The Alaska Fisheries Science Center is the research branch for marine life and coastal oceans off parts of the U.S. west coast and Alaska. This includes the Eastern Bering Sea where some the worlds most important commercial fishing takes place. Their mission is to develop and maintain scientific exploration to help understand and manage that region's environment. Over the years there have been many reports published which discuss their findings; this is one of them.

Book excerpt: The Age and Growth Program at the Alaska Fisheries Science Center is tasked with providing age data in order to improve the basic understanding of the ecology and fisheries dynamics of Alaskan fish species. The primary focus of the Age and Growth Program is to estimate ages from otoliths and other calcified structures for age-structured modeling of commercially exploited stocks; however, the program has recently expanded its interests to include numerous studies on topics ranging from age estimate validation to the growth and life-history of non-target species. Because so many applications rely upon age data and particularly upon assurances as to their accuracy and precision, the Age and Growth Program has developed this practical guide to document the age determination of key groundfish species from Alaskan waters. The main objective of this manual is to describe techniques specific to the age determination of commercially and ecologically important species studied by the Age and Growth Program. The manual also provides general background information on otolith morphology, dissection, and preparation, as well as descriptions of methods used to measure precision and accuracy of age estimates. This manual is intended not only as a reference for age readers at the AFSC and other laboratories, but also to give insight into the quality of age estimates to scientists who routinely use such data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Alaska pollock is everywhere. If you're eating fish but you don't know what kind it is, it's almost certainly pollock. Prized for its generic fish taste, pollock masquerades as crab meat in california rolls and seafood salads, and it feeds millions as fish sticks in school cafeterias and Filet-O-Fish sandwiches at McDonald's. That ubiquity has made pollock the most lucrative fish harvest in America--the fishery in the United States alone has an annual value of over one billion dollars. But even as the money rolls in, pollock is in trouble: in the last few years, the pollock population has declined by more than half, and some scientists are predicting the fishery's eventual collapse. Crucial to understanding the pollock fishery, he shows, is recognizing what aspects of its natural history make pollock so very desirable to fish, while at the same time making it resilient, yet highly vulnerable to overfishing. Bailey delves into the science, politics, and economics surrounding Alaska pollock in the Bering Sea, detailing the development of the fishery, the various political machinations that have led to its current management, and, perhaps most important, its impending demise. He approaches his subject from multiple angles, bringing in the perspectives of fishermen, politicians, environmentalists, and biologists, and drawing on revealing interviews with players who range from Greenpeace activists to fishing industry lawyers."--Amazon.

Book excerpt: "Economic and social surveys are useful and powerful tools used to help better understand the characteristics, attitudes, opinions, and behavior of specific populations. However, it is not always clear to researchers how these surveys should be developed and implemented so that the most accurate information is obtained. This guide is intended to address this concern and to guide Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC) researchers through the survey research and development process with the basic protocols and techniques developed in the survey research literature for maximizing item and unit response, minimizing biases, and generally producing surveys that will yield high quality information. The information presented is generally applicable to all voluntary economic and social surveys conducted by AFSC researchers and its contractors and provides a number of guidelines intended to ensure that economic and social surveys produced by the AFSC are developed and implemented according to the standards of the survey literature and required administrative and internal protocols"--Abstract.

Book excerpt: "The Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (MSFCMA) mandates NOAA to identify habitats essential for managed species and conserve habitats from adverse effects on those habitats. These habitats are termed "Essential Fish Habitat" or EFH, and are defined as "those waters and substrate necessary to fish for spawning, breeding, feeding, or growth to maturity". Further, the MSFCMA requires federal agencies to consult with the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) when their actions may adversely affect EFH. These consultations occur for both fishing and non-fishing activities.1 The recently revised National Standard 1 guidelines add several provisions to facilitate the incorporation of ecosystem-based fisheries management into federal fisheries management. National Standard 2 of the MSFCMA requires NMFS to conserve and manage fishery resources based upon the best available scientific information. To meet these mandates, NOAA's research must identify habitats that contribute most to the survival, growth, and productivity of managed fish species and determine science-based measures to best manage and conserve these habitats from adverse effects of human activities"--Introduction.
