Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Agricultural Zoology The subject treated in the following chapters, Agricultural Zoology, has perhaps been more neglected in England than any other branch of science applied to agriculture: even the name itself is hardly at present understood. It is true, indeed, that the labours of Curtis, and in later years of Miss Ormerod, have developed one branch of economic zoology - namely, the part played by insects in causing disease amongst animals and plants; it is true also that some of our veterinary surgeons have done excellent work on the other parasitic diseases of animals; but there remains a vast portion of the subject that has neither gained the attention of English scientific men nor been summarised in an English text-book. Agricultural Zoology treats of the life-histories, the habits, the peculiarities of all the animals which affect for good or for evil our stock and crops, whether on the farm or in the garden, and the structure and development of domestic animals. Parasitism plays an important part in this subject, especially in the worms; but the economic effects of parasites are not confined to worms the parasitic insects, the minute protozoa, equally take their annual and preventable toll of our flocks and herds. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agricultural Zoology The present volume of the Thaer Library was undertaken with the intention of providing agricultural colleges with a condensed review of the entire animal kingdom, but treating in greater detail the animals harmful or helpful to agriculture. I have, however, omitted all reference to the domesticated farm animals, as in all such institutions these are treated of, not by the zoologist, but by the lecturer on stock-breeding. Although the book is not allowed to exceed a certain size, I have taken great pains to make it intelligible, and venture to hope that it may be found suitable for the private use of the practical farmer. This book was released on 2016-09-14 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hawks and Owls of the United States in Their Relation to Agriculture It is important to observe that all the rapacious birds are slow breed ers, and, contrary to popular belief, there is no good evidence that any of them have two broods a year, though of course if the first set of eggs is lost another one will be deposited. There is every reason why they should not raise more than one brood, for notwithstanding the fact that they breed very early in the year, the young grow slowly and remain a long time in the nest. Hence the tax upon the parent birds to secure enough food to satisfy the enormous appetites of their slow-growing progeny is very great, probably twice that made upon the members of any other order of land birds. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds of Ontario in Relation to Agriculture N O reliable estimate has ever been made of the annual loss to the farmers Of Ontario by the depredations of insects. In the United States much careful attention has been given to the subject, and in a report of the Department Of Agriculture at Washington, issued in 1912, Dr. Henshaw estimates the loss to the agricultural interests of that country at upwards of Our losses will certainly be as large proportionately. This loss is caused chiefly by reason of an insufficiency of bird life on our cultivated lands; experience the world over has shown that as bird life decreases insects increase; also, that birds are more efficient in keeping down insect pests than are all other agencies, natural and artificial, combined. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Judging Farm Animals At the present time departments of animal husbandry are features of all American agricultural colleges, and system atic courses in judging farm animals are given, in which laboratory practice is an important feature. Not only this, but thousands of young men have already received instruction in this subject in our colleges, many of whom are now actively engaged in farming, where animal hus bandry is a factor, requiring a knowledge of form and function. In the preparation of this volume, the author has had in view a purpose, rather distinctive in itself, of discussing. Download or read book Outlines of Economic Zoölogy (Classic Reprint) written by Albert Moore Reese and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Economic Zoology The book may be used in several ways. As followed by the author, the course may be given as a separate one to students who have already had the regular elementary course in general zoology. In this case the students will be familiar with the classification, structure and habits of most of the type forms discussed, but, if desired, additional labo ratory work may be arranged for the study of certain parasitic and other economically important forms not generally considered in a general laboratory course. Or, the text might be used in a beginning course in zoology by some amplification of the morphologic and other aspects and considerable increase in laboratory work. Again, it could well be used as supplementary reading with, say, one hour credit per semester for the year, in connection with the regular elementary course in general zoology. It is thought that, used in one or other of these ways or in some still different way, it should be especially useful to students in agriculture, who want a practical course. Various sources of information have been drawn upon, and recognized authorities in each subject consulted so far as possible. The publications of the Government, especially those of the Department of Agriculture, have been freely used and quoted. The figures have been borrowed largely, either from technical or from more popular works, whichever gave the best ideas of the animals portrayed; the source is indicated in every case. The brief bibliography at the end of the book is merely to aid the student, who may have become especially interested in some animal or group, to get more detailed information. Download or read book Farm Live Stock of Great Britain (Classic Reprint) written by Robert Wallace and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Farm Live Stock of Great Britain Agriculture is an art, or if it be, it is one of such inferior order that it must not be put on the same platform with other arts; although of all arts it is undeniably the oldest and the most widely distributed, as well as the most im portant, the most indispensable, the most interesting, and the most elevating. With another school of philosophers it is not a science, though in each of its varied and numerous branches it involves the most complicated scientific processes. Agriculture can afford to smile at such pedantry, and excuse it on the plea of ignorance, as was done in olden times. She has also the consola tion of knowing that, in spite of the modern philosopher's ingratitude to, and want of appreciation of, Agriculture (in which he contrasts unfavourably with his prototype of Egypt, Carthage, or Rome), yet not a day passes without repeated acknowledgment in deed, if not in word, of his absolute dependence upon her for his very existence; an undeniable proof that in this respect, in spite of all his assumed airs of superiority, the pedantic philosopher is in no superior position to the most humble toiler in the farmyard or the field.
