Book Synopsis Economics and Ecology of Diversification by : François Ruf
Download or read book Economics and Ecology of Diversification written by François Ruf and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-09-23 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The monoculture systems that have been encouraged by governments since the 1960s have led to major socio-economic and environmental crises. Now the diversification of tree crop systems is advancing throughout the tropics. Why and when does diversification take place? What categories of farmers diversify? What obstacles do they have to overcome, and how do public and private policies interfere in this process? How do land use systems and landscapes evolve as a result of this diversification? According to the authors of this volume, diversification is certainly a response to market risks, but also to the depletion of environmental resources. Ecological changes such as declining soil fertility and increasing pressure from pests, diseases and weeds intensify at the end of monoculture cycles, driving crop change and diversification of farming systems. Through 15 case studies from Africa, Latin America, Asia and the Pacific, the authors provide us with in-depth insights into the economy and ecology of family agriculture and its recent developments.

Book Synopsis Soil Management by : Jerry L. Hatfield
Download or read book Soil Management written by Jerry L. Hatfield and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-01-22 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Degradation of soils continues at a pace that will eventually create a local, regional, or even global crisis when diminished soil resources collide with increasing climate variation. It's not too late to restore our soils to a more productive state by rediscovering the value of soil management, building on our well-established and ever-expanding scientific understanding of soils. Soil management concepts have been in place since the cultivation of crops, but we need to rediscover the principles that are linked together in effective soil management. This book is unique because of its treatment of soil management based on principles—the physical, chemical, and biological processes and how together they form the foundation for soil management processes that range from tillage to nutrient management. Whether new to soil science or needing a concise reference, readers will benefit from this book's ability to integrate the science of soils with management issues and long-term conservation efforts.

Meanwhile, diversification is encouraged by governments but increasingly also by the private sector that offers free seedlings, credit, technical assistance and market outlets to farmers to encourage the adoption of certain crops in a context of increasing competition for land resources. Social changes such as the return of young people to the villages, investments of urban middle classes in plantation agriculture, aging of the rural work force and increasing population pressure also play a role in this process. Through 15 case studies from Africa, Latin America, Asia and the Pacific, the authors provide us with in-depth insights into the economy and ecology of family agriculture and its recent developments. The book targets professionals of the tropical tree crop sector, students and scientists working on economic and ecological questions of tropical land use, and anyone interested in sustainable rural development. While the case studies are from tropical contexts, the methodological approaches and discussions are also relevant to temperate agriculture.

Book Synopsis Crop Rotation and Economic Sustainability of Agriculture by : V. Nagarajan Naidu
Download or read book Crop Rotation and Economic Sustainability of Agriculture written by V. Nagarajan Naidu and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-06 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crop rotation is an innovative practice for agriculture sustainability. The study tries to make an empirical estimation of the economic sustainability of rotated farming vis-a-vis non rotated farming with respect to technical efficiency of farm output, returns to scale, productivity and profitability. The important types of rotations for the study are paddy-vegetable, paddy-banana, banana-vegetable, paddy-banana-vegetable and vegetable-vegetable. The empirical results show that the income per unit of land is very high among rotated farms. Farm productivity is closely related to the quantity and quality of the inputs particularly fertilizers, irrigation and pesticides used in cultivation. The value of Total Factor Productivity is high in rotated farms. The economic sustainability of the land enhances due to crop rotation. This book would be a good reference for academicians and researchers in the field of Economics, Agricultural Economics, ecology, environment science and related subjects to find an answer for sustainable growth in agriculture."

Book Synopsis Sustainable Intensification by : Jules N. Pretty
Download or read book Sustainable Intensification written by Jules N. Pretty and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-06-25 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continued population growth, rapidly changing consumption patterns and the impacts of climate change and environmental degradation are driving limited resources of food, energy, water and materials towards critical thresholds worldwide. These pressures are likely to be substantial across Africa, where countries will have to find innovative ways to boost crop and livestock production to avoid becoming more reliant on imports and food aid. Sustainable agricultural intensification - producing more output from the same area of land while reducing the negative environmental impacts - represents a solution for millions of African farmers. This volume presents the lessons learned from 40 sustainable agricultural intensification programmes in 20 countries across Africa, commissioned as part of the UK Government's Foresight project. Through detailed case studies, the authors of each chapter examine how to develop productive and sustainable agricultural systems and how to scale up these systems to reach many more millions of people in the future. Themes covered include crop improvements, agroforestry and soil conservation, conservation agriculture, integrated pest management, horticulture, livestock and fodder crops, aquaculture, and novel policies and partnerships.
