Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Textiles and clothing are interwoven with Islamic culture. In Islamicate Textiles, readers are taken on a journey from Central Asia to Tanzania to uncover the central roles that textiles play within Muslim-majority communities. This thematically arranged book sheds light on the traditions, rituals and religious practices of these regions, and the ways in which each one incorporates materials and clothing. Drawing on examples including Iranian lion carpets and Arabic keffiyeh, Faegheh Shirazi frames these textiles and totemic items as important cultural signifiers that, together, form a dynamic and fascinating material culture. Like a developing language, this culture expands, bends and develops to suit the needs of new generations and groups across the world. The political significance of Islamicate textiles is also explored: Faegheh Shirazi's writing reveals the fraught relationship between the East – with its sought-after materials and much-valued textiles – and the European countries that purchased and repurposed these goods, and lays bare the historical and contemporary connections between textiles, colonialism, immigration and economics. Dr Shirazi also discusses gender and how textiles and clothing are intimately linked with sexuality and gender identity.

Particular aspects of heritage are often more actively promoted, with others played down. The representation of heritage in tourism as static and timeless, derived since time immemorial from a distant past, is seductive. In Asia, a major part of the tourism market lies in the sale and consumption of highly orientalized images and versions of culture and history. In India’s marketing discourse, the state of Rajasthan symbolizes the nation in its heritage-laden, traditional and most authentic form. These images draw heavily on the British period in India - the Raj. In one sense, this vision of Rajasthan is ennobling, highlighting moments of cultural pride. In another sense, it demeans, by omitting and obscuring salient features of contemporary life. This fascinating book explores the cultural politics of tourism through interdisciplinary perspectives. Carol E. Henderson and Maxine Weisgrau demonstrate that tourism heritage privileges elite histories that recapitulate colonial relationships, compelling non-elites to collude in these narratives of subordination even as they advance their own alternative visions of history.

The rural areas supply perishable items to urban areas and from urban areas, migrants send remittances back to their homes in rural areas. In India, where 68.85 percent of the population resided in rural area in 2011, the balanced regional development is required to achieve uniform and equitable distribution of resources. Of late, most of the Government's planning related efforts and associated development are more in cities, being largest contributor to Gross Domestic Product (GDP), than rural areas. Higher investment in cities as compared to rural areas contradicts the basic premise of a balanced regional development. Though region received recognition through 73 and 74 Constitutional Amendment Act, yet regional planning is still amiss. As the population is increasing at a faster rate, one has to design the space in a sustainable manner. The development by means of infrastructure or governance shall have the futuristic approach. The book intends to create knowledge about the significance of regional planning. Using case study approach, thirteen chapters by contributing authors provides an in-depth understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects related to the concepts of regionalization, agglomeration economies, contract farming, industrialization, corridor development and heritage based development. In the book, highly acclaimed professionals' presents microscopic view of planning of varied type of regions and suggest ways to avoid the excess and misuse of resources which will dwindle the quintessence of future development. The book provides a one-stop answer to the quest of university students, government officials, researchers, officials from non-Government and private organisations to comprehend the concept of region, contextualize its importance as a viable unit of planning to resolve prevalent issues keeping in mind futuristic outlook of regional development. The editor establishes the importance of region as a viable unit of planning, emphasizes upon the need for contextualising the issues existing in the region and accentuates that Government's effort at national and state levels should be towards holistic planning of a region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A doctor's white coat is like an armour against the world. Cool and confident behind it, smiling to reassure nervous patients, while the doctor's own anxieties and uncertainties remain well hidden. In a Better Place takes us to the world behind that self-assured exterior through the lives of Sudha, practising in a busy hospital in the heart of Delhi, her husband, Girish, and their close circle of doctor friends and colleagues. It is a world of sudden crises and long hours in bleak hospital wards, courageous fights to save a life and heartbreak, personal dilemmas and aspirations for a better life, but also the great satisfactions of a job well done. Always there is the pulsating canvas of the city-first the hospital in Delhi, then in England. From minor observations to broader strokes-a doctor evaluating quickly what to do to save a patient, the rusty screech of a screen as it is pulled to give privacy to a patient being given emergency care, to a tea seller near the IIT gate and a dhaba which serves excellent food, the details help us connect to Sudha, Girish, Jai and Sanjay with a rare immediacy. Always, like a good doctor does her patient, Bornali Datta carries the reader along with her. Sudha and her husband do get to be where they think they want to be, but, as this engaging novel develops, it is not quite what they wanted, they realise.
