Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Debates about public expenditure in the agricultural sector have reopened in many developing and emerging economies because of high budget deficits and changes in public opinion. As a result, agricultural policy in many of these countries is beginning to take a more market-oriented approach to agrarian problems, most notably through the introduction of contract farming. This book explores the policy issues around contract farming and its transformative potential and addresses the lack of empirical research on this topic by focusing on South Asia: principally India, Bangladesh and Nepal. The book first addresses the effects of contract farming (vertical coordination) on productivity, food security indicators (yield, consumption expenditures, prices), employment and input usage. Then it draws lessons from the South Asian case studies on the impact of institutional changes, like contract farming, on income and food security of smallholder households. The core of the book includes case study chapters on several commodities that are produced under contract farming, including vegetables and fisheries in Bangladesh, low-value crops in Nepal and coffee in India. Other chapters also explore contracts, storage, input usage and technical efficiency in these cases. This book serves as an essential guide to academics, researchers, students, legislative liaisons and think tank groups interested in agrarian issues, agricultural economics and agricultural policy in emerging economies and particularly in South Asia.

This book was released on 2004-02-04 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latest Edition: Southeast Asia: The Long Road Ahead (3rd Edition) Southeast Asia is going through tremendous changes. The market-oriented economies of Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand have been showing robust growth, particularly before the Asian financial crisis of 1997/98. The transitional economies of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam are also exhibiting signs of economic awakening and revival after years of internal political and social turmoil. Despite these encouraging signs, the region still has a long road ahead to achieve developed nation status. Southeast Asia: The Long Road Ahead is a serious and concise study on various important economic aspects of Southeast Asia. Existing economic studies on the region are mainly topical in nature. Most of the publications only attempt to offer a partial treatment of the issues and fail to examine these issues in a holistic manner. The objective of this book is to provide a more complete cross-country discussion on the economic issues and problems facing Southeast Asia. Besides critically examining the multiple facets of changes and problems that have been and will be encountered by Southeast Asia, the book also presents a lucid exposition on the prospects of the region. However, it does not stop there. It moves on to provide pointers and suggestions on how Southeast Asian countries should proceed with their development options and processes. The book should be of interest to economists, graduate students on Southeast Asia and all those who want to have a better knowledge and understanding of the important Southeast Asian region.

Book excerpt: "This is an important and up-to-date (including a chapter on the Asian financial crisis and recovery) book by a most pre-eminent economist, who does not only have a distinguished academic career but also actual policy involvement at a high level. The book mixes accurate description with interesting theoretical analysis (notably the author's theories of EGOIN, Triple C, and the S Curve) and sensible policy recommendations." Professor Yew-Kwang Ng Professor of Economics, Department of Economics Monash University, Melbourne, Australia "This is an important study of the economies of South-East Asia. Professor Lim draws upon many years of research and experience to make comparisons between countries and to track changes over time. His title reflects his optimism but also his caution. Much has been done. Much remains to be done. There is a long road ahead before the countries of South-East Asia can look back on their achievements and say that they are fully developed at last." Professor David Reisman Visiting Professor of Economics Nanyang Technological University, Singapore "This book provides a comprehensive analysis of Southeast Asia's economic progress and prospects. Written by one of the region's most distinguished development economists, the book will be welcomed by graduate students and researchers and by policy-makers in the region, all of whom will learn much from this authoritative and insightful volume." Professor Colin Kirkpatrick Professor of Economics and Director Institute for Development Policy and Management The University of Manchester, Manchester, United Kingdom "There are very few economists in Southeast Asia today who can writeauthoritatively about Southeast Asian economies, and Professor Lim is prominently one among these few. The book leads the readers through more than 40 years of postwar development to the present day where many of these Southeast Asian nations are recovering from the recent devastating economic crisis. Professor Lim's insights into the economic history and development of countries in Southeast Asia make the readers feel comfortable to go through the book quickly. After finishing it, most of us should feel confident that Southeast Asia is still a unique region, and despite the current economic crisis, there is still great economic future for Southeast Asians." Dr Medhi Krongkaew Professor of Economics and Director Institute of East Asian Studies Thammasat University, Bangkok, Thailand "Southeast Asia has gone a long way to what it has become today. It has yet to travel another long road ahead to becoming an economically developed region. The author has successfully described the region's milestones and obstacles, both in looking back and in looking into the future. It also offers a useful theoretical construct to prescribe and predict Southeast Asia's development process. The book is to date the most comprehensive treatment of Southeast Asia as an economic region. It is even more valuable as it is written by an insider to the region and its development problems. This is the textbook the region has been waiting for. In fact, it is a book for every interested person to read." Dr Hadi Soesastro Executive Director Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) Jakarta, Indonesia " it is very well written and thoroughly researched. The volume clearly achievesthe author's stated intention of providing a useful book to both graduate and undergraduate students whose academic foci is on Southeast Asia, and to policy-makers and others who are interested in policy options in the ten ASEAN countries this reviewer recommends the book enthusiastically and without reservation." In this regional comparative study of country experiences, the author demonstrates the considerable scope for complementarity between economic growth and poverty alleviation in the development process. Government policies are shown to have been a major determinant of the development path for the East Asian countries, including the outcomes in income growth and distribution. The study sheds light on the types of policies conducive to both economic growth and poverty reeducation, and provides important lessons for the other developing countries.

Book excerpt: More than the Soil focuses on the social, cultural, economic and technological processes that have transformed rural areas of Southeast Asia. The underlying premise is that rural lives and livelihoods in this region have undergone fundamental change. No longer can we assume that rural livelihoods are founded on agriculture; nor can we assume that people envisage their futures in terms of farming. The inter-penetration of the rural and urban, and the degree to which rural people migrate between rural and urban areas, and shift from agriculture to non-agriculture, raises fundamental questions about how we conceptualise the rural Southeast Asia and the households to be found there. The book makes extensive use of case study material to illustrate and support the arguments presented. There is also a conscious attempt to bridge the apllied-conceptual divide and to embed the Southeast Asian experience within the wider context of the rural South. Jonathan Rigg is a Lecturer in the Department of Geography, University of Durham. He has had a long-standing interest in rural development in Southeast Asia and has published widely on the subject with reference to the region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Asia has been the world engine of economic growth since World War II, growth rates have differed sharply among the countries of the region. Still, all Asian countries have experienced some degree of growth limitation. Japan is facing the crucial issue of a quickly aging and shrinking population, a situation that South Korea is bound to face in the near future too. China, which still enjoys relatively high growth rates, is dealing with an exhaustion of its export-led growth model based on low wages, as well as huge and unprecedented environmental problems. In addition, food supply is still a concern for most Asian countries in spite of huge increases in productivity in the agricultural sector, the main reason being that global demand for food products has been increasing at an even higher speed. This edited collection focuses on the policies – at the macroeconomic level – and strategies – at the micro-meso economic levels – that need to be deployed in order to overcome the limits to growth in a post-global financial crisis and export-led growth context. It will be of interest to all scholars of economics, management and the political sciences who work on the economies of East Asia, and also to all those who work on the theme of 'transition economies'.
