Book excerpt: The day before the daredevil stunt pilot, Black Jack Hosmer, crashed fatally in front of an air show crowd, he launched his 12-year-old son, Lori, into his own risky aerobatics, declaring him "The world's youngest pilot!" Joining the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1939, he became a military test pilot then led an 8th Air Force Bomb Group toward smashing Hitler's ambitions to conquer all of Europe. His ingenious, unorthodox attacks against the Germans forced the American authorities to either jail him or give him another medal. Lori Hosmer crossed paths and swords with military leaders but recruited President Roosevelt and Winston Churchill to sanction his wild-eyed tactics. After volunteering to obtain Nazi secrets to protect Eisenhower's D-Day invasion, Lori's spectacular victory celebration led the British allies to doubt the sanity of American flyers.

You’ll be right there as Jimmy Blackmon and his fellow Cavalry troopers track down and tangle with determined foes. You’ll experience the highs of triumph and the lows of bitter loss. Most importantly, you’ll see how and why Jimmy Blackmon learned hard-won leadership and battle lessons in the deadly skies of Iraq. Strap in. Hang on. Get ready to go hunting with the Air Cav.” —Daniel P. Bolger, Lieutenant General, U.S. Army, Retired, Commander, 1st Cavalry Division 2008-2010 “A great read by an exceptional combat aviator, leader, and writer! Jimmy Blackmon captures brilliantly the enthralling story of the air cavalry unit that was the eyes and ears of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) during the fight to Baghdad and throughout the first year in Iraq – when I was privileged to command the division. He captures vividly, as well, the courage, skill, and feel for the battlefield of the gifted pilot and commander of the squadron, Lieutenant Colonel Steve Schiller, to whom we turned repeatedly when the missions were the toughest.” —General David Petraeus (U.S. Army, Ret.) commanded the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Multinational Force-Iraq, US Central Command, and coalition and U.S. forces in Afghanistan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best known to Americans as the “singing cowboy,” beloved entertainer Gene Autry (1907–1998) appeared in countless films, radio broadcasts, television shows, and other venues. While Autry’s name and a few of his hit songs are still widely known today, his commitment to political causes and public diplomacy deserves greater appreciation. In this innovative examination of Autry’s influence on public opinion, Michael Duchemin explores the various platforms this cowboy crooner used to support important causes, notably Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal and foreign policy initiatives leading up to World War II. As a prolific performer of western folk songs and country-western music, Autry gained popularity in the 1930s by developing a persona that appealed to rural, small-town, and newly urban fans. It was during this same time, Duchemin explains, that Autry threw his support behind the thirty-second president of the United States. Drawing on a wealth of primary sources, Duchemin demonstrates how Autry popularized Roosevelt’s New Deal policies and made them more attractive to the American public. In turn, the president used the emerging motion picture industry as an instrument of public diplomacy to enhance his policy agendas, which Autry’s films, backed by Republic Pictures, unabashedly endorsed. As the United States inched toward entry into World War II, the president’s focus shifted toward foreign policy. Autry responded by promoting Americanism, war preparedness, and friendly relations with Latin America. As a result, Duchemin argues, “Sergeant Gene Autry” played a unique role in making FDR’s internationalist policies more palatable for American citizens reluctant to engage in another foreign war. New Deal Cowboy enhances our understanding of Gene Autry as a western folk hero who, during critical times of economic recovery and international crisis, readily assumed the role of public diplomat, skillfully using his talents to persuade a marginalized populace to embrace a nationalist agenda. By drawing connections between western popular culture and American political history, the book also offers valuable insight concerning the development of leisure and western tourism, the information industry, public diplomacy, and foreign policy in twentieth-century America.

A day after the crash, Carol, who was his girlfriend, and the sheriff discovered Cowboy missing for a few days. After his encounter with one of the aliens and his five days on their main UFOFROM, he showed up at Carol’s Café. To avoid Carol, the sheriff, the townspeople, the news reporter, and the UFO investigators from questioning him, he kept his secret for twenty years by saying, “I don’t remember.” However, many believed the Cowboy was abducted by the aliens. The Davenport businesspeople and city and county government did whatever they could to keep the tourists coming to visit with their UFO museum. Vern and Carol married and retired from ranching. One evening, they were entertaining the former sheriff and his wife. As the couples sat in the porch chairs to watch the sunset, an event took place that changed the lives of Vern and Carol.
