Book excerpt: Excerpt from North Carolina Agricultural Statistics, 1982 The month of July began on a positive note with timely and substantial rains occurring across the entire state. The moisture was received at a very critical stage for the proper development of several crops, especially corn. Flue-cured tobacco and vegeta ble harvests were the primary farm activities during the month and both carried well into the month of August. Soil moisture remained at about the same levels into the month of August, but showers had begun to occur on a more regular basis. Burley tobacco harvest had geared up by the mid dle of the month along with corn for silage and apples. Yields for most crops appeared to be at least normal or better with the apple and geach crops being off just slightly.
