This book was released on 1989 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hill (policy analysis, U. of London) grapples with issues arising from the fact that farmers in Europe are on the whole not a low-income or poor sector of society, so that much of the present income support from the Common Agricultural Policy is going to people who are relatively well off. He looks at the scarce data on the income of farmers and the difficulties in gathering and analyzing it, examines the agricultural policies of Britain and the European Union, explores conceptual issues such as consumption and living standards, and reviews indicators of income from agricultural production. The third edition (first in 1989) is updated from the second in 1994 to incorporate new data and policies. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book excerpt: In this book we assemble a range of evidence from a range of sources with a view to developing an improved understanding of recent trends in agricultural productivity around the world. The fundamental purpose is to better understand the nature of the long-term growth in the supply of food and its principal determinants. We pursue this purpose from two perspectives. One is from a general interest in the world food situation in the long run. The other is from an interest in the implications of U.S. and global productivity patterns for U.S. agriculture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The decentralization of control over the vast forests of the world is moving at a rapid pace, with both positive and negative ramifications for people and forests themselves. The fresh research from a host of Asia-Pacific countries described in this book presents rich and varied experience with decentralization and provides important lessons for other regions. Beginning with historical and geographical overview chapters, the book proceeds to more in-depth coverage of the region's countries. Research findings stress rights, roles and responsibilities on the one hand, and organization, capacity-building, infrastructure and legal aspects on the other. With these overarching themes in mind, the authors take on many controversial topics and address practical challenges related to financing and reinvestment in sustainable forest management under decentralized governance. Particular efforts have been made to examine decentralization scales from the local to the national, and to address gender issues. The result is a unique examination of decentralization issues in forestry with clear lessons for policy, social equity, forest management, research, development and conservation in forested areas across the globe from the tropics to temperate regions. Book excerpt: Enhancing Agricultural Productivity and Farmer Incomes in Bihar discusses the performance of Bihar's agriculture sector in recent times and the multifarious challenges it is facing. The book explores future possibilities from the perspectives of raising agricultural productivity and farmer incomes and attaining inclusive growth. Given that doubling farmers' incomes in India is the declared agenda of the central and state governments, the insights to be gained from this book would be invaluable for researchers and policymakers. With more than 90 per cent of the operational holdings in Bihar falling under the 'marginal' category and the average size of a holding being a meagre 0.39 hectares, the viability of the small-farming regime in the state is a serious issue. This book will help readers to understand the developmental challenges not only in Bihar but also in other agriculturally backward regions that are largely dominated by small farmers. It will also help researchers to locate areas in which more research needs to be undertaken if accelerated growth of the agriculture sector and sustainable improvement of farmers' incomes are to be ensured.

The clear, concise, and readable book discusses specific events and issues, helping readers understand how radical agriculturalists think. Tweeten explains how half truths and false ideologies find their way into our political systems and bring about bad public decisions, increasing losses and causing global repercussions. This book was released on 2008 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The paper presents empirical analysis of a panel of countries to estimate an agricultural production function using a measure of capital in agriculture absent from most studies. The authors employ a heterogeneous technology framework where implemented technology is chosen jointly with inputs to interpret information obtained in the empirical analysis of panel data. The paper discusses the scope for replacing country and time effects by observed variables and the limitations of instrumental variables. The empirical results differ from those reported in the literature for cross-country studies, largely in augmenting the role of capital, in combination with productivity gains, as a driver of agricultural growth. The results indicate that total factor productivity increased at an average rate of 3.2 percent, accounting for 59 percent of overall growth. Most of the remaining gains stem from large inflows of fixed capital into agriculture. The results also suggest possible constraints to fertilizer use.
