Book excerpt: Air ducts and related equipments are important components of climate and ventilation systems in order to distribute clean air, necessary for the occupied space, to whole system and to control thermal comfort. Despite of Turkish standards on air duct are present, studies on energy consumption associated with air leakage are very rare in Turkey, on the contrary to many developed countries. In this study, the subject of preventing energy losses related to the leakage, which causes inefficient working condition, has been investigated. Firstly, air duct system and quality requirements have been explained and the main standards have been analyzed for airtightness of air distribution systems, as well. Secondly, duct system measurements have been conducted by choosing two different approaches. One approach covers leakage calculation of a single duct by using European Standard called Eurovent, whereas the other one divides the system into single sections and uses the Power Law Model for calculation of leakage occurred in each section.Single duct leakage measurements were made on 300 mm and 1000 mm diameter circular ducts and 300 mm by 250 mm and 1000 mm by 500 mm flanged joint rectangular ducts for positive internal pressures. Test results showed that duct leakage depends on the method of duct fabrication, method of sealing, workmanship and static pressure differential. Furthermore, calculated leakage factors were under the allowable leakage limits in classification .C. for rectangular and circular ducts that were produced by Venco A.Ş. Comparing rectangular to circular ducts both had the same length of seam and surface area; the leakage from circular ducts was less than 80% from rectangular ducts. The air leakage from all test ducts, with the same lock seam type, decreases, whereas the surface area increases.Branched duct leakage measurements were made on 300 mm and 630 mm diameter circular ducts and 300 mm by 200 mm and 500 mm by 300 mm rectangular ducts and also air distribution system for positive internal pressures. Test results showed that fittings in a system cause sudden changes in static pressure; therefore, duct leakage depends on fitting locations. The leakage rate in Spiro sealed system was less than 5% Trelleborg sealed system. The leakage measured in this study showed that seam leakage accounts from 14% to 20% of the total in the two rectangular ducts and from 8% to 13% for the round ducts with Pittsburgh and Spiral lock seams. These data show that the joints are the major source of duct leakage. Improvement in duct construction leading to duct systems with less leakage will need to focus on better joints. Keywords: airtightness duct system, air duct leakage, duct leakage model, ductwork test procedure and methods.

Book excerpt: To comply with the International Energy Code, most states now require duct testing for both new construction and retrofit. Duct leakage testing provides an in-depth understanding of duct leakage testing procedures, methods of expressing results, and terminology. Building Science is the study of a building's interaction between the structure and its components. A structure's occupants, mechanical systems, and the surrounding outdoor environment all play a role in the performance of a building. Duct Leakage Testing covers: * Duct leakage testing methods or total leakage. * Leakage to the outside using a duct pressurization tester. * Modified blower door subtraction methods.

Book excerpt: Duct leakage in forced-air distribution systems has been recognized for years as a major source of energy losses in residential buildings. Unfortunately, the distribution of leakage across homes is far from uniform, and measuring duct leakage under normal operating conditions has proven to be difficult. Recently, two new methods for estimating duct leakage at normal operating conditions have been devised. These are called the nulling test and the Delta-Q test. Small exploratory studies have been done to evaluate these tests, but previously no large-scale study on a broad variety of homes has been performed to determine the accuracy of these new methods in the field against an independent benchmark of leakage. This sort of study is important because it is difficult in a laboratory setting to replicate the range of leakage types found in real homes. This report presents the results of a study on 51 homes to evaluate these new methods relative to an independent benchmark and a method that is currently used. An evaluation of the benchmark procedure found that it worked very well for supply-side leakage measurements, but not as well on the return side. The nulling test was found to perform well, as long as wind effects were minimal. Unfortunately, the time and difficulty of setup can be prohibitive, and it is likely that this method will not be practical for general use by contractors except in homes with no return ducts. The Delta-Q test was found to have a bias resulting in overprediction of the leakage, which qualitatively confirms the results of previous laboratory, simulation, and small-scale field studies. On average the bias was only a few percent of the air handler flow, but in about 20% of the homes the bias was large. A primary flaw with the Delta-Q test is the assumption that the pressure between the ducts and the house remain constant during the test, as this assumption does not hold true. Various modifications to the Delta-Q method were evaluated as possible improvements. Only one of these modifications provided improved results. This modification requires measuring the duct pressure relative to the house at either every pressure station within the Delta-Q test or at the extremes of the house pressure range involved in the Delta-Q test. If the pressures are only measured at the extremes, then calculated pressures at the other pressure stations are obtained via interpolation. Using these pressures reduced the bias in the Delta-Q test by about one-third.

Nationwide, authorities having jurisdiction have been adopting the 2015 International Energy Conservation Code, which eliminates the air barrier exception for climate zones 1, 2, and 3. This code change effects multifamily construction across much of the southern United States from Florida to California. Some design professionals do not know how to develop air barrier details, and some contractors do not know how to build air barrier details. This research provides the multifamily construction sector with air and water penetration knowledge for flanged window-to-wall integration detailing. Low-rise multifamily construction typically is multistory, wood-framed construction with vinyl-flanged windows. High-rise condo and apartment building construction typically utilizes metal framing, gypsum sheathing, and aluminum-flanged windows. Various water-resistive barriers (WRBs) as well as details from WRB manufacturers also are utilized. Few data indicate which detailing and installation methods are better for air and water penetration. Building wraps, sheathing systems with integral coatings, and fluid-applied WRBs can be applied according to ASTM E2112, Standard Practice for Installation of Exterior Windows, Doors and Skylights , Methods A, A1, B, and B1. These methods can be used with low-pressure foam at the interior perimeter or backer rod and sealant at the interior perimeter. Various options for flange sealant can be considered. We built six 48 mockups, each with the same simulated flanged window, according to a distinct yet common multifamily windowsill detail. We tested the mockups according to ASTM E1105, Standard Test Method for Field Determination of Water Penetration of Installed Exterior Windows, Skylights, Doors, and Curtain Walls, by Uniform or Cyclic Static Air Pressure Difference , and ASTM E783, Standard Test Method for Field Measurement of Air Leakage Through Installed Exterior Windows and Doors.

Book excerpt: ASTM has recently standardized a methodology for measuring the leakage of residential air distribution systems to unconditioned zones [ASTM Test Method for Determining the External Air Leakage of Air Distribution Systems by Fan Pressurization (E 1554-93)]. The standard includes two alternative leakage measurement techniques. One technique requires only a blower door, whereas the second technique requires a flow-capture hood as well as a blower door. This paper reports on the results of field measurements in 30 houses using both measurement techniques, and analyzes the relative strengths and weaknesses of the two techniques. The repeatability of each of the techniques, as well as the comparability of the results from the two techniques, is examined. A key issue addressed is the importance of duct pressure measurements in each of the two techniques. Analyses show that the leakage measured with the blower-door-only technique would have been negatively biased by 30% to 50% if the duct pressure had not been incorporated into the measurements and analyses as specified in the standard. Similarly, it is shown that supply leakage measurements with the flow-capture-hood technique would have been negatively biased by 33% if the envelope pressure differential had been used instead of the duct pressure differential.
