Book excerpt: Measurements of ambient volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by proton transfer reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS) are reported from recent airborne and surface based field campaigns. The Southeast Texas Tetroon Study (SETTS) was a project within the TEXAQS 2005 field campaign, conducting airborne measurements that investigated the nocturnal Lagrangian transport of industrial plumes downwind of the Houston, Texas metropolitan area. On the evening of July 26-27, a polluted air mass with elevated mass 43, mass 45 and mass 57 VOCs along with elevated O3, CO, and NOx was tracked from the Houston metropolitan area to an area northwest of Shreveport, LA, a distance of over 200 miles. This campaign demonstrated that the PTRMS is capable of tracking a VOC plume over large distances and these measurements indicate that transport of VOCs, particularly light alkenes and their oxidation products, out of the Houston metropolitan area may need to be considered by areas downwind of the Houston area when they are determining how to attain their air quality goals. During the MILAGRO field campaign in March 2006 VOCs were measured by PTR-MS instrumentation on a rooftop in the urban mixed residential and industrial area north northeast of downtown Mexico City. Diurnal profiles of weekday and weekend/holiday aromatic VOC concentrations clearly show the influence of vehicular traffic during the morning rush hour time period and during the afternoon hours although a separate late afternoon peak is not seen. Plumes of toluene elevated as much as 216 parts per billion by volume (ppbv) and ethyl acetate elevated as much as 183 ppbv above background levels were observed during the late night and early morning hours. These plumes indicate the probability of significant industrial sources of these two compounds in the region. The high levels of toluene measured by our PTR-MS exceed levels that would be predicted by examination of the Mexico City Metropolitan Area (MCMA) emission inventory and when these VOC measurements are integrated with measurements conducted throughout the MCMA a better understanding of both the overall spatial pattern of VOCs in the MCMA as well as its variability will be attained.

Book excerpt: Proton transfer reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS) is a relatively new analytical technique ideally suited for real-time measurement of a wide range of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The VOCs may originate from any source, including groundwater release into the vadose zone, building vapor intrusion, and above ground vapor releases. Although PTR-MS has only been commercially available for approximately 15 years, the technology is based on the heavily studied and well-understood thermochemistry of ion-molecule reactions in the gas phase at moderate pressures of 2 mbar. Using H3O+ as a reagent ion, a proton transfers to compounds with a proton affinity greater than water, e.g., acetone, acetaldehyde, methanol, benzene, toluene, xylene, trichloroethylene, and many others present in soil gas or ambient air. For those volatile compounds not protonated by H3O+, such as vinyl chloride, tetrachloroethylene, or methane, NO+ or O2+ can be used. Water vapor flows into a hollow cathode where H+, H2+, OH+, and H2O+ are produced and then glide into a secondary drift tube reacting with H2O to produce H3O+. Interfering ions, such as NO+, O2+, and water clusters, are minimized by specifically tuning the ion source. The PTR-MS is ideal for trace gas measurements in air, as there are no reactions with the primary components of air, such as N2, O2, Ar, and CO2. No gas supply is necessary and the instrument is relatively small, requiring little maintenance and operating costs, allowing the instrument to be mounted in a van. Samples do not need to be prepared or pre-concentrated and there is no carrier gas. Air samples are introduced directly into the drift tube allowing for dynamic pore space sampling or VOC flux measurements. Long sampling lines can be used to transport the sample from the source to the instrument with no sensitivity loss. The instrument background ion signal is monitored periodically while acquiring real time data by delivering VOC free air to the instrument. The sensitivity is expressed in terms of the H3O+ count rate as normalized sensitivity (normalized counts per second). The H3O+ count rate varies throughout instrument operation as it depends on the age of the ion source, drift conditions, and applied detector voltage. For this reason, the normalized sensitivity is determined periodically during PTR-MS operation. The normalized counts per second are determined by normalizing the ion signal of a VOC in a calibration mixture (RH+cal) at a known mixing ratio (MRcal) to the reagent ion count rate expressed per million counts. A calibration blend of select VOCs in air or some permeation source gas is delivered to the instrument to calculate the normalized sensitivity and to calculate an ambient air or soil gas concentration of the VOC of interest. The sensitivity of the instrument allows the real-time measurement of VOC fluxes at mid- to low parts-per-trillion volume. The use of the mass spectrometer provides high specificity for monitoring specific compounds, while also delivering a wide dynamic range of operation.

Book excerpt: Proton Transfer Reaction - Mass Spectrometry (PTR-MS) is a soft chemical ionisation mass spectrometry technique frequently applied to measurement of volatile organic compound (VOC) abundance. The overarching aim of this thesis is to improve the quantification of compounds that have proved difficult or even impossible to separate or to quantify, through advanced understanding of the detection and ionisation mechanisms and developments in the instrumental design and operation of PTR-MS for deconvolution of mixtures. A new method for the preparation and use of diffusion tube methods as gas standards is reported. Detailed investigation of the ion-molecule reactions with chloroalkanes, chloroalkenes and other atmospherically important molecules, such as isoprene / 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol, benzene / ethylbenzene / o,m,p-xylene and methyl vinyl ketone / methacrolein were undertaken to determine the ion- molecule reaction mechanisms, allowing quantification of isomeric species through understanding of the reaction products and novel approaches to the switching of the reduced electric field strength (E/n). The modification of instrumental parameters of PTR-MS were investigated further for the quantification of semi volatile compounds (SVOCs) and more specifically, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Use of a radio frequency (RF) ion funnel and high temperature instrumentation allowed for sub nanogram limits of detection for many PAHs, including Benzo[a]pyrene.

Book excerpt: There are few published direct measurements of the atmosphere-surface exchange of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), particularly for biogenic VOCs (BVOCs). Global modelling of atmospheric chemistry and transport of BVOCs has large uncertainties due to the very small number of measurements in tropical regions, which are responsible for half the global BVOC emissions. This thesis presents direct measurements of concentrations and ecosystem fluxes of BVOCs in different regions (Tropics, Mediterranean) using the approach of virtual disjunct eddy covariance (vDEC) combined with proton transfer reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS) - a real-time BVOC sensor. The field measurements also included methodological developments of the vDEC/PTR-MS approach, which will be of value to the wider flux measurement community. A novel approach to determining the lag time between the vertical wind measurement and the air concentration measurement has been developed that will greatly reduce the uncertainty in the derived flux measurements. In the laboratory, the selectivity of PTR-MS was investigated by designing an alternating drift-voltage mode (AD-PTR-MS) to discriminate between structural isomers detected at the same m/z channel, with monoterpenes used as model compounds. The results of the measurements, particularly from the rainforest and oil palm plantations in Borneo, are novel and therefore provide important experimental constraints on models of atmospheric emissions, chemistry and transport. For example, although parameters which work reasonably well can be derived for model algorithms for the emission of isoprene from the rainforest, their performance over oil palms was less good, because of circadian controls of emissions from oil palms. However, the larger problem is the measured basal emission rates (BERs) which are significantly smaller than those used by default in the global MEGAN model. Another novel finding was the high deposition velocities of MVK and MACR (isoprene first order oxidation products) which at the oil palm plantation commonly exceeded 1 cm s-1; this result has implications for atmospheric modelling. The successful field results relied on significant developments in software for data acquisition and processing, and operational optimisation of the PTR-MS instruments in the extreme humidity encountered during the fieldwork in Borneo.
