Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the proceedings of the International Conference on AIDS Associated Syndromes held at Irvine on December 7-8, 1984. The purpose of this conference was to bring together investigators who are actively engaged in AIDS research to present their most recent data with regard to etiological agent(s) of AIDS, immunological characteristics of some of the patients in early stages of AIDS and various therapeutical modalities that are available for the treatment of AIDS, early AIDS (persistent generalized lymphadnopathy) or for those who demonstrate asymptomatic acquired immunodeficiency. In the area of etiological agents, the discussions are presented dealing with the questions of whether HTLV III/LAV alone or with other co-factor(s) like EBV or CMV are responsible for AIDS. What is the relationship of these viruses to Kaposi's sarcoma, since Kaposi's sarcoma in AIDS cannot be simply explained on the basis of the underlying immune deficiency? Data are presented for HTLV III/LAV interactions with the T4 molecule on the surface of helper T cells. A paper is presented with epidemiologicai evidence for AIDS being an African disease which perhaps was brought to the United States and then to Haiti.

Book excerpt: The science of the virus and its effects and the clinical approaches to its treatment and transmission prevention are placed in the context of the history and epidemiology of the HIV-AIDS pandemic. Each organ system of the body is explored as to manifestations of the disease, treatment now and in the future, as well as what the disease has taught us about the immune response. The science of epidemiology, which is so important in allowing for tracking of the disease and potential limitation of transmission, is another aspect of AIDS explored in detail. The pandemic manifests differently in different parts of the world, and the relevance of the volume is enhanced by its international group of contributors. No other text provides the historical and epidemiological context of this disease along with an update of diagnosis and treatment. The underlying science and epidemiology of AIDS are not neglected, so the student or clinician who is treating patients with AIDS can gain a full understanding of HIV/AIDS in individual patients and in their communities.

Skin being the largest organ of the body and with mucous membranes, it is the main portal of HIV infection. There is a lot of scope for research in the field of HIV and AIDS, and there is a need for an updated literature that would throw a light on the efficient diagnosis and management of cutaneous manifestations in HIV disease. Hence we are bringing out this eBook which is a comprehensive literature on HIV and its various cutaneous manifestations in its entirety. In this eBook we have provided extensive data and information on various skin related infections, papulosquamous disorders, disorders of vasculature, pruritic papular eruptions, neoplasias, adverse drug reactions and other hair, nail, oral and ocular associated disorders in HIV. The work has been sufficiently researched and contributed by experts in this field. Clinical photographs and extensive scientific literature will enhance the knowledge and confidence of the readers particularly clinicians and postgraduates to efficiently diagnose and manage cutaneous diseases in HIV infected patients. We acknowledge the work and sincere efforts of all the contributors who have made this project to happen. Sincere thanks to Dr. Eswari L and Dr. Shwetha S for their support and help in bringing out this edition. Thanks to my spouse and daughters for their encouragement and support and especially to the publishers without whom this work would go unnoticed. We hope that this conscious effort will benefit the readers and in turn the people living with HIV- AIDS at large.
