Book excerpt: The Clee Hills in Shropshire are designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty but few residents and even fewer visitors are aware that it is claimed that more people have been killed in air crashes on these hills than on any other highland area in Britain. Bernard O'Connor's research reveals that there were 19 air crashes on the Clee Hills between 1937 and 1975 with the loss of 43 lives. Whilst 23 were killed on the Brown Clee during the Second World War, Titterstone Clee claimed 11. It needs to be remembered that 17 survived their crashes. Those who lost their lives were 28 British personnel, six Germans, four Americans, four Canadians and one New Zealander. Four Avro Ansons came down, three Bristol Blenheims, two Vickers Wellingtons, a Flying Fortress, a Tiger Moth, an American Mustang, a Miles Magister, a Hawker Typhoon, an Airspeed Oxford, a Jet Provost, a Harrier Jet, a Junkers 88 and a Heinkel. It also needs to be stressed that many local people came out to help after the crashes, agricultural labourers, farmers, the Home Guard, Anti-Aircraft crews, Searchlight crews, troops from the King's Shropshire Light Infantry, the local police as well as staff from the RAF Maintenance (Rescue) unit and RAF Accident investigators. Local hospital staff, clergy, gravediggers and crematorium staff played an important role. Local photographers made a record of many of the crashes and reported from the local, and sometimes national, press ensured readers were provided the details. Using contemporary sources and the research undertaken by aviation historians, Philippa Hodgkiss, Glyn Warren, Adrian Durnell and Tom Thorne, this documentary history provides the human story of these many disasters and near disasters.

Each loop can be completed in a week or combined to form a two week 182 mile (290km) circuit that visits Stiperstones, Ludlow, Wenlock Edge, Ironbridge and the Wrekin. Split into 15 stages, this walk requires moderate fitness to cover the daily distance of 10 to 15 miles. The guide also includes the Stretton Skyline Walk, a 20 mile (32km) walk over Shropshire's peaks and ridges, which can be split over two days with an overnight stay in Church Stretton. For both the main route and the higher-level Stretton Skyline Walk, this guide provides in-depth route description and 1:50,000 OS mapping to aid navigation, along with information about accommodation, public transport and local services. The guide also offers plenty of insight into Shropshire's vibrant history and fascinating geology. The Shropshire Way visits some of England's most serene and beautiful scenery, as well as key historical sites including Ironbridge, the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. Through tranquil countryside and medieval market towns, this route explores all the best that the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding National Beauty (AONB) has to offer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1840s a bed of 'coprolites', thought by some to be fossilised dinosaur droppings, was discovered in the Cambridgeshire fens. Rich in phosphate it was much in demand by the nation's manure manufacturers. By the 1860s it was being dug up across much of the county. This book investigates the social, economic and archaeological impact of the fossil diggings in Horningsea, a small, rural community northeast of Cambridge.

This book was released on 2020-01-05 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Second World War, Gibraltar faced the threat of invasion by Italy, Germany, and Spain. The Abwehr, the German Intelligence Service, rather than use their own saboteurs, paid young Spanish men to undertake over sixty sabotage attacks on military installations and shipping with limited success. The Italian Decima Flotilla MAS, a specialist team of underwater frogmen, launched eight attacks which were relatively successful and Spanish Falangists made several unsuccessful attempts. The British Secret Intelligence Service endeavoured to stop or at least limit such attacks. Using contemporary files from the National Archives in Kew, autobiographies, biographies, histories and newspaper articles, this documentary history investigates the successes and failures of these attacks on Gibraltar and the roles played by intelligence officers, agents, double agents in discovering and preventing such acts. The book sheds light on an unusual and largely overlooked aspect of Gibraltar's history.

Book excerpt: During the Second World War, the British military and intelligence agencies had plans in case Germany invaded Spain and Portugal. This involved training British and Spanish agents to be secretly infiltrated to undertake sabotage operations on important lines of communication and liaising with pro-British locals. At the same time the Abwehr, Germany's military intelligence agency, paid young Spanish and Portuguese collaborators to undertake sabotage missions against Allied military and economic targets in Iberia but they had limited success. Italian saboteurs from the Decima Flotigglia MAS were more successful using underwater divers to attack Allied shipping. Using declassified files from Britain's National Archives, autobiographies, biographies and newspaper articles, this documentary history sheds new light on an unusual aspect of Iberian history telling a human story of international diplomacy, political intrigue, secret agents, clandestine warfare, military strategy, nationalism, and deception.
