approaches to substance use disorders require treatment combinations tailored specifically to each individual. The Clinical Manual for Treatment of Alcoholism and Addictions is an invaluable tool for informing clinicians about the wide array of treatment options available to help their patients who struggle with substance abuse problems.
