Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Air traffic and the aviation industry have grown rapidly on the Chinese mainland in the two and a half decades since China's open door policy. Accession to the WTO will further stimulate trade and foreign direct investment (FDI), intensifying the demand for air cargo services. It will also open up the Chinese economy to foreign participation in the transportation and logistics sectors, making these sectors more competitive and efficient. This book provides a systematic and comprehensive study of China's air cargo industry as well as its policy evolution. It covers the sources and destinations of air cargo in mainland China and Hong Kong: whence it comes and where it goes to. The major hubs of the transportation network - Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Guangzhou - are discussed one by one. The virtual aspects of the network at these hubs in terms of IT applications, preparedness, and needs are examined and compared. Though the subject matter of this book is air cargo, there is considerable coverage of the aviation industry and policy on the mainland and Hong Kong. Changes have been happening so fast there are few books and publications that cover them systematically and comprehensively. Readership includes business executives in airfreight companies, airports and airlines, logistics specialists, aviation university lecturers and students.

Abstract: Abstract of Dissertation entitled "Air Cargo Industry in Hong Kong" Submitted by So Miu Sang For the degree of Master of Art in Transport Policy and Planning at the University of Hong Kong in June 2004 Given the excellent geographic and strategic location of the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), cargo has become one of the important industries in Hong Kong's overall economy. Hong Kong's market has seen a remarkable growth. It has averaged 11.2% per annum growth since 1992 and exceeded 2.6 million tones in 2003. The opening of Hong th Kong's new airport at Chek Lap Kok on 6 July 1998 marked a significant improvement in the quality and capacity of Hong Kong's aviation facilities, paving the way for a strong growth in passenger and cargo traffic. It has strengthened Hong Kong's position as an air cargo hub in the Asia Pacific Region and as the gateway to China. Moreover, under the "One Country, Two System" arrangement, Hong Kong is highly conducive to closer economic partnership with the Chinese Mainland. More opportunities will be given to Hong Kong. However, the rapid change of economic environment, development of new airports in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) such as Guangzhou and Shenzhen, and Asia Region's airports and the growing of Mainland China traffic have created a great threat to Hong Kong International Airport. This dissertation aims to provide a review of Hong Kong's air cargo industry and the development trends in the industry, and to analyze the competitive edge of Hong Kong International Airport as an air cargo hub in the Asia Pacific Region as well as the Pearl River Delta. It will also suggest strategies for strengthening Hong Kong's position as the leading hub and express cargo hub in Asia. The overall trend towards fast reliable delivery and the transformation of China's economy along with the value chain of production, have boosted demand for air transportation. Due to these developments, the air cargo market, which is still at low levels particularly in domestic transportation, is one of the fastest growing markets in China. The regional focus of this study is on the economic powerhouse of China, the Greater Pearl River Delta (GPRD) located in the southern province of Guangdong including Hong Kong and Macao. In many respects this is one of the most interesting economic entities of the world. Economy and infrastructure are integrated on a very high level. The GPRD features many extremes: its strong economic power, its rapid growth, the highest in China for many years, its population density and last but not least, its aviation landscape. Within radial distance of about 100 km, five international airports are at service, creating the highest airport density in the world. Three of these airports are among China's top five airports. The clear leader among them is Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), a major hub in Asia featuring the world's highest international air cargo throughput for many years. Its dominant counterpart for domestic traffic is located some 100 km north in the very heart of the PRD, Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (GBIA). The strong air cargo business of HKIA, that is largely fed by PRD freight has been watched closely by Mainland administrations. Liberalised air traffic policy in recent years has rapidly expanded China's own interna

Abstract: Currently, most of the research related to aviation sector of Hong Kong would focus on infrastructure perspective such as the building of 3rd runway in HKIA and the cooperation issues among airports in Pearl River Delta (PRD) Region in order to analyze the impact towards competitiveness of Hong Kong as a major international air cargo hub. However, there are not much research on air cargo industry has been done from security perspective but the recent trend of tightening international security requirement has already brought significant impact on the competitiveness of Hong Kong air logistics sector. In fact, the United States enacted the Aviation and Transportation Security Act (ATSA) after the 9/11 incident in 2001 already signaled a new era in air cargo transportation. Significant security measures have been implemented to all facilities shipping cargo to the United States and air cargo sector in Hong Kong would be included. Since most of the international air cargo that enters the United States transits through large hub facilities in Asia such as Hong Kong, there is a strong air cargo network linkage between Hong Kong and the United States. This study aims to understand the major development of international air cargo security requirement and the consequences for Hong Kong air cargo industry. This study also examines challenges of the requirement on Hong Kong air cargo industry from operational and economic perspective. An in-depth interview would be conducted to obtain industrial insights on developing recommendations on fulfilling the requirement in a cost-effective manner. This study would act as a stepping stone for further analysis on providing recommendations to facilitate the security requirement development in Hong Kong air cargo industry. Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it goes a famous saying by Confucius. My wish in writing this paper is to convince readers of the peculiar beauty and importance of the highly dynamic aviation landscape of the southern Chinese Pearl River Delta. Airfreight is an essential and highly sophisticated part of an economy s logistics infrastructure. A functioning infrastructure is vital for the development of an economy, in particular for its international trade. As trade is a key component in China s economic success formula, demand for an efficient infrastructure is high. Air transportation has become one of the most effective tools to explore and serve world markets. In today s highly competitive business world, just-in-time delivery and good customer service are absolutely crucial. The overall trend towards fast reliable delivery and the transformation of China s economy along with the value chain of production, have boosted demand for air transportation. Due to these developments, the air cargo market, which is still at low levels particularly in domestic transportation, is one of the fastest growing markets in China. The regional focus of this study is on the economic powerhouse of China, the Pearl River Delta (PRD) located in the southern province of Guangdong. Everyone who knows the highly industrialised landscape of the PRD would probably agree, that the region s nickname factory of the world is more than appropriate. The PRD has the highest per capita output in China and generates about one third of national exports. The Greater Pearl River Delta (GPRD) consists of the PRD and the Special Administrative Zones Hong Kong and Macao. In many respects, it is one of the most interesting economic entities of the world. Economy and infrastructure are integrated on a very high level. The GPRD features many extremes: its strong economic power, its rapid growth that has been the highest in China for many years, its population density and last but not least, its aviation landscape. Abstract: Abstract of dissertation entitled The Strategies to Sustain Hong Kong International Airport as the Air Cargo Hub in the Pearl River Delta Submitted by Lam Hon Chuen For the Degree of Master of Arts in Transport Policy and Planning at The University of Hong Kong in June 2003 To what extent Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) can sustain its strategic role as a regional cargo hub against competition from the airports in the Pearl River Delta is an important question for the Airport Authority. Despite the air cargo traffic just accounts for only 1% of the total cargo movement, it represents almost 27% of the total value of the Hong Kong's total trade. It is an important strategic industry of Hong Kong. The aim of this study is to formulate some strategies for the HKIA in sustaining its leading position as an air cargo hub through examining its present strengths and weaknesses and exploring its future opportunities and threats. To get more information and understand more about the internal factors of HKIA, a field research was conducted for this pursuit. And Porter's Five Forces Model was applied in analyzing those external factors influencing the status of HKIA. The results of this study indicate that HKIA in general is the dominant regional air- transportation hub and it will be able to maintain its edge in the foreseeable future despite the ambition of airports in the Pearl River Delta. However, at the same time, it is suggested that HKIA should adopt a low cost and differentiation strategies in order to enhance its leadership role. Book excerpt: Air cargo is a key element of the global supply chain. It allows outsourcing of manufacturing to other countries and links production in both multinational and smaller enterprises. It has also been the most important driver of certain export industries in countries such as South Africa, Kenya and Chile. As a component of the air transport industry, air cargo makes the crucial difference between profit and loss on many long-haul routes. This second edition of Moving Boxes by Air offers a comprehensive and up-to-date guide to the business and practices of air cargo, with chapters dedicated to key issues such as current trends, market characteristics, regulation, airport terminal operations, pricing and revenues, and environmental impacts. The book illustrates the recent emphasis on mergers at the expense of alliances, which have not had the impact that they had on passenger operations. The section on security has been expanded to assess in more depth the threats to aircraft from terrorists, particularly in the lower cargo and passenger baggage compartments. Surcharges are examined and the book considers whether all airlines will follow the lead of some to do away with both fuel and security surcharges. The book concludes with a summary of the latest industry forecasts. Fully updated throughout, this edition is the definitive guide to air cargo for professionals within both the aviation and freight industries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The initial rise of global supply chains is contributed by the “intermediate goods”, which accounts for 30-60% of the exports of G20 countries (The Economist, 2014). Given that many of these imported parts are either of high value or involved in just-in-time (JIT) production and service provision and hence are required to be shipped with high speed and high reliability, air transport is widely used in such type of global sourcing and production process. Air cargo transport and logistics in China, especially its Southern region and Hong Kong, deserves a comprehensive review and study, as parts and components are commonly shipped to this region from various countries for OEM (original equipment manufacturer) type production and then re-exported, in the form of finished products, to places where final consumers reside. In the case of air-borne trade related to China, the largest economy in Asia, Hong Kong has served as the entrepot and gateway for Mainland China for decades (Zhang, 2003). Thus, to have a good knowledge about China's air cargo transport and related issues, we should inevitably discuss the air cargo traffic at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA). Hong Kong's sophisticated airfreight logistics sector offers responsive JIT services for clients all over the world, making Hong Kong the world's No. 1 airfreight hub in terms of annual cargo volume. However, suffering from the global economic downturn since late 2008, international trade for imported components appears slowing down (The Economist, 2014) which is reflected in the volatile market performance of the air cargo industry in the recent years. Besides, various external factors in this region impose a huge uncertainty on the future of airfreight transport in Hong Kong and Southern China. Thus, this chapter firstly describes the air-borne trade pattern in Hong Kong, and then briefly reviews Lo et al. (2015)'s study on the impact of 2008 economic crisis on Hong Kong's air cargo demand. It finally discusses various issues and factors which might contribute to the changes since 2008 and emerging issues in this sector.
