Book excerpt: A fast growing share of investors have recently widened their scope of analysis to criteria regarded as extra-financial. They are driven by different motivations. Adoption of sustainable investment strategies can be driven, on the one hand by the sole motivation to hedge portfolios against knowable risks by expanding the conceptual framework to incorporate the latest best practice in risk management. Other investors focus rather on a long-term view and make an active bet on societal change. Recent empirical research has shown that considering sustainability factors within investment practices does not come at a cost (i.e. through a reduced opportunity set) but allows for competitive returns. Furthermore, the growing market and resulting competition in the wake of sustainable investing going mainstream has the welcome effect to compress fees for such products. Hence, staying informed about recent trends in sustainable investing is imperative no matter what the main motivation is.

Book excerpt: Dirty A poem by Blaire Leon If sex is dirty, why would I do it with someone I love? If sex is dirty, then didn't we all come from the dirt? What if I like the dirt? What if I want to get dirty? What if I want to roll in the mud until I'm so fucking filthy that I'll never be clean again? When twenty-five-year-old graduate assistant Caiden Brenner asked Blaire Leon how old she was, she said she was a senior. He chose to believe she meant in college. They connect over Lord Byron's Don Juan and, as their conversations become increasingly thicker with sexual innuendo, Caiden finds himself obsessing over a totally off-limits undergrad who's bold, beautiful, brilliant, and one of the most passionate poets he's ever met. But it turns out Blaire hasn't been totally honest. She's the seventeen-year-old valedictorian of her high school class, taking courses at Sierra State while awaiting her acceptance to Stanford. Will Caiden get too deeply into Blaire to back away before he finds out the truth? Or will their connection be enough to seduce him into risking his entire future on Jail Bait? "A thousand and one feels....Getting Dirty is a thrilling, tantalizing forbidden romance you do not want to miss! I not only devoured this book, it devoured me right back!"--Katy Evans, New York Times Bestselling author of REAL

Book excerpt: [UPDATE Our free vocabulary trainer at http://hermestrainer.pythonanywhere.com ] This intensive lexical builder is addressed to B1-B2 intermediate learners of German, who are already capable of reading easy German stories, and who would like to enrich (and/or refresh) their vocabulary up to the advanced level in order to approach more complex German texts. Each piece of vocabulary is embedded in at least three example sentences in order to appeal to active understanding and trigger both short-term and long-term memory. Whenever possible, different meanings of the terms or expressions concerned are also illustrated. The vocabulary lessons are interspersed with concise but essential reminders of German grammar. At the end of the book, readers are offered a bilingual, paragraph for paragraph version of one of E. T. A. Hoffmann’s famous stories, namely “Rath Krespel” (1818), translated in English by J. T. Bealby (1885). In each pair of bilingual paragraphs, important words to retain or recognize are emphasized in bold or underlined. Finally, the bilingual version is followed by the original, German only text of Hoffmann’s novel – which readers are advised to go through, even if by now they know the narrative – since it is essential to retrieve and fully consolidate all learned German terms into their original context. Book excerpt: * ""Embedded in a rich tapestry of mystery, supernatural encounters and love is a story line that also features a spiral staircase into what might be the pits of Hell itself; and as readers follow the protagonist into these murky depths, unexpected encounters and tension give The Rose Within its own, uniquely powerful take on life, love, and everything in between these passions and the final throes of death"" - Diane Donovan (Senior Reviewer, Midwest Book Review) * Set in England in the late 1920s, Jonathan Malcolm is drawn into the world of Winter Grange House encountering the love of his life, Selina Selwyn. But unbeknownst to him, Selina is caught in a web of enigmas that only gradually unfold. Some say Winter Grange is an estate cursed with ghosts and supernatural happenings. Will Jonathan ultimately attain his love or will it end in despair and tragedy? *

Book excerpt: When funding agencies and policy organizations consider the role of modeling and simulation in modern biology, the question is often posed, what has been accomplished ? This book will be organized around a symposium on the 20 year history of the CNS meetings, to be held as part of CNS 2010 in San Antonio Texas in July 2010. The book, like the symposium is intended to summarize progress made in Computational Neuroscience over the last 20 years while also considering current challenges in the field. As described in the table of contents, the chapter’s authors have been selected to provide wide coverage of the applications of computational techniques to a broad range of questions and model systems in neuroscience. The proposed book will include several features that establish the history of the field. For each article, its author will select an article originally appearing in a CNS conference proceedings from 15 – 20 years ago. These short (less than 6 page) articles will provide illustrations of the state of the field 20 years ago. The new articles will describe what has been learned about the subject in the following 20 years, and pose specific challenges for the next 20 years. The second historical mechanism will be the reproduction of the first 12 years of posters from the CNS meeting. These posters in and of themselves have become famous in the field (they hang in the halls of the NIH in Bethesda Maryland) and were constructed as allegories for the state and development of computational neuroscience. The posters were designed by the book’s editor, who will, for the first time, provide a written description of each poster.

Book excerpt: A very nervous Amisha stood on the dais, behind the microphone, waiting for the thunderous applause to subside, before beginning her speech. This was no ordinary moment - on the dais was present the senior staff of MIT and the global CEO of Microsoft. And amongst the audience were present the students and staff of MIT, besides her husband, daughter and old parents - all proud of her achievement and eagerly waiting for her to begin. The occasion? The annual event at MIT and to honor Amisha, the extra-ordinary Odissi dance teacher from California, and originally a resident of Bhubaneshwar, Orissa (India). This teacher had demonstrated to the world how technology could be leveraged to impart personalized lessons in traditional Indian dance form. From a small student base of 5, she had expanded her dance institute to over 150 students nationally in the US, with multiple virtual dance centers! Using social media and collaboration technologies, she had shown how technology can be a distance killer. In a world where dance or any form of art is regarded as highly personalized and high-touch instruction driven, this little-known teacher had made waves by using social media and video sharing technology to create virtual classes with a "secret" recipe. Read "Fifty Percent Near" to learn Amisha's remarkable journey- from a young lass at Bhubaneshwar to an ordinary stay-at-home mom to an extra-ordinary case study at MIT; and her secret sauce to leverage smart and modern social media and collaboration technologies to transform a high-touch art form to a low-touch yet equally personalized virtual reality. This book is for a cause. 50% of the proceeds received from sale of this book will be donated to ALC India, a social enterprise. India's marginalized producers battle formidable odds to eke out a fragile livelihood. Access Livelihoods Consulting India (ALC India), established 2005, is a social enterprise that partners almost 65,000 marginalized producers, including small and marginal farmers, weavers, tribals and small livestock holders. To such producers, ALC India offers professional services delivered by a team of passionate individuals who have graduated from some of India's best institutions and chosen the road less travelled. ALC India's services support economically marginalized communities to turn the odds in their favour and build livelihoods that are more rewarding and certain. To know more, visit www.alcindia.org.
