Book Synopsis Mach 0.6 to 3.0 Flows Over Rectangular Cavities by : Louis G. Kaufman
Download or read book Mach 0.6 to 3.0 Flows Over Rectangular Cavities written by Louis G. Kaufman and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Internal weapons carriage in high performance aircraft is often adversely affected by the severe aeroacoustic environment produced with the weapons bay doors open. To obtain a better understanding of this fluid dynamic problem, basic static and oscillatory pressure data were obtained for Mach 0.6 to 3.0 flows over shallow rectangular cavities in a generic flat plate model. Cavity length to depth ratios were varied from approximately 5 to 10. Static pressure data characteristic of both open and closed cavity flows were obtained. An improved Rossiter method is presented that satisfactorily predicts the possible frequency modes within the cavity. Highest fluctuating pressure occurs on the aft bulkhead, peaking near Mach 1.5 for the conditions tested. Aeroacoustic levels are substantially reduced by installing suppression fences (spoilers) at subsonic and low supersonic conditions. Acoustic levels generally drop rapidly above Mach 1.5. (Author).

Download or read book Green Aviation written by Emily S. Nelson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-06-12 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aircraft emissions currently account for ~3.5% of all greenhouse gas emissions. The number of passenger miles has increased by 5% annually despite 9/11, two wars and gloomy economic conditions. Since aircraft have no viable alternative to the internal combustion engine, improvements in aircraft efficiency and alternative fuel development become essential. This book comprehensively covers the relevant issues in green aviation. Environmental impacts, technology advances, public policy and economics are intricately linked to the pace of development that will be realized in the coming decades. Experts from NASA, industry and academia review current technology development in green aviation that will carry the industry through 2025 and beyond. This includes increased efficiency through better propulsion systems, reduced drag airframes, advanced materials and operational changes. Clean combustion and emission control of noise, exhaust gases and particulates are also addressed through combustor design and the use of alternative fuels. Economic imperatives from aircraft lifetime and maintenance logistics dictate the drive for "drop-in" fuels, blending jet-grade and biofuel. New certification standards for alternative fuels are outlined. Life Cycle Assessments are used to evaluate worldwide biofuel approaches, highlighting that there is no single rational approach for sustainable buildup. In fact, unless local conditions are considered, the use of biofuels can create a net increase in environmental impact as a result of biofuel manufacturing processes. Governmental experts evaluate current and future regulations and their impact on green aviation. Sustainable approaches to biofuel development are discussed for locations around the globe, including the US, EU, Brazil, China and India.
Book Synopsis Aeroacoustics of Flight Vehicles: Theory and Practice. Volume 1: Noise Sources by :
Download or read book Aeroacoustics of Flight Vehicles: Theory and Practice. Volume 1: Noise Sources written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of aeroacoustics has matured dramatically in the past two decades. Researchers have gained significant theoretical and experimental understanding of the noise generated by aircraft power plants and their components. In addition, airframe noise and interior noise have been investigated extensively. The physical understanding obtained from these efforts has resulted in the development of hardware capable of reducing community noise and of meeting strict noise certification requirements. Reductions in overall sound pressure level of 20 to 30 dB have been obtained for some types of power plants, while in the same period their installed power has increased significantly. Current quiet flight vehicle designs are based on information reported in a multitude of journals, conference proceeding, research reports, and specialized books. Each of these scientific publications represents only incremental steps in the evolution of our present understanding of the various aeroacoustic noise generation and propagation mechanisms and procedures for noise control.
