Book excerpt: Each day, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) controls the take-offs, landings, and flights of over 50,000 aircrafts. To accomplish this mission safely and efficiently, the FAA must have a sufficient number of adequately trained air traffic controllers working at its air traffic control facilities. Over the next decade, the FAA will need to hire and train nearly 17,000 controllers to replace over 15,000 current controllers, most of whom will be retiring. This massive hiring effort will occur as the FAA begins to implement the next generation air transportation system (NextGen), which will integrate new technologies and procedures into air traffic operations and fundamentally change the role of air traffic controllers from controlling individual aircraft to managing air traffic flow. This book explores the current air traffic safety and control issues facing the Federal Aviation Administration today.

Book Synopsis Flight to the Future by : Panel on Human Factors in Air Traffic Control Automation
Download or read book Flight to the Future written by Panel on Human Factors in Air Traffic Control Automation and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1997-02-11 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the strong safety record of the national airspace system, serious disruptions occasionally occur, often as a result of outdated or failed equipment. Under these circumstances, safety relies on the skills of the controllers and pilots and on reducing the number of aircraft in the air. The current and growing pressures to increase the capacity to handle a greater number of flights has led to a call for faster and more powerful equipment and for equipment that can take over some of the tasks now being performed by humans. Increasing the role of automation in air traffic control may provide a more efficient system, but will human controllers be able to effectively take over when problems occur? This comprehensive volume provides a baseline of knowledge about the capabilities and limitations of humans relative to the variety of functions performed in air traffic control. It focuses on balancing safety with the expeditious flow of air traffic, identifying lessons from past air accidents. The book discusses The function of the national airspace system and the procedures for hiring, training, and evaluating controllers. Decisionmaking, memory, alertness, vigilance, sleep patterns during shift work, communication, and other factors in controllers' performance. Research on automation and human factors in air traffic control and incorporation of findings into the system. The Federal Aviation Administration's management of the air traffic control system and its dual mandate to promote safety and the development of air commerce. This book also offers recommendations for evaluation the human role in automated air traffic control systems and for managing the introduction of automation into current facilities and operations. It will be of interest to anyone concerned about air safety--policymakers, regulators, air traffic managers and controllers, airline officials, and passenger advocates.
Book Synopsis Cognitive Engineering and Safety Organization in Air Traffic Management by : Tom Kontogiannis
Download or read book Cognitive Engineering and Safety Organization in Air Traffic Management written by Tom Kontogiannis and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the Air Traffic Management (ATM) environment and the controller-crew interactions. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) regulations and organizational procedures are also presented in a succinct manner so that novel and experienced aviation practitioners appreciate how safety organization affects their cognitive performance. The book distills theoretical knowledge about human cognition and presents real examples and case studies to help readers understand how air traffic controllers make sense of difficult situations, make decisions under time pressure, detect and correct their errors, and adapt their performance to complex situations.

This book was released on 2011-05-24 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Department of Transportation Inspector General testified before the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Subcommittee on Aviation Operations, Safety, and Security about Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) oversight and management of air traffic operations. The Inspector General identified four areas where FAA faces particular challenges: (1) identifying and addressing the causes of operational errors, (2) mitigating controller fatigue risks, (3) adequately staffing the controller workforce, and (4) training new controllers. FAA statistics show a recent significant increase in operational errors by controllers; however, the causes of this reported increase remain unclear. FAA has also not yet fully implemented recommendations to identify potential factors that may contribute to controller fatigue and mitigate that risk.

This book was released on 2018-04-12 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decades of continuous efforts to address known hazards in the national airspace system (NAS) and to respond to issues illuminated by analysis of incidents and accidents have made commercial airlines the safest mode of transportation. The task of maintaining a high level of safety for commercial airlines is complicated by the dynamic nature of the NAS. The number of flights by commercial transports is increasing; air traffic control systems and procedures are being modernized to increase the capacity and efficiency of the NAS; increasingly autonomous systems are being developed for aircraft and ground systems, and small aircraftâ€"most notably unmanned aircraft systemsâ€"are becoming much more prevalent. As the NAS evolves to accommodate these changes, aviation safety programs will also need to evolve to ensure that changes to the NAS do not inadvertently introduce new risks. Real-time system-wide safety assurance (RSSA) is one of six focus areas for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) aeronautics program. NASA envisions that an RSSA system would provide a continuum of information, analysis, and assessment that supports awareness and action to mitigate risks to safety. Maintaining the safety of the NAS as it evolves will require a wide range of safety systems and practices, some of which are already in place and many of which need to be developed. This report identifies challenges to establishing an RSSA system and the high-priority research that should be implemented by NASA and other interested parties in government, industry, and academia to expedite development of such a system.
