Although, therefore, a general agreement will be found to exist throughout the series, one or two of the writers have made no secret of their holding a much more limited view of the scope and character of Evolution than that represented by the rest. Should exception be taken to this circumstance, we would respectfully submit, that in the settlement of great vital questions it must tend in a much higher degree to healthy, thorough, and impartial discussion when debaters are left perfectly free in every thing save the essentials of the point at issue. In the hope that the following pages may be found helpful by many whose spirits are shadowed by the scepticism of the age, we now commit them. Book excerpt: Click here to visit evolutionandchristianfaith.org "I'm an evolutionary biologist and a Christian," states Stanford professor Joan Roughgarden at the outset of her groundbreaking new book, Evolution and Christian Faith: Reflections of an Evolutionary Biologist. From that perspective, she offers an elegant, deeply satisfying reconciliation of the theory of evolution and the wisdom of the Bible. Perhaps only someone with Roughgarden's unique academic standing could examine so well controversial issues such as the teaching of intelligent design in public schools, or the potential flaws in Darwin's theory of evolution. Certainly Roughgarden is uniquely suited to reference both the minutiae of scientific processes and the implication of Biblical verses. Whether the topic is mutation rates and lizards or the hidden meanings behind St. Paul's letters, Evolution and Christian Faith distils complex arguments into everyday understanding. Roughgarden has scoured the Bible and scanned the natural world, finding examples time and again, not of conflict, but of harmony. The result is an accessible and intelligent context for a Christian vision of the world that embraces science. In the ongoing debates over creationism and evolution, Evolution and Christian Faith will be seen as a work of major significance, written for contemporary readers who wonder how-or if-they can embrace scientific advances while maintaining their traditional values.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural Theology of Evolution Most persons who are disposed to be religious find it an easy thing to see the hand of God in the works of nature. To them it is pleasant and profitable to contemplate the world as Gods handiwork, and they are disposed to offer the marks of design which it shows as a convincing proof of His existence. The attempt to present this proof in a clear and orderly way has given rise to Natural Theology, a study which, until quite recently, was in high repute and esteem. It attained, perhaps, to its maximum of influence with the publication of Paley's Natural Theology, a remarkable work which put the argument from design in the plainest and clearest terms, and which was everywhere accepted as conclusive. It was accompanied and followed by many other works from which we may learn how highly Natural Theology was esteemed and how widely it was studied; of these the Bridgwater Treatises are, perhaps, the most famous. But this era of exceptional triumph and brilliancy did not last long. It may be said to have come to an end with the publication on the 24th of November, 1859, of Darwin's Origin of Species. As that book became well known the influence of Natural Theology declined. It was felt that the whole argument had lost its force, and that the appearance of plan and contrivance in Nature was fully and satisfactorily accounted for without any necessity for attributing it to conscious design. Canon Bertal Heeney is making a distinct contribution to the religious thought of ur country. Coming as they do at a time when considerable attention is being direc ted in Canada and the United States to the relationship of science to re ligion, these discourses should be a source of great help to those who have had difficulty in finding a solu tion for their religious problems in the light of modern science. This is particularly true of the young stu dent whose religious thinking at first is liable to be upset by the teachings of science. A careful analysis of the subject as given in these discourses impresses the fact that the teach ings oi natural science only tend to strengthen our belief in the fund ameutais of our Christian faith. In the beginning God created heaven and earth, and the earth was void and empty, and darkness was upon the face Of the deep; and the spirit Of God moved over the waters. God first made light, then He sepa rated the land from the waters, commanded the earth to produce the green herb, set the stars, sun and moon in the heavens, bade the waters bring forth the creeping things and birds of the air, and finally at His command, there appeared the cattle and the beasts of the field. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution Illuminating the Bible IT is evident that the material views advanced by our leading men of science are causing a class of Christians much anxiety. One object I had in writing this volume was to draw the attention of this class to the fact that our Lord clearly advanced such views, when he defined man in his natural state as a unit of Body and Mind - graphicly classed by Him as that which is born of the Flesh is Flesh, - put in contrast with the new sentiment conversion imparts, defined as one born of the Spirit, Spirit. - ]ohn iii. 6. He was instructing Nicodemus on this vital principle of Christianity, who recognised Jesus as a teacher come from God, and came to be taught by Him. Nicodemus, like many in our day, who are startled by materialism, was greatly amazed when informed of the necessity of being born again before he could see the kingdom of heaven. But such is the case. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution Explained and Compared With the Bible The Adversaries of the Doctrine of Evolution frequently say, that it has not been scientifically verified, and there fore, ought not to be accepted. Like the adversaries of the Bible, they demand evidence, which in the nature of the case cannot now be produced, and reject the light of such evidence as we do possess. But no man can do this and be truly honest. The jury box, and on their oath, is not the only place where upright men are called upon to decide their minds by Me wezlglzt of evidence. Book excerpt: Here is the revised, expanded, and updated edition for the 25th anniversary year. Its message of biblical authority is even more relevant today. This anniversary edition is an even more powerful, eye-opening book for the church! Ken Ham once again takes the lead in pointing out the looming precipice that thousands of church leaders are rushing toward; a denial of the full authority and accuracy of the Bible from its very first verse. Originally published in 1987, The Lie took a bold stand which became prophetic. Ken warned the church about the destructive effects of compromise with evolutionary/millions-of-years ideas. He warned that compromise in Genesis would undermine Scriptural authority in the culture and erode confidence in the infallibility of God's Word. Today, Christians increasingly doubt the Bible's reliability. So then do those who are considering placing their faith in Jesus, the Creator. The issues are of critical importance when you realize that today we have Christians not only confused when it comes to Genesis and the age of the earth, but now even the reality of hell, Adam as a real person, and Christ's own words about creation, marriage, and more. One compromise just leads to another, and it has to end if we want to leave a legacy of faith to future generations! --

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution and Religion: A Parent's Talks With His, Children Concerning the Moral Side of Evolution And God said: Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures and let fowl fly above the earth n the face of the expanse of the heaven. - Here, too, th most pronounced, advanced evolutionist recognizes the truth of simple statement. The normal conditions of space are not only darkness and cold, but apparently death. Life projected into the purely negative condition of non-life is as positive a phenomenon as light projected into darkness, or heat into cold. Whence that life came, again we cannot absolutely say. And God said: Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the fowl of the air and over the cattle and over all the earth. This would appear to be an admirably simple and compact statement of the crown ing positive phenomenon of creation, when interpreted in its true evolutionary sense of a gradual development. Man, who is to have dominion over all the earth, emerges first upon the scene. He is to have dominion, not only over all the other forms of animal life, but over the earth itself, with its hidden wealth, its as yet unfolded mysterious forces, which are to be subjugated to his will and become his obedient servants. He is to discover and control the positive phenomena of light. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In 'Creation and Evolution' British physicist Dr. Alan Hayward draws evidence solely from these non-Christian researchers to discredit gradual evolution and Darwin's mechanism of natural selection. Hayward also examines in detail young earth theories, flood geology, and geological testimony to an ancient earth. In the end he suggests a surprising interpretation of Genesis that argues for both a historical Adam and creation over eons of time. Bowing neither to theistic evolution nor scientific creationism, Hayward writes from the perspective of a Christian physicist committed both to a high view of Scripture and to rigorous honesty with scientific data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice An ABC Australia Best Book on Religion and Ethics of the Year Distinguished Book Award, Sociology of Religion Section of the American Sociological Association Religion in Human Evolution is a work of extraordinary ambition—a wide-ranging, nuanced probing of our biological past to discover the kinds of lives that human beings have most often imagined were worth living. It offers what is frequently seen as a forbidden theory of the origin of religion that goes deep into evolution, especially but not exclusively cultural evolution. “Of Bellah’s brilliance there can be no doubt. The sheer amount this man knows about religion is otherworldly...Bellah stands in the tradition of such stalwarts of the sociological imagination as Emile Durkheim and Max Weber. Only one word is appropriate to characterize this book’s subject as well as its substance, and that is ‘magisterial.’” —Alan Wolfe, New York Times Book Review “Religion in Human Evolution is a magnum opus founded on careful research and immersed in the ‘reflective judgment’ of one of our best thinkers and writers.” —Richard L. Wood, Commonweal
