Book Synopsis Brothas Be, Yo Like George, Ain't That Funkin' Kinda Hard On You? by : George Clinton
Download or read book Brothas Be, Yo Like George, Ain't That Funkin' Kinda Hard On You? written by George Clinton and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-10-21 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: **ONE OF THE BEST MUSIC BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY ROLLING STONE** The captivating memoir from “the emperor of intergalactic funk” (NPR) and most influential pop artists of our time—known for over forty R&B hit singles—George Clinton of Parliament-Funkadelic. George Clinton began his musical career in New Jersey, where his obsession with doo-wop and R&B led to a barbershop quartet—literally, as Clinton and his friends also styled hair in the local shop—the way kids often got their musical start in the ’50s. But how many kids like that ended up playing to tens of thousands of rabid fans alongside a diaper-clad guitarist? How many of them commissioned a spaceship and landed it onstage during concerts? How many put their stamp on four decades of pop music, from the mind-expanding sixties to the hip-hop-dominated nineties and beyond? One of them. That’s how many. How George Clinton got from barbershop quartet to funk music megastar is a story for the ages. As a high school student, George traveled to New York City, where he absorbed all the trends in pop music, from traditional rhythm and blues to Motown, the Beatles, the Stones, and psychedelic rock, not to mention the formative funk of James Brown and Sly Stone. By the dawn of the seventies, he had emerged as the leader of a wildly creative musical movement composed mainly of two bands—Parliament and Funkadelic. And by the bicentennial, Clinton and his P-Funk empire were dominating the soul charts as well as the pop charts. He was an artistic visionary, visual icon, merry prankster, absurdist philosopher, and savvy businessmen, all rolled into one. He was like no one else in pop music, before or since. Written with wit, humor, and candor, this memoir provides tremendous insight into America’s music industry as forever changed by Clinton’s massive talent. This is a story of a beloved global icon who dedicated himself to spreading the gospel of funk music.

Download or read book I Ain't Studdin' Ya written by Bobby Rush and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2021-06-22 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experience music history with this memoir by one of the last of the genuine old school Blues and R&B legends, the Grammy-winning dynamic showman Bobby Rush. This memoir charts the extraordinary rise to fame of living blues legend, Bobby Rush. Born Emmett Ellis, Jr. in Homer, Louisiana, he adopted the stage name Bobby Rush out of respect for his father, a pastor. As a teenager, Rush acquired his first real guitar and started playing in juke joints in Little Rock, Arkansas, donning a fake mustache to trick club owners into thinking he was old enough to gain entry. He led his first band in Arkansas between Little Rock and Pine Bluff in the 1950s. It was there he first had Elmore James play in his band. Rush later relocated to Chicago to pursue his musical career and started to work with Earl Hooker, Luther Allison, and Freddie King, and sat in with many of his musical heroes, such as Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Jimmy Reed and Little Walter. Rush eventually began leading his own band in the 1960s, crafting his own distinct style of funky blues, and recording a succession of singles for various labels. It wasn't until the early 1970s that Rush finally scored a hit with "Chicken Heads." More recordings followed, including an album which went on to be listed in the Top 10 blues albums of the 1970s by Rolling Stone and a handful of regional jukebox favorites including "Sue" and "I Ain't Studdin' Ya." And Rush's career shows no signs of slowing down now. The man once beloved for performing in local jukejoints is now headlining major music/blues festivals, clubs, and theaters across the U.S. and as far as Japan and Australia. At age eighty-six, he is still on the road for over 200 days a year. His lifelong hectic tour schedule has earned him the affectionate title "King of the Chitlin' Circuit," from Rolling Stone. In 2007, he earned the distinction of being the first blues artist to play at the Great Wall of China. His renowned stage act features his famed shake dancers, who personify his funky blues and his ribald sense of humor. He was featured in Martin Scorcese's The Blues docuseries on PBS, a documentary film called Take Me to the River, performed with Dan Aykroyd on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and most recently had a cameo in the Golden Globe nominated Netflix film, Dolemite Is My Name, starring Eddie Murphy. He was recently given the highest Blues Music Award honor of B.B. King Entertainer of the Year. His songs have also been featured in TV shows and films including HBO's Ballers and major motion pictures like Black Snake Moan, starring Samuel L. Jackson. Considered by many to be the greatest bluesman currently performing, this book will give readers unparalleled access into the man, the myth, the legend: Bobby Rush.
Download or read book Ain't No Makin' It written by Jay MacLeod and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic text addresses one of the most important issues in modern social theory and policy: how social inequality is reproduced from one generation to the next. With the original 1987 publication of Ain't No Makin' It, Jay MacLeod brought us to the Clarendon Heights housing project where we met the 'Brothers' and the 'Hallway Hangers'. Their story of poverty, race, and defeatism moved readers and challenged ethnic stereotypes. MacLeod's return eight years later, and the resulting 1995 revision, revealed little improvement in the lives of these men as they struggled in the labor market and crime-ridden underground economy. The third edition of this classic ethnography of social reproduction brings the story of inequality and social mobility into today's dialogue. Now fully updated with thirteen new interviews from the original Hallway Hangers and Brothers, as well as new theoretical analysis and comparison to the original conclusions, Ain't No Makin' It remains an admired and invaluable text.

Shacago's determined to provide his family with the life that he's never had even if it means living vicariously through Rosé, who’s running the now successful Rosé’s Tattoo Shop. No matter how much the game entices him with the promise of easy money and a legacy many have died for, Shacago’s seduced back into the tattoo world, this time by a new pretty face with skin that reminds him of someone he used to know... Stuck in a love triangle of her own is Rosé, the new “It” girl in the industry thanks to her blossoming relationship with boxing champion, Marquise Meriwether. Although Marquise is everything she could ask for in a man—he’s generous, makes legit money, and treats her like a queen—Rosé finds herself constantly worried about the woes of Shacago. It doesn’t help when Parai, the new girl at the shop, enters the picture trying to put them together when life and circumstances may have torn them apart for good. Soon Rosé has to make the choice: since love doesn’t pay the bills, does it matter where the money comes from? Humbled by an unlikely enemy, Xavier is scrambling to make up the bed of lies he's created. The sur-de-soi attitude he’s used to wreak havoc on the lives of his loved ones has come to a halting stop at the introduction of a weapon that no gun of his could ever kill. An envelope. More specifically—the envelope that holds the power to destroy not only his life, but the once unbreakable bond he shares with Shacago. With his lies catching up to him and the finish line nowhere in sight, Xavier is forced to man up and handle his problems like the beast he is or to drop down in defeat. Will Shacago have a second chance at love? Will Rosé accept that love doesn’t always come in the perfect package? Will Xavier lose his battle for the almighty dollar? Find out in the next installment of Ain't Nothing Like a Real One 2: Faded Off an Inked God.
