Book excerpt: Up-to-date information, knowledge and research in progress in scientific fields related to natural production of juvenile Atlantic salmon and some other ecologically similar fluvial salmonids is contained in the 25 papers and 12 abstracts contained in this publication, which were prepared for an international symposium held in St. John's, Newfoundland. Studies relate to stream ecology, invertebrates and predators, habitat improvement, competitive effects, behaviour and dispersal, habitat and production of juvenile salmon, population dynamics and relationships of juvenile salmon estimates to smolt yields. A list of participants at the conference is also provided.

Book Synopsis The Freshwater Fishes of British Columbia by : J. D. McPhail
Download or read book The Freshwater Fishes of British Columbia written by J. D. McPhail and published by University of Alberta. This book was released on 2007-09-28 with total page 697 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The threat of deteriorating habitats and a loss of biodiversity make this reference work on the freshwater fishes of British Columbia more necessary than ever before. Eighty-one comprehensive species accounts aid accurate identification and consist of an illustration, the scientific and common names of the fish, its distinguishing characteristics, taxonomic comments, geographic distribution, a life-history summary, a habitat-use summary, and conservation comments. The book is a critical resource for biologists, naturalists, management and conservation officers, anglers, and members of the public who are concerned about our natural heritage. Foreword by Joseph S. Nelson.

Book Synopsis Otolith Microstructure Examination and Analysis by : David K. Stevenson
Download or read book Otolith Microstructure Examination and Analysis written by David K. Stevenson and published by McClain Printing Company. This book was released on 1992 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of otolith microstructure research has experienced phenomenal growth since the early 1970s and now forms the basis for hundreds of studies in early life history, age, growth, recruitment, migration, mortality and stock structure. This book represents the first effort to compile and summarize the many techniques and procedures associated with studies of otolith microstructure. The complete sequence of events, from sample collection to data analysis, is covered comprehensively, so as to be applicable to most species and situations. The various chapters include both published and unpublished procedures.

Book Synopsis Reintroduction of Fish and Wildlife Populations by : David S. Jachowski
Download or read book Reintroduction of Fish and Wildlife Populations written by David S. Jachowski and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reintroduction of Fish and Wildlife Populations provides a practical step-by-step guide to successfully planning, implementing, and evaluating the reestablishment of animal populations in former habitats or their introduction in new environments. In each chapter, experts in reintroduction biology outline a comprehensive synthesis of core concepts, issues, techniques, and perspectives. This manual and reference supports scientists and managers from fisheries and wildlife professions as they plan reintroductions, initiate releases of individuals, and manage restored populations over time. Covering a broad range of taxonomic groups, ecosystems, and global regions, this edited volume is an essential guide for academics, students, and professionals in natural resource management.

Book Synopsis Fisheries Bioengineering Symposium by : John Colt
Download or read book Fisheries Bioengineering Symposium written by John Colt and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1988 Fisheries Bioengineering Symposium, held in Portland, Oregon, USA, was based on a theme of "Problems and Solutions in Developed River Systems." The emphasis was upon developed river systems both because development is more the norm than nondevelopment and because the seemingly worst problems-hence, the biggest challenges-for fish in rivers result from development. Further, one can reasonably predict that development will continue, so unless adequate solutions are found, river-based fisheries will experience progressiverly greater problems. Most of the symposium was deveoted to solutions in two main and widely divergent topics: habitat improvement and restoration, and mitigration via hatcheries. Although these topics may seem strange bedfewllows, they define the main alternatives available to fishery managers for correcting or mitigating fishery losses in developed rivers, and they are the professional concerns of bioengineering. In this regard, it was a primary goal of the sterring committee to bring together and facilitate information exchange between biologist and engineers so that each group could gain a better appreciation for the other's perspectives, constraints, and strengths.
Book Synopsis Population Biology of Sealworm (Pseudoterranova Decipiens) in Relation to Its Intermediate and Seal Hosts by : Canada. Department of Fisheries and Oceans
Download or read book Population Biology of Sealworm (Pseudoterranova Decipiens) in Relation to Its Intermediate and Seal Hosts written by Canada. Department of Fisheries and Oceans and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sealworm parasite is found in the flesh of many fish species in the North Atlantic. Reduction in product value and the removal of this parasite costs the Canadian fishing industry alone millions of dollars annually. This report summarizes current information on the population biology of the sealworm and its intermediate and definite seal hosts to better understand the complex interactions which determine its abundance in the marine environment.
