Book excerpt: Ocean breezes. Tropical islands. All accessible by bicycle or on foot along the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail, a 109-mile bike route from Key West to Key Largo. This book is a mile-by-mile guide for you to explore the Florida Keys under your own power while following the Overseas Heritage Trail across dozens of historic railroad bridges and past lengthy ocean panoramas that only the Florida Keys can offer.Going by bike or by foot means taking the Florida Keys at a leisurely pace, savoring the journey, and discovering natural places and historic sites that visitors in cars simply whiz right past without realizing what they're missing. It also means that the trail slips back into history and nature along Old US 1 on some of the islands, taking you away from the highway to offer up views of mangrove marshes, salt flats, and wide open turquoise waters. On a bicycle, you can more easily take advantage of the side trips we mention throughout the guide, to better enjoy the "off the beaten path" corners of the Florida Keys.Throughout the guide, we provide details as to when you do and don't have a bike path to follow, information on campgrounds and inexpensive lodgings along the route, and recommendations for more luxurious stays at resorts and hotels. We share our favorites among the many eateries in the Keys as well. You'll learn about parks and natural areas along the route, and a little history about the Overseas Railroad, which shut down in 1935. The trail mostly follows its route. This is a trail guide, and a travel guide. In addition to the mile-by-mile descriptions of every waypoint of interest along the Overseas Heritage Trail, you'll find out how to connect to the mainland by bicycle or on foot, how to get you and your bicycle to Key West from the Miami airport, and where the bike shops are along the route. We list bike shops and outfitters who rent bicycles for the ride, as well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brentwood Borough, established in 1915, spans one of the highest ridges in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, just six miles southeast of Pittsburgh. In the 19th century, three small villages, four inns, and several blacksmith shops clustered along the rural ridge. A popular and primitive roadway, now known as Brownsville Road, connected these three hamlets with the wider world. This major artery carried coaches, wagons, livestock, and even escaping slaves to Pittsburgh. At least one of the four inns was a stop on the Underground Railroad. Many years later, the community established a 28-acre park, complete with shelter house and swimming pool, as well as the later additions of ball fields, tennis courts, and a football stadium. In keeping with its original focus on education, the community has maintained its own school district. Brownsville Road, as a main street, has supported several viable shopping districts. Brentwood is renowned for its annual Fourth of July parade, attracting tens of thousands of spectators each year. Today, Brentwood encompasses 1.45 square miles. The strength of this small community lies with its residents, who value service and commitment. For 100 years, Brentwood has maintained its own distinct character and charm, combining the elements of a modern community with the friendliness of a small town.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Land Remembered has become Florida's favorite novel. Now this Student Edition in two volumes makes this rich, rugged story of the American pioneer spirit more accessible to young readers. Patrick Smith tells of three generations of the MacIveys, a Florida family battling the hardships of the frontier. The story opens in 1858, when Tobias and Emma MacIvey arrive in the Florida wilderness with their son, Zech, to start a new life, and ends in 1968 with Solomon MacIvey, who realizes that his wealth has not been worth the cost to the land. Between is a sweeping story rich in Florida history with a cast of memorable characters who battle wild animals, rustlers, Confederate deserters, mosquitoes, starvation, hurricanes, and freezes to carve a kingdom out of the Florida swamp. In this volume, meet young Zech MacIvey, who learns to ride like the wind through the Florida scrub on Ishmael, his marshtackie horse, his dogs, Nip and Tuck, at this side. His parents, Tobias and Emma, scratch a living from the land, gathering wild cows from the swamp and herding them across the state to market. Zech learns the ways of the land from the Seminoles, with whom his life becomes entwined as he grows into manhood. Next in series > > See all of the books in this series

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: M. J. Eberhart, aka the Nimblewill Nomad, was a 60-year-old retired doctor in January 1998 when he set off on a foot journey that carried him 4,400 miles (twice the length of the Appalachian Trail) from the Florida Keys to the far north of Quebec. Written in a vivid journal style, the author unabashedly recounts the good (friendships with other hikers he met), the bad (sore legs, cutting winds and rain), and the godawful (those dispiriting doubts) aspects of his days of walking along what has since become known as the Eastern Continental Trail (ECT). An amazing tale of self-discovery and insight into the magic that reverberates from intense physical exertion and a high goal, Eberhart's is the only written account of a thru-hike along the ECT. Covering 16 states and 2 Canadian provinces, Ten Million Steps deftly mixes practical considerations of an almost unimaginable undertaking with the author's trademark humor and philosophical musings.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Atewa Range Forest Reserve represents one of the largest remaining forest blocks in Ghana and one of the most rewarding areas for scientific study as the nation’s last intact block of Upland Evergreen Forest. The survey results presented in this volume confirm that Atewa is a site of extreme significance for global biodiversity conservation, one which should be protected in its entirety as it harbors a number of rare and threatened species within a unique habitat type. The results of this assessment strongly suggest that Atewa represents a very rare example of a relatively intact West African forest, notably showing that Atewa is an important site for amphibians. Researchers observed a high proportion of threatened amphibian species, some of which maintain the majority of their existing populations in Atewa.
