Book Synopsis From Text to 'Lived' Resources by : Ghislaine Gueudet
Download or read book From Text to 'Lived' Resources written by Ghislaine Gueudet and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-09-06 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What kinds of curriculum materials do mathematics teachers select and use, and how? This question is complex, in a period of deep evolutions of teaching resources, with the proficiency of online resources in particular. How do teachers learn from these materials, and in which ways do they ‘tailor’ them for their use and pupil learning? Teachers collect resources, select, transform, share, implement, and revise them. Drawing from the French term « ingénierie documentaire »,we call these processes « documentation ». The literal English translation is « to work with documents », but the meaning it carries is richer. Documentation refers to the complex and interactive ways that teachers work with resources; in-class and out-of-class, individually, but also collectively.
Download or read book Tocqueville written by Lucien Jaume and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-21 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major intellectual biography of Toqueville that restores democracy in America to its essential context Many American readers like to regard Alexis de Tocqueville as an honorary American and democrat—as the young French aristocrat who came to early America and, enthralled by what he saw, proceeded to write an American book explaining democratic America to itself. Yet, as Lucien Jaume argues in this acclaimed intellectual biography, Democracy in America is best understood as a French book, written primarily for the French, and overwhelmingly concerned with France. "America," Jaume says, "was merely a pretext for studying modern society and the woes of France." For Tocqueville, in short, America was a mirror for France, a way for Tocqueville to write indirectly about his own society, to engage French thinkers and debates, and to come to terms with France's aristocratic legacy. By taking seriously the idea that Tocqueville's French context is essential for understanding Democracy in America, Jaume provides a powerful and surprising new interpretation of Tocqueville's book as well as a fresh intellectual and psychological portrait of the author. Situating Tocqueville in the context of the crisis of authority in postrevolutionary France, Jaume shows that Tocqueville was an ambivalent promoter of democracy, a man who tried to reconcile himself to the coming wave, but who was also nostalgic for the aristocratic world in which he was rooted—and who believed that it would be necessary to preserve aristocratic values in order to protect liberty under democracy. Indeed, Jaume argues that one of Tocqueville's most important and original ideas was to recognize that democracy posed the threat of a new and hidden form of despotism.

This book was released on 2010-09-21 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the dawn of the third millennium, planet Earth entered a zone of turbulence. The 2008 crisis added economic uncertainty to the threat of global warming and extreme events such as droughts, floods and cyclones, the persisting crisis of p- erty and the spectrum of pandemics and terrorism. Against this global landscape in an era of fragility, cities, already sheltering more than half of humankind, appear as Janus-faced realities, the best and worst of places, vulnerable but still full of hope and will to overcome the crisis of societal values and progress in the path of susta- able development. This book addresses the most critical challenges for cities, humanity’s collective masterpieces in danger, and analyses breakthrough responses for sustainable dev- opment, a globalisation with human face and the transition to inclusive post carbon communities. The ultimate wish is that experts, city planners, decision-makers and citizens in search of sustainable cities could find here some sources of information and inspiration to enhance the immense possibilities of cities and embrace the best possible trajectories of change.

It connects curriculum issues to classroom practices and student’s learning experience in a unique manner that goes beyond the field of curriculum studies and the field of the learning sciences. Focusing on different research traditions for conceptualizing the relationships between learning and teaching through the educational content learnt, the book presents advanced research in field of “Didactics - teaching and learning” that addresses the new challenges faced by the teaching profession. The collection of chapters in this book supports the continuous growth of comparative research on classroom practices and addresses in a novel manner the need for including international perspectives on Didactics in teacher education programs and graduate schools in education worldwide. Part 1 highlights the recent advances in the theoretical development of Didactics and more particularly the development of comparative didactics. Part 2 illustrates the diversity and complementarities of theoretical and methodological approaches for the empirical study of classroom practices. Book Synopsis Understanding Science Teachers’ Professional Knowledge Growth by : Michel Grangeat
Download or read book Understanding Science Teachers’ Professional Knowledge Growth written by Michel Grangeat and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-09 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science education has to be improved in order to become more responsive to the needs of society confronted with a rapidly changing world. Bringing science teaching up to a higher level is a key factor in this endeavour. The authors of this book think about teachers as part of the immediate and large communities and systems in which they function. They consider the development of teachers’ professional knowledge as a continuous process that depends on the communities they are committed to and participate in, the discipline they are teaching, the social context in which they perform, the instruments made available in their environment, and their day-to-day classroom experience. From this perspective, each teacher learns in an individual way, but cannot learn without relying on their colleagues and other partners. Such professional knowledge is partly tacit and explicit, and thus possessed by teachers, experts and researchers. Coordinating activity theory and models of pedagogical content knowledge (PCK), the book provides a better understanding of the growth of science teacher professional knowledge. The chapters are organised around shared perspectives and themes and based on research findings. The emerging model can inform pre-service teacher educators, researchers and students. The book results from exchanges and symposia during international conferences (ECER, ESERA) and from a two-day seminar held at Université Grenoble Alpes in March 2015.
