The 1920s, known as the Jazz Age, were an era of economic and social growth around the world. In America, during the era nicknamed after the wildly popular music genre, many new industries and existing ones thrived. In Akron, Ohio, one nascent fishing tackle manufacturer started his own enterprise out of his home; Fred Arbogast created metal baits, molded at his home garage, and sold them to fellow co-workers and fishermen in Akron, Ohio. In 1925, he left his employer to start one of Akron's legendary fishing tackle manufacturing companies, aptly named Fred Arbogast. Fred joined the ranks of others in the industry, such as the Enterprise Manufacturing Company (covered in volume one of this series). By late 1929, the Great Depression hit America as the stock market crashed. In years following, many industries went belly up, but Fred's business continued. Others in Akron, Ohio decided to join the ranks and pursue their passion of fishing in industry. This book covers the stories of not only Fred Arbogast, but also his company from 1925-1997. It also covers the Tempter Bait Company, Ray Summers, the Safe-T Lure and Midwest Tackle Companies, the Activated Lure Company, the Flexo-Novelty Company, Hom-Art's Bait Company, and the Ross Bait Manufacturing Company. This volume also covers an important, yet informative court case that took place between the Fred Arbogast Company, Incorporated and the Hom-Art's Bait Company. Because of their interconnections, Hom-Art's Bait and the Ross Bait Manufacturing companies are included in this second volume. All these businesses served Akron, Ohio and helped further the slogan "made in Akron." I hope you enjoy this volume titled Akron, Ohio's Fishing Tackle History: 1920-1940s!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Akron, Ohio was established in 1825 off the backs of workers who dug the Ohio Erie Canal system. It transformed itself in over one-hundred and twenty-four years to be a powerhouse in industry leading in the rubber manufacturing, toy, and fishing tackle fields. During this century and a quarter story, many nascent fishing tackle manufacturers stepped up to develop their own products including the Enterprise Manufacturing Company, also known as Pflueger's, the Fred Arbogast Company, and Fred Arbogast Company, Incorporated, and many other lesser known businesses. Shortly after World War II, a new era of manufacturers began their ascent and rise to fame in the fishing tackle industry. Nick Creme and the Creme family developed their own brand of artificial plastic fishing worms and revolutionized the artificial fishing tackle industry with their business the Creme Lure Company. Brooke Oertel who had been a field tester and friend of the legendary fisherman, Fred Arbogast, established his company named R-Jay Industries, better known as Brook's in Cuyahoga Falls. Other smaller concerns and inventors such as the Buckeye Shad bait, Bait Guard Incorporated, Johnny O'Neil, Bill Archer, Frank Praznik, the Action Tackle Company, and Bill Knafel all joined the ranks in the fishing tackle industry. Others grew from inspiration and passion for fishing in the fishing tackle field. This important third volume in the Akron, Ohio's Fishing Tackle History book series, covers companies that were established in the last seventy years from 1949-2019. It covers businesses not discussed in the other two volumes and uncovers rarely discussed information on these lesser-known fishing tackle manufacturers. I hope you enjoy this volume titled: Akron, Ohio's Fishing Tackle History: Volume III: 1949-2019!

Book excerpt: Fred Arbogast is infamously known for his invention the Jitterbug; however, many in the fishing world do not know is that he started making lures at the age of twelve. Born in Akron, Ohio on Brown Street, he grew up in the city, and developed a love of biology and fish early in life. As a teenager, he became a star athlete with his high school football team and entered the workforce during his high school years during summers. In addition to fishing, he had a passion for journalism, making bamboo casting and fly rods in his spare time, and working with taxidermy. As he became an employee of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company of Akron, Ohio, he honed skills in the rubber industry. During those years, he worked in different roles which taught him a new trade and gave him skill in molding, development, and rubber manufacturing. These skills combined with his uncanny desire to create his own fishing lures led to many unique ideas outside of work. As he developed lures at home, publicly, Fred Arbogast grew in notoriety in tournament casting. He became a very competitive tournament caster and his experience outpaced his competitors in the 1920s. Because of his inept abilities to cast with accuracy and distance, he became a "World Champion" bait caster. Out of this experience and notoriety in the tournament casting circles, Arbogast started his own fishing tackle company in 1925 at his home in Akron, Ohio. This book uncovers much of the history of his early company and the products he manufactured at his home for many years until in 1932, he moved his business to 313 West North Street. His company, aptly named Fred Arbogast, created some of the most iconic fishing tackle in history. This book provides a guidebook and related history for collectors of Fred Arbogast fishing lures of the metal brands, his Kicker and Tin Liz families of lures. This volume provides insight into Fred Arbogast's early fishing lures and provides knowledge for collectors and those interested in fishing tackle history.
