This book was released on 2008 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A certain amount of national testing at key points in a child's school career is necessary in order to provide a standardised means of measuring educational attainment. But in recent years the Government has emphasised central control of the education system through testing and associated targets and performance tables, placing test results in a new and more complex context with wide-ranging consequences. National test results are used for a wide variety of purposes across many different levels-national, local, institutional and individual. Is the current national testing system a valid means by which to achieve these purposes. The Committee concludes that, in some cases, it is not. In particular, the use of national test results for the purpose of school accountability has resulted in some schools emphasising the maximisation of test results at the expense of a more rounded education for their pupils. A variety of classroom practices aimed at improving test results has distorted the education of some children, which may leave them unprepared for higher education and employment. 'Teaching to the test' and narrowing of the taught curriculum are widespread phenomena in schools, resulting in a disproportionate focus on the 'core' subjects of English, mathematics and science. The Government's proposals for the new single-level tests and the new emphasis on the personalised approach to learning may have some positive effects. But there is a need for structural modification of the current approach. The Committee concludes that the national testing system should be reformed to decouple these multiple purposes in such a way as to remove from schools the imperative to pursue test results at all costs. On the 14-19 diplomas, the Committee notes that teachers feel unprepared for the new qualifications and there is anxiety about the limited amount of training they are due to receive.

Book Synopsis Fairness in Educational and Psychological Testing: Examining Theoretical, Research, Practice, and Policy Implications of the 2014 Standards by : Jessica L. Jonson
Download or read book Fairness in Educational and Psychological Testing: Examining Theoretical, Research, Practice, and Policy Implications of the 2014 Standards written by Jessica L. Jonson and published by American Educational Research Association. This book was released on 2022-06-01 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines scholarship, best practice methodologies, and examples of policy and practice from various professional fields in education and psychology to illuminate the elevated emphasis on test fairness in the 2014 Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing. Together, the chapters provide a survey of critical and current issues with a view to broadening and contextualizing the fairness guidelines for different types of tests, test takers, and testing contexts. Researchers and practitioners from school psychology, clinical/counseling psychology, industrial/organizational psychology, and education will find the content useful in thinking more acutely about fairness in testing in their work. The book also has chapters that address implications for policy makers, and, in some cases, the public. These discussions are offered as a starting point for future scholarship on the theoretical, empirical, and applied aspects of fairness in testing particularly given the ever-increasing importance of addressing equity in testing.

Book Synopsis International Perspectives on Writing Curricula and Development by : Jill Jeffery
Download or read book International Perspectives on Writing Curricula and Development written by Jill Jeffery and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-05-27 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contributes to the innovation of writing education and research globally by providing crucial insights into how the structures and aims of literacy curricula vary internationally. It examines how nine education systems across five continents represent ‘good writing’ in curricula that shape students’ experiences learning to write in school. The book presents curricular analyses aimed at providing insight into how writing development can be better supported through innovative policy and research. The findings regarding international variation are presented under three broad dimensions: social and contextual factors that shape writing curricula; the discourses of writing reflected in curricula and official documents; and hallmarks of classroom practice, including the relationship with official discourse. Case study chapters present integrated inductive and deductive document analyses, findings of which are compared in a concluding, cross-case analysis chapter. Offering a detailed comparative analysis of writing research, International Perspectives on Writing Curricula and Development will be of great interest to academics, researchers and students in the fields of education, literacy and curriculum studies. It will also be relevant reading for policymakers and curriculum designers.
