This book was released on 1992 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a result of the consumption of wildland by the demands of a growing world human population, parks and other protected areas are becoming increasingly important. The role of science in the effective management of such areas is a critical consideration if protected areas are to serve their several functions as recreational areas, heritage and educational resources, wildlife refuges, natural repositories of endangered species, reference sites for scientific research, and sites set aside simply for their intrinsic natural value as wilderness. In this volume strategies to combat accelerating decline in global biodiversity are put forward. Legal protection requires explicit strategies for the management of natural systems, such as the scientific approach to land use planning and reserve selection and design. Science should play an essential role in assisting in the definition of strategic objectives and providing means for the realization of those objectives. The natural systems requiring protection are dynamic and management objectives are of necessity very long term.Science and the Management of Protected Areas provides a wealth of information on floral and faunal management, global change research, water quality, human impacts and tourism. It is the first book ever to bring together the perspectives of both environmental scientists and the administrative managers of protected areas and, as such, it will be useful to both the scientific community and to Land Managers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among birds, swans are relatively long-lived species and are also among the most strongly monogamous, having prolonged pair and family bonds that strongly influence their reproductive and general social behavior, which, in combination with their beauty and elegance, contribute to the overall high degree of worldwide human interest in them. This volume of more than 59,000 words describes the distributions, ecology, social behavior, and breeding biologies of the four species of swans that breed or have historically bred in North America, including the native trumpeter and tundra swans, the introduced mute swan, and the marginally occurring whooper swan. Also included are 5 distribution maps, 15 drawings, 27 photographs by the author, and a reference section of nearly 1,000 literature citations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines ten economically advanced countries in Europe and Asia that have experienced different levels of fertility decline. It offers readers a cross-country perspective on the causes and consequences of low birth rates and the different policy responses to this worrying trend. The countries examined are not only diverse geographically, historically, and culturally, but also have different policies and institutions in place. They include six very-low-fertility countries (Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, Spain, and Taiwan) and four that have close to replacement-level fertility (United Kingdom, Norway, Canada, and France). Although fertility has gone down in all these countries over the past 50 years, the chapters examine the institutional, policy, and cultural factors that have led some countries to have much lower fertility rates than others. In addition, the final chapter provides a cross-country comparison of individual perceptions about obs tacles to fertility, based on survey data, and government support for families. This broad overview, along with a general introduction, helps put the specific country papers in context. As birth rates continue to decline, there is increasing concern about the fate of social welfare systems, including healthcare and programs for the elderly. This book will help readers to better understand the root causes of such problems with its insightful discussion on how a country’s institutions, policies, and culture shape fertility trends and levels.

This much-anticipated second edition brings the discussion up to date, applying the same thorough analysis to illuminate the rapid changes now shaping our regional landscapes. This new edition draws upon contemporary analyses, projects, and literature to address issues of spatial complexity now facing regional planners in Canada. Special attention is paid to he regional planning dimensions of climate change adaptation and environmental sustainability across Canada, the development inequities faced in peripheral resource regions, the role that Aboriginal peoples must play in the planning of their regions, and the distinctive planning needs of metropolitan regions across the country. This book challenges planners, educators, and policy makers to engage with the latest thinking and strive for best practices in twenty-first century regional planning.
