Book excerpt: "A masterpiece of contemporary Bible translation and commentary."—Los Angeles Times Book Review, Best Books of 1999 Acclaimed for its masterful new translation and insightful commentary, The David Story is a fresh, vivid rendition of one of the great works in Western literature. Robert Alter's brilliant translation gives us David, the beautiful, musical hero who slays Goliath and, through his struggles with Saul, advances to the kingship of Israel. But this David is also fully human: an ambitious, calculating man who navigates his life's course with a flawed moral vision. The consequences for him, his family, and his nation are tragic and bloody. Historical personage and full-blooded imagining, David is the creation of a literary artist comparable to the Shakespeare of the history plays.

Book excerpt: If you're a woman who feels like you don't have time to study the Bible in a deep and meaningful way, this is the book for you. 1 Samuel is a combination of Chris's ability to unpack scripture in deep, practical ways and Hope's ability to create questions that guide the reader and apply God's word. Designed to be completed in just twenty minutes, each study is both substantive and time efficient and is useful for individual and group studies. What Others are Saying: "In a culture where many have little knowledge of the Bible, and question the relevance of the Old Testament specifically, studies like this are increasingly important. By asking the reader to think through the passages on their own, then orienting them in the place and time of both the author and hearers, this study helps bridge the gap between now and then and points us to what is to come." Kristi James, Acquisitions Editor for P&R Books "I felt God's heart for women jumping off the page. The questions brought out a rich balance of biblical history and emotional responses to God's Spirit at work. It was a joy to delve deeply into the word of God in a framework compatible to the life and responsibilities of a woman." -Heidi Faulkner, missionary for Campus Crusade for Christ "I appreciate the combination of historical context, current application, emotional honesty, and connection to personal story. I love the use of the words like 'hurt' and 'scared' in the reflection questions as it draws out the truth and messiness of our emotional experience in our relationship with God. These studies have depth of richness and authenticity while being brief and attainable for women who have full lives and yet are committed to study the Bible." -Stephenie Craig, LCSW, pastor's wife and therapist Christine B. Gordon, MATS, is wife to Michael, who is an ordained PCA pastor, and mother of three. She earned her master of arts in theological studies at Covenant Seminary. When she has time she loves to sleep, walk, and sew, in that order. Hope A. Blanton, MSW, is wife to Ray and mother of three. She earned her master's in clinical social work at Temple University. Currently she works as the women's ministry equipper at Redeemer PCA of Lincoln, Nebraska. She loves good food, making people laugh, and being outside.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By investigating thousands of descriptions of epidemics reaching back before the fifth-century-BCE Plague of Athens to the distrust and violence that erupted with Ebola in 2014, Epidemics challenges a dominant hypothesis in the study of epidemics, that invariably across time and space, epidemics provoked hatred, blaming of the "other", and victimizing bearers of epidemic diseases, particularly when diseases were mysterious, without known cures or preventive measures, as with AIDS during the last two decades of the twentieth century. However, scholars and public intellectuals, especially post-AIDS, have missed a fundamental aspect of the history of epidemics. Instead of sparking hatred and blame, this study traces epidemics' socio-psychological consequences across time and discovers a radically different picture: that epidemic diseases have more often unified societies across class, race, ethnicity, and religion, spurring self-sacrifice and compassion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The biblical story of King David and his conflict with King Saul (1 and 2 Samuel) is one of the most colorful and perennially popular in the Hebrew Bible. In recent years, this story has attracted a great deal of scholarly attention, much of it devoted to showing that David was a far less heroic character than appears on the surface. Indeed, more than one has painted David as a despicable tyrant. Paul Borgman provides a counter-reading to these studies, through an attentive reading of the narrative patterns of the text. He focuses on one of the key features of ancient Hebrew narrative poetics -- repeated patterns -- taking special note of even the small variations each time a pattern recurs. He argues that such "hearing cues" would have alerted an ancient audience to the answers to such questions as "Who is David?" and "What is so wrong with Saul?" The narrative insists on such questions, says Borgman, slowly disclosing answers through patterns of repeated scenarios and dominant motifs that yield, finally, the supreme work of storytelling in ancient literature. Borgman concludes with a comparison with Homer's storytelling technique, demontrating that the David story is indeed a masterpiece and David (as Baruch Halpern has said) "the first truly modern human."

Book excerpt: David's remarkable life, insights, and achievements inspire us today. David's story is compelling, exciting -- with "chance" encounters, narrow escapes, beautiful women, and a warrior who carves out an empire. David is a singer-songwriter, whose body of work is revered by millions of fans three thousand years after his death. His character encourages us, his weaknesses speak to us, his faith moves us. He is the king of Israel's Golden Age and points us to his great descendant, the Son of David, Jesus Christ the Lord. This book is designed to aid your study of David's life, with a special emphasis on what we can learn as Jesus' disciples today. Twenty maps and charts help you understand his family, as well as the geography of his sojourns, escapes, battles, and conquests. The historical background and geopolitical context will help you to appreciate David in his own world and grasp his internal complexity. Classes and small groups will find this a helpful curriculum guide to their study of 1 and 2 Samuel, with links to free participant handouts as well as thorough preparation for the leader. Thought-provoking questions will stimulate many insightful discussions. Preachers and teachers will find a great deal of their research done for them. Lessons are heavily footnoted for those who want to dig deeper, but are optional for the general student. According to Paul, "David ... served God's purpose in his own generation." Your understanding of David's life and faith will help you to live out God's plan for you in your own generation.
