Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agriculture in Some of Its Relations With Chemistry, Vol. 1 of 2 Special mention needs to be made of the publications of his friend, Prof. S. W. Johnson, of New Haven. The long series of essays by this chemist which have appeared in the American Journal of Science, and the Reports of the State Board of Agriculture of Connecticut, and of the State Board of Control of the Agricultural Experiment Station at New Haven, constitute by far the most important contributions to agricultural science hitherto made by an American. They have from the first most deservedly been held in high esteem both by scientific men and by practical farmers. Free use has been made of these papers in the preparation of the present book. It has to deal with the composition of soil, air, and water, of the bodies of plants and animals, of manures and commercial fertilizers and with the chemical changes which these substances undergo. The processes involved in vital phen omena, those occurring in the soil and indeed, in most natural Opera tions, are attended by Slow chemical changes, Often so complex in character that they are difficult to unravel. The ordinary chemical student acquires in his training a familiarity with reactions, which, as a rule, proceed quickly to a definite and well-marked termination. This, indeed, is the case with the vast majority of chemical changes occurring in the industries, and, for the most part, such reactions are thoroughly understood and can be satisfactorily explained. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chemistry of Agriculture: For Students and Farmers There is at present need for a text on general agricultural chemistry which will cover the field briefly in a logical manner, giving only the facts, and not consisting of a dis connected series of quotations and tables from the very extended literature of the subject. The need for such a text has been particularly marked in teaching large classes of students at The Pennsylvania State College. As a con sequence the present book has been written. While it is intended primarily for students who have had previous training in Botany, Chemistry, Geology and Physics, it is sufficiently elementary to make it of value to any intelligent person. Concerning some of the statements made in the text it is well known that a difference of opinion exists among authorities, but it is deemed better to present them as facts rather than to give the various arguments or to omit them altogether. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Agricultural Chemistry The object of agriculture is the profitable production of useful plants and animals. Agriculture is therefore an art and not a science, since an art relates to something to be done, a science to something to be known. We may, however, speak of the science of agriculture, meaning the body of organized knowledge appertaining to this art. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course of Practical Chemistry for Agricultural Students, Vol. 1 The following exercises in Practical Agricultural Chemistry are designed primarily for the use of students taking the course for the Degree in Agricultural Science at Cambridge University. Volume I is intended to cover the first year's course on the Chemistry and Physics of the Soil, while Volume II covers the second year's course on the Chemistry of Foods. The latter volume is divided into two parts: Part I dealing with such exercises in Pure Organic Chemistry as are essential for agricultural students, and is entirely qualitative, while Part II deals with quantitative estimations and technical analyses of food stuffs. This division has been considered desirable, as students who have already taken a course in Organic Chemistry will find it unnecessary to work through Part I of Volume II. Volume III deals with the special advanced Chemistry of Insecticides and Fungicides, Food preservatives, etc. It is hoped that this division into convenient booklets will make them useful to teachers. The exercises are designed to illustrate most of the essential points in Agricultural Chemistry and to require the minimum of apparatus. A Course of Practical Work was compiled by Professor T. B. Wood some years ago for the use of his classes, and this forms the foundation of a portion of the present exercises. The Sincere thanks of the authors are due to Professor Wood and the Syndics of the University Press for their permission to utilise that material. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Food of Plants: An Introduction to Agricultural Chemistry This little book has been written as an experimental introduction to Agricultural Chemistry for beginners, and I have therefore not assumed any knowledge of chemistry on the part of the reader. On the other hand, he will have, in the course of carrying out the experiments described in the text, occasionally to perform operations which he cannot fully understand the meaning of without some little knowledge of chemistry. It would, therefore, be advisable to combine the study of the Chemistry Primer with the study of this book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Agricultural Chemistry and Geology In England, and on the continent of Europe, it has been long understood among the class who own the soil, and cultivate it by the sweat of the brow of other men, and not their personal labor, that success in husbandry must depend upon giving to the soil, in some form, what is annually taken away in cultivated crops. In America, in the older States, the same truth is at length reluctantly admitted. The census tables have shown that the wheat crop of New York, in some counties, has fallen in its average product so low as eight bushels to the acre, where formerly from thirty to forty were produced. Lands deemed inexhaustible have been cropped almost to barrenness. Large sections of territory in Virginia, formerly very productive, by a course of culture not guided by a correct knowledge of the science of Husbandry, have become utterly unproductive, and been abandoned by the original cultivators. A succession of tobacco crops raised by shoal plowing without artificial manuring, or a proper rotation with other products, exhausted the surface soil, and compelled the proprietors to seek fresh fields. Krocker's excellent hand-book, entitled Leitfaden fur die Agricultur-Chemische Analyse, which, through his generosity, was placed at I my disposal. Soon, however, I came to the conclusion that a somewhat more extensive treatment of the strictly agricultural portion would be desirable in a work of the kind published in this country. I have therefore described more exhaustively the examination of substances connected with agriculture; whilst, to avoid much increasing the size of the volume, I have almost entirely passed over the General Principles of Analytical Chemistry, with which I have assumed the reader to be already conversant.
