Book Synopsis Structural Adjustment & the African Farmer by : Alex Duncan
Download or read book Structural Adjustment & the African Farmer written by Alex Duncan and published by Heinemann Educational Books. This book was released on 1992 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the impact of structural adjustment policies upon the incomes and welfare of Africa's peasant farmers who currently operate at very low levels of productivity of both land and labour and are confronted with low household income and inadequate food security. A common method has been applied across five countries. Analyses have been made of the links between national economic policies and the various markets in which the smallholders operate, and the services and infrastructures which influence their productive capacities. There are differences in the resource base and the level of ecological deterioration, in export opportunities, in physical infrastructure and, in particular, in the depth and nature of economic policy reforms. The team have recognised the important differences between these five countries and overcome the formidable problems of collecting agricultural data in Africa. The book provides firm evidence of the impact, both positive and negative, of structural adjustment. The editors argue for a more targeted, project-specific approach to small farmer development. This complements the current, donor interest in policy related aid support.

Book excerpt: As a result of the regional debt crisis, most governments of Latin America in the 1980s entered into a process of profound policy change, from an import substitution oriented strategy to a focus upon export-promotion, with an emphasis upon market liberalisation. Book excerpt: With the adoption of a World Bank-sponsored structural adjustment programme in the mid-1980s, Guinea underwent a dramatic change in its economic and agricultural policies. The country's experience over the past decade illustrates some of the most pressing problems encountered by African countries pursuing economic reform. This book analyses these difficulties by examining the adjustment experience in Guinea as it affected the country's overall political economy and the agricultural sector in particular. It also places this case within the broader context of African adjustment.

This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001: Bringing together geographers, planners, political scientists, economists, rural development specialists, bankers, public administrators and other development experts, this volume questions the benefits of Structural Adjustment Programmes (SAPs). It critically assesses the impact of SAPs from a wider perspective than a purely economic one, highlighting concerns about impacts of adjustments on the more vulnerable elements of society such as social welfare, the environment, labour, gender and agriculture. Revealing both the costs and benefits of the economic restructuring programme, the book also suggests alternatives to current development models, and how SAPs can be made more sustainable. An original and comprehensive addition to the collections of both students and practitioners of development.
Book Synopsis The State of World Rural Poverty by : Idriss Jazairy
Download or read book The State of World Rural Poverty written by Idriss Jazairy and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poverty is spreading. There are now as many people living in absolute poverty - almost a billion in the rural Third World alone - as lived on the entire planet only a century ago. Yet poverty continues to be shrouded in mystery. Consider that: Four-fifths of the world's poor live in rural areas; About 340 million people worldwide are currently chronically ill from malnutrition; Over 500 million do not get enough calories to do a full day's labor; At a time when enough grain is being produced to provide everyone in the world with twice the daily minimum caloric requirements, global hunger is at an all-time high; Half again as many rural women - almost 600 million - live in absolute poverty today as did 20 years. In an effort to call special attention to this urgent problem, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), a United Nations agency that has approved more than 300 development programs in almost 100 countries and is considered the world's foremost authority on issues of rural poverty, and New York University Press are proud to be present The State of World Rural Poverty. In the tradition of the World Development Report and World Resources, The State of World Rural Poverty, offers the first comprehensive look at the economic conditions and prospects of the world's rural poor. Certain to become the definitive source of data and analysis as well as an invaluable policy guide to issues involving development and poverty in underdeveloped nations, this volume incorporates research from all over the world.

Book excerpt: This volume, derived from a workshop on 'Macroeconomic policies and rural development' held at the ILO in December 1989, assesses the changing role of agriculture in economic development against the background of world economic crisis and the response to it through structural adjustment programmes. Following an introductory chapter which sets the scene, the four studies in the first part of the book deal with the effects of world economic crisis on agrarian development at the global level, as well as in the three major developing regions of the world: Africa, Asia and Latin America. The second part consists of two studies which are concerned with the longer-term issues in relation to agricultural change and economic development. This volume will help to generate fresh perspectives on the role of agriculture in economic development during the crucial decade of the 1990s.
