Book excerpt: During our lives, God often uses people who reach out in love and help to us during a difficult situation, as “Jesus with skin on.” This assures us that our heavenly Father still is with us, caring for us and holding us close. In other situations, the Lord can use pets and other animals to accomplish the same goals. In this memoir, a very special gift from God came into my life as a starving, thirsty, flea-and-ear-mite-infested stray kitten. He grew into a handsome, affectionate big cat who became my “Jesus wrapped in fur.” This kitty whom my husband had named Pinball was always there when I needed an extra touch of God’s love and presence during the darkest moments of the most difficult and challenging decade of my life. Pinball seemed to understand and share my feelings; he seemed to feel my pain. He grieved along with me and then often gave me reasons to chuckle and welcome the sunshine and joy once again. I am absolutely convinced that God himself placed Pinball into my life at exactly this moment when I most needed to know for certain that God still loves me, is always holding me close, and can bring me triumphantly through life’s deepest valleys as I hang on to His promises. A warm, soft, purring cat was a most comforting and healing medicine to soothe my broken heart and assure me that God is, indeed, good all the time, and I have grown stronger through all these experiences.

GUIDES AND HANDBOOKS-includes reference and how-to books for doing research on specific record groups or areas of the U.S. or the world. GENEALOGICAL SOURCES BY STATE-consists of entries for genealogical data, organized alphabetically by state and then by city or county. Stokes of Alamance Co. surveyed a number of abandoned or lost cemeteries - primarily in Alamance County, but moved around crossing into Orange, Chatham, and Randolph Counties. His manuscript was typed in 1979, but never published. His actual surveys occurred in 1958-9. This was fortunate, since a number of these locations are gone - and the old tombstones are not getting better (visually) with age. Therefore, I as editor, retyped his manuscript - and added historical remarks (where helpful), pictures I took in modern times, and a detailed index. Durward had some B&W pictures - which are included in this book as well.Lastly, there are two graveyards that I found, that Durward was not aware of - included with pictures and maps in an Appendix.

From the plight of antislavery Quakers to the strength of women, the county was awash in political turmoil. Intriguing abolitionists, fire-breathing secessionists, peacemakers, valiant soldiers and carpetbaggers are some of the figures who contributed to the chaotic time. General Joseph E. Johnston's parole of the Army of Tennessee at Greensboro, as well as the birth of a free black community following the Confederate defeat, brought amazing changes. Local author and historian Carol Moore traces the romantic days in the lead-up to war, the horrors of war itself and the decades of aftermath that followed. Book jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thousand unique gravestones cluster around old Presbyterian churches in the piedmont of the two Carolinas and in central Pennsylvania. Most are the vulnerable legacy of three generations of the Bigham family, Scotch Irish stonecutters whose workshop near Charlotte created the earliest surviving art of British settlers in the region. In The True Image, Daniel Patterson documents the craftsmanship of this group and the current appearance of the stones. In two hundred of his photographs, he records these stones for future generations and compares their iconography and inscriptions with those of other early monuments in the United States, Northern Ireland, and Scotland. Combining his reading of the stones with historical records, previous scholarship, and rich oral lore, Patterson throws new light on the complex culture and experience of the Scotch Irish in America. In so doing, he explores the bright and the dark sides of how they coped with challenges such as backwoods conditions, religious upheavals, war, political conflicts, slavery, and land speculation. He shows that headstones, resting quietly in old graveyards, can reveal fresh insights into the character and history of an influential immigrant group.
