Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Amazing . . . A must-have must-read bible for lovers of toy history and in particular toy soldiers. Absolutely glorious!” —Books Monthly Humans have made and collected toy soldiers from time immemorial. They amuse and comfort us, awaken our curiosity, turn aggressiveness into creativity. In The History of Toy Soldiers, Luigi Toiati, himself an avid collector and manufacturer of toy soldiers, conveys and shares the pleasure of collecting and playing with them. Far from a dry encyclopedia, it leads the reader through the fascinating evolution of the toy soldier from ancient times to the early twenty-first century. The author, as a sociologist with an interest in semiotics (the study of signs), offers truly original insights into why different types of toy soldiers were born in a given period and country, or why in a given size and material. The author’s writing is packed with factual detail about the different types of toy (and model) soldiers and their manufacturers, but also with anecdotes, nostalgia, wit and his enduring passion for the subject. Six hundred beautiful color photographs, many depicting the author’s own collection, complete this delightful book. “Toiati creatively delivers exhaustive details, captivating anecdotes and a sense of nostalgia that exudes the fundamental childhood joy of playing with toy soldiers combined with adult collectors’ wonderment at their charms.” —Toy Soldier & Model Figure “A book that will enter the annals of Toy Soldier collections as one of the best and most complete books on this topic.” —IPMS/USA “A great journey of exploration.” —Miniature Wargaming

Download or read book Watching War Films With My Dad written by Al Murray and published by Random House. This book was released on 2013-10-24 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Al Murray's (AKA The Pub Landlord) musing on his childhood where his fascination with history and all things war began. Have you ever watched a film with someone who, at the most dramatic scene, argues that the plane on screen hasn't been invented yet? Or that the tank rumbling towards the hero at the end of the film is the wrong tank altogether? Al Murray is that someone. Try as he might, he can’t help himself. Growing up in the 1970s, Al, with the help of his dad, became fascinated with the history of World War Two. They didn’t go to football; they went to battlefields. Because like so many of his generation whose childhood was all about Airfix, Action Man and Where Eagles Dare, he grew up in the cultural wake of the Second World War. Part memoir, part life obsession, this is Al Murray musing on what he knows best. And he’s sure to tell you things about history that you were never taught at school.

Book Synopsis The Vintage Years of Airfix Box Art by : Roy Cross
Download or read book The Vintage Years of Airfix Box Art written by Roy Cross and published by Crowood Press UK. This book was released on 2009-08-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Airfix has been commercially producing plastic kits since 1952 and its models have been made by successive generations of young boys and men alike. In the 1960s, a talented graphic artist called Roy Cross was commissioned to paint some of the box art for Airfix, and for a ten-year-period he provided many of the glorious paintings seen on the boxes, setting new standards for realism and accuracy. Many are still being used today, a full four decades later. Inside the pages of this book are some of Roy's best artworks, shown here in full format and in superb detail, with many reproduced here in book form for the very first time. As well as his vintage box art, Roy has included many sketches and alternative versions of his Airfix box art. After Roy left Airfix in 1974, the company went through a turbulent time. The present owners are Hornby, who have ambitious plans for Airfix and the other brands it acquired including Scalextric and Corgi. The decade that Roy Cross worked for Airfix, though, could be classed as their vintage era, with some of their finest models being produced then in their millions, ready for eager youngsters to build up into detailed miniature models of their favorite aircraft, ships and locomotives.

Book excerpt: This delightfully unusual book by H. G. Wells is a comprehensive guide to Little War, a game invented by Wells for "boys from twelve to one hundred and fifty years old and for that more intelligent sort of girls who like boys' games and books". A fascinating look at a bygone era, when boys were boys, and most girls (except the more intelligent ones) were girls. With a history of Little War, detailed instructions to playing it, a description of an exemplary game, extensions and amplifications to the game, and a final challenge by the author to his young readers. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

Book Synopsis Churchill's Last Wartime Secret by : Adrian Searle
Download or read book Churchill's Last Wartime Secret written by Adrian Searle and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2016-11-30 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s been a State secret for more than 70 years: The official line in the UK has always been that it never happened – but this new work challenges the assertion that no German force set foot on British soil during World War Two (the Channel Islands excepted), on active military service. Churchill’s Last Wartime Secret reveals the remarkable story of a mid-war seaborne enemy raid on an Isle of Wight radar station. It describes the purpose and scope of the attack, the composition of the raiding German force and how it was immediately, and understandably, ‘hushed-up’ by Winston Churchill’s wartime administration, in order to safeguard public morale. Circumventing the almost complete lack of official British archival documentation, the author relies on compelling and previously undisclosed firsthand evidence from Germany to underpin the book’s narrative and claims; thus distinguishing it from other tales of rumored seaborne enemy assaults on British soil during the 1939-45 conflict. After examining the outcome and repercussions of this astonishing incident, what emerges is an event of major symbolic significance in the annals of wartime history.
Book Synopsis Story of Matchbox Kits 1973-2010 by : Jean-Christophe Carbonel
Download or read book Story of Matchbox Kits 1973-2010 written by Jean-Christophe Carbonel and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2011-08-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who can ever forget the aircraft kits with the multicolored plastic parts? Unlike other makes, Matchbox just didn't suddenly appear one day on the plastic scale models scene. Matchbox came from the well-known range of die-cast vehicles of the same name. The Lesney company which used the brand name "Matchbox" was founded in 1953 by Mr Leslie Smith (who remained on the board of the company throughout his career - he died in 2005) and Mr Rodney Smith. It was this company that thought up these little "pocket money" vehicles and the ingenious packaging which gave them their name. The name came from the box which was the shape, size and color of a match box. The firm brought out scale models of planes, tanks, boats, motorbikes and cars but also little soldiers which all brightened the childhood days of today's forty-year olds... This book retraces the forty glorious years of a firm, of a brand of kits intended for beginners just as much as it was for the most demanding buffs. More than just a kit, a state of mind. Jean-Christophe Carbonel is a world renowned specialist of French model kits. His 20-years of experience with the European and Japanese model kit markets has enabled him to deal in depth with the French "model craze."

Download or read book Sixty Years of Airfix Models written by Jeremy Brook and published by Crowood. This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The best-known and most important manufacturer of plastic model kits in the UK, Airfix has been at the forefront of the industry since 1955 when the first Airfix aircraft kit appeared in UK branches of Woolworth's. The kits were made to a constant scale and covered a wide variety of subjects, from aircraft to birds and from tanks to dinosaurs. In 1981 the famous London-based company closed down and only the kits survived intact. For the next twenty-five years Airfix was run by Palitoy and later Humbrol, but suffered from a lack of investment. In 2006, Hornby Hobbies Ltd, the train and Scalextric manufacturer, bought the ailing company and transformed it. Money and resources were ploughed into the range, and today Airfix releases around twenty new kits per year, designed to an incredibly high standard. The old kits of the 1950s and 1960s are gradually being replaced by new state-of-the-art tooling, all bearing that most prestigious name - Airfix. Published to coincide with the sixtieth anniversary of the first Airfix aircraft kit, Sixty Years of Airfix Models, tells the full story, year by year, of the company and its products. Illustrated throughout with colour photographs.of kits, box art and completed models.
