Book Synopsis The Happiest Baby on the Block by : Harvey Karp, M.D.
Download or read book The Happiest Baby on the Block written by Harvey Karp, M.D. and published by Bantam. This book was released on 2008-11-19 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perfect for expecting parents who want to provide a soothing home for the newest member of their family, The Happiest Baby on the Block, the national bestseller by respected pediatrician and child development expert Dr. Harvey Karp, is a revolutionary method for calming a crying infant and promoting healthy sleep from day one. In perhaps the most important parenting book of the decade, Dr. Harvey Karp reveals an extraordinary treasure sought by parents for centuries --an automatic “off-switch” for their baby’s crying. No wonder pediatricians across the country are praising him and thousands of Los Angeles parents, from working moms to superstars like Madonna and Pierce Brosnan, have turned to him to learn the secrets for making babies happy. Never again will parents have to stand by helpless and frazzled while their poor baby cries and cries. Dr. Karp has found there IS a remedy for colic. “I share with parents techniques known only to the most gifted baby soothers throughout history …and I explain exactly how they work.” In a innovative and thought-provoking reevaluation of early infancy, Dr. Karp blends modern science and ancient wisdom to prove that newborns are not fully ready for the world when they are born. Through his research and experience, he has developed four basic principles that are crucial for understanding babies as well as improving their sleep and soothing their senses: ·The Missing Fourth Trimester: as odd as it may sound, one of the main reasons babies cry is because they are born three months too soon. ·The Calming Reflex: the automatic reset switch to stop crying of any baby in the first few months of life. ·The 5 “S’s”: the simple steps (swaddling, side/stomach position, shushing, swinging and sucking) that trigger the calming reflex. For centuries, parents have tried these methods only to fail because, as with a knee reflex, the calming reflex only works when it is triggered in precisely the right way. Unlike other books that merely list these techniques Dr. Karp teaches parents exactly how to do them, to guide cranky infants to calm and easy babies to serenity in minutes…and help them sleep longer too. ·The Cuddle Cure: the perfect mix the 5 “S’s” that can soothe even the most colicky of infants. In the book, Dr. Karp also explains: What is colic? Why do most babies get much more upset in the evening? How can a parent calm a baby--in mere minutes? Can babies be spoiled? When should a parent of a crying baby call the doctor? How can a parent get their baby to sleep a few hours longer? Even the most loving moms and dads sometimes feel pushed to the breaking point by their infant’s persistent cries. Coming to the rescue, however, Dr. Karp places in the hands of parents, grandparents, and all childcare givers the tools they need to be able to calm their babies almost as easily as…turning off a light. From the Hardcover edition.

Book excerpt: In this magical debut, a couple's lives are changed forever by the arrival of a little girl, wild and secretive, on their snowy doorstep. Alaska, 1920: a brutal place to homestead, and especially tough for recent arrivals Jack and Mabel. Childless, they are drifting apart -- he breaking under the weight of the work of the farm; she crumbling from loneliness and despair. In a moment of levity during the season's first snowfall, they build a child out of snow. The next morning the snow child is gone -- but they glimpse a young, blonde-haired girl running through the trees. This little girl, who calls herself Faina, seems to be a child of the woods. She hunts with a red fox at her side, skims lightly across the snow, and somehow survives alone in the Alaskan wilderness. As Jack and Mabel struggle to understand this child who could have stepped from the pages of a fairy tale, they come to love her as their own daughter. But in this beautiful, violent place things are rarely as they appear, and what they eventually learn about Faina will transform all of them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bob and Margaret Wolff celebrated their wedding anniversary six months after their marriage--in case they didn't make it a full year. However, they shared a thirty-one year honeymoon before Bob's tragic accidental death. Alaskan Wolff Pack is Bob and Margaret's story, and the story of the remarkable children, friends, and pets they accumulated along the way. The delights of living in the Alaska bush amidst four legged neighbors, the closeness of sharing a one room cabin in a forty square mile yard, and the adventures of gold mining and travel; could not be dimmed by fires, floods, crashes, or death. They mostly lived from hand to mouth, often without a dime in their pockets, occasionally their material possessions were little more than the clothes on their backs, and the tooth ferry could only leave an IOU note under the children’s pillows--but their real riches were abundantly awesome.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Whatever the powerful pull was, its 5,000 mile beckon, brought the young Wills family to Alaska in March of 1959. First it was the homestead; hunting soon followed; commercial fishing, an improbable occupation became a passion; and becoming a pilot and flying small bush-planes was justified by guiding big game hunters. All of these adventures gave Jerre an appreciation for Alaska's land, sea, and air. Alaska's allure became a 55-year love affair with the Greatland. Download or read book Pilgrim's Wilderness written by Tom Kizzia and published by Crown. This book was released on 2013-07-16 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Into the Wild meets Helter Skelter in this riveting true story of a modern-day homesteading family in the deepest reaches of the Alaskan wilderness—and of the chilling secrets of its maniacal, spellbinding patriarch. When Papa Pilgrim, his wife, and their fifteen children appeared in the Alaska frontier outpost of McCarthy, their new neighbors saw them as a shining example of the homespun Christian ideal. But behind the family's proud piety and beautiful old-timey music lay Pilgrim's dark past: his strange connection to the Kennedy assassination and a trail of chaos and anguish that followed him from Dallas and New Mexico. Pilgrim soon sparked a tense confrontation with the National Park Service fiercely dividing the community over where a citizen’s rights end and the government’s power begins. As the battle grew more intense, the turmoil in his brood made it increasingly difficult to tell whether his children were messianic followers or hostages in desperate need of rescue. In this powerful piece of Americana, written with uncommon grace and high drama, veteran Alaska journalist, Tom Kizzia uses his unparalleled access to capture an era-defining clash between environmentalists and pioneers ignited by a mesmerizing sociopath who held a town and a family captive.

Book Synopsis The Fence and the Bridge by : Heather N. Nicol
Download or read book The Fence and the Bridge written by Heather N. Nicol and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2015-06-27 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fence and the Bridge is about the development of the Canada-US border-security relationship as an outgrowth of the much lengthier Canada-US relationship. It suggests that this relationship has been both highly reflexive and hegemonic over time, and that such realities are embodied in the metaphorical images and texts that describe the Canada-US border over its history. Nicol argues that prominent security motifs, such as themes of free trade, illegal immigration, cross-border crime, terrorism, and territorial sovereignty are not new, nor are they limited to the post-9/11 era. They have developed and evolved at different times and become part of a larger quilt, whose patches are stitched together to create a new fabric and design. Each of the security motifs that now characterize Canada-US border perceptions and relations has a precedent in border-management strategies and border relations in earlier periods. In some cases, these have deep historical roots that date back not just years or decades but centuries. They are part of an evolving North American geopolitical logic that inscribes how borders are perceived, how they function, and what they mean.
Book Synopsis Raising Young Children in an Alaskan Inupiaq Village by : Julie E. Sprott

This book was released on 2002-12-30 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive, case study portrait of the childrearing context of a predominantly Eskimo village in the remote Northwest Arctic, designed to look for evidence of reinvention, transformation, or conscious choice as process features of change in the mix of traditional childrearing beliefs and practices with infusions from the dominant culture. The rearing environment and child well-being were studied during 18 months of anthropological fieldwork in an Alaskan Inupiaq village in the Northwest Arctic. Volunteers for the sample consisted of 44 adults from 16 extended families who were raising a child between the ages of three and six years. Results from guided interviews, card sorts, standardized family and home assessments, and review of the children's medical records revealed a complex portrait of culture continuity and change and included the following trends: • many traditions had been retained, even though villagers perceived few differences in their rearing style compared to that of mainstream culture • despite the presence of other households with extended family members in the village and touting of the value of kinship, 25% of core families reared their children in relative isolation • growth measurements, immunization status, and general health of the children were good, but children evidenced diets high in sugar and many suffered severe dental problems • present-day caregivers were engaged in dialogue about problem parenting behaviors that had developed a generation earlier during a time of massive acculturation stress and population growth—namely, the overuse of scolding of children without attached explanations and overt favoring of specific children over others in the family. The study presents present-day rearing strategies and ideas as summarized from interviews and data from more formal instruments, and frames changes in the system within the broader historical/social context.
