The Italian airship designer and pilot Umberto Nobile had flown to the North Pole and beyond in 1926. He resolved to return to the Arctic with a new airship in 1928. The expedition had geographical and scientific aims, but the political environment was also an important motivator. Benito Mussolini and his fascist party had come to power in 1922 and a successful expedition to the Arctic would be excellent propaganda.

The chains Quincy once wore around her neck began to move fluidly on their own, and the white-hot links wrapped themselves around that of her wrist and left hand as she cried out in excruciating pain. The molten metal melded with flesh as it began to sink beneath her skin. It felt as if her very hand was being torn apart and was melting to pieces. The sharp, unbearable pain was indescribable. Sparks began to fly from the burning compass as it flew closer toward the palm of her left hand. Quincy believed she was going to die. She could not breathe. She felt as if she were being burned alive from the inside out as her body became irradiated with the unbearable heat. The compass seeped into the scalding wound which had been gouged into her hand.

The huge silver craft, bearing a lion rampant across its bow, was the Scottish-built airship R34 manned by a 30-strong crew of World War I veterans (and a stowaway cat). A few days earlier the R34 had made the first-ever east-west flight across the Atlantic against powerful head winds and electrical storms. The flight of the R34 was one of the great feats of British aviation and it has been shamefully forgotten - but there is a wealth of information out there. Some of it is in the diary kept by General Edward Maitland, which was later published, other material comes from the flight reports of the airship's officers, crew diaries, press interviews, and technical information buried in the National Archives in Kew and in the records of the royal Aeronautical Society and the New York Times.
