Book excerpt: The tropospheric ozone concentrations over southern Africa are relatively high due to large precursor emissions from biomass burning, vegetation and anthropogenic sources and the intensity of solar radiation. In this study, we summarize ozone concentration data from both literature and new measurements. Further, we present data on the accumulated vegetation exposure to ozone in terms of the AOT40 index, which is calculated for the sites with hourly ozone and radiation data, with an aim to assess the potential for adverse effects on vegetation. As the seasonal variation of ozone concentrations is large, we discuss the effect of growing season onset on the stomatal gas exchange and the related potential for vegetation impacts. Finally, future research needs are discussed.

Book excerpt: In these proceedings of the 24th International Conference on Modelling, Monitoring and Management of Air Pollution, international academics and air pollution practitioners contribute to the evolving understanding of the science and policy contexts of air pollution. All the books from the conference series have discussed important air pollution issues at an international, national and local level and by virtue of their truly international composition have brought to the discussion a unique suite of perspectives. The conference findings enjoy a wide and rapid dissemination amongst the air pollution science and policy communities. The management of air pollution is one of the most challenging problems facing the international community. A particular strength of the series has been the attention given to regulatory and market solutions to air pollution management. The Air Pollution series of conferences has consistently acknowledged that science remains the key to identifying the nature and scale of air pollution impacts and reaffirmed that science is essential in the formulation of policy relevant information for regulatory decision making. The conference series also acknowledged, at a very early stage, that science alone will not improve a polluted atmosphere. The scientific knowledge derived from well-designed studies needs to be allied with further technical and economic studies in order to ensure cost effective and efficient mitigation. In turn, the science, technology and economic outcomes are necessary but not sufficient. Topics covered include: Air pollution modelling; Air pollution mitigation and management; Aerosols and particles; Emission studies; Health effects; Indoor air pollution; Air data quality; Monitoring and measuring; Case studies; Air pollution control technologies; Industrial air pollution; Air pollution science; Global and regional studies; Climate change effects; GIS & remote sensing applications; Emerging pollutants; Socio economic issues; Public engagement; Policy and legislation.

Book excerpt: In 11 articles reprinted from a 1999 journal and a 1998 anthology, South African social scientists and those from elsewhere who have worked there provide an overview of the environmental justice movement in the country, which blossomed only after the battle against apartheid was won in the early 1990s. They trace its history and describe the key theoretical and practical issues it faces after a decade, what has changed and what remained the same, the most and least effective strategies, and future directions. This book was released on 2003-12-15 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Air pollution is a problem affecting every part of our planet however, its global effects are poorly understood. This book provides the first truly global assessment of the scale of impacts of air pollution on crops and forests. The core of the book comprises assessments of the problem by experts from 12 different countries on every continent — describing the evidence of air pollution effects on crop yields and forest vitality with regard to environmental policies. These analyses are placed in the context of a global assessment of the scale of current and future air pollution levels, as well as in the socio-economic context of local production systems./a

Book Synopsis Air Pollution and the Forests of Developing and Rapidly Industrializing Regions by : John L. Innes
Download or read book Air Pollution and the Forests of Developing and Rapidly Industrializing Regions written by John L. Innes and published by CABI. This book was released on 2000-06-27 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the importance of air pollution for the forests of rapidly industrialising countries and regions. Its geographical coverage includes South and Central America, Africa, and Asia, including Siberia, China and Korea. The problems presented by air pollution are placed within the more general context of sustainable development within these regions and the historical legacy that they are attempting to deal with. Attention is drawn to the very serious problems associated with poor air quality in cities such as Mexico City and Chongqing, China. Air pollution in these areas is amongst the worst in the world. Several chapters examine the importance of forest fires as a source of air pollution, with particular reference being made to the Southeast Asian fires in recent years. The available information about the effects of this pollution on the surrounding forests is reviewed, and recommendations are made for a better understanding of the impacts. A final chapter reviews the recent developments in air pollution control policies in the different regions covered by the book.
