Book excerpt: The East Central Europe in Exile series consists of two volumes which contain chapters written by both esteemed and renowned scholars, as well as young, aspiring researchers whose work brings a fresh, innovative approach to the study of migration. Altogether, there are thirty-eight chapters in both volumes focusing on the East Central European émigré experience in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The first volume, Transatlantic Migrations, focuses on the reasons for emigration from the lands of East Central Europe; from the Baltic to the Adriatic, the intercontinental journey, as well as on the initial adaptation and assimilation processes. The second volume is slightly different in scope, for it focuses on the aspect of negotiating new identities acquired in the adopted homeland. The authors contributing to Transatlantic Identities focus on the preservation of the East Central European identity, maintenance of contacts with the “old country”, and activities pursued on behalf of, and for the sake of, the abandoned homeland. Combined, both volumes describe the transnational processes affecting East Central European migrants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from After the Exile, Vol. 2: A Hundred Years of Jewish History and Literature Ezra's train of pilgrims, numbering thousands of defenceless people, men, women and children, who carried with them all their worldly possessions, of necessity travelled slowly. The safest route had to be chosen, in preference to the most direct. Leaving the Ahava about the middle of the first month, they did not reach their destination until the first day of the fifth. The historian and leader of this emigration makes no reference to the incidents of the march, its toils and anxieties, beyond an expression of devout thankfulness to the good Providence which had brought the arduous undertaking to a prosperous end. This book was released on 2011-11-24 with total page 1030 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume of the acclaimed Cambridge Biography of D. H. Lawrence covers the years 1912–22, the period in which Lawrence forged his reputation as one of the greatest and most controversial writers of the twentieth century. During this period Lawrence produced the trio of novels with which he was to revolutionise English fiction over the next decade. It was a painful process: Sons and Lovers was crudely cut by its publisher; The Rainbow was destroyed by court order; and Women in Love took almost three years to find a publisher. This 1996 biography tells the writing life too, tracing the illuminating relations between man and manuscript, without confusing life and art. Drawing on previously unseen information from the Cambridge Editions of the Letters and Works, and original research, fresh light is shed on questions of Lawrence's sexuality, health, quarrels and friendships, which have been more often gossiped or theorised about than scrupulously examined.

Book excerpt: Fierce Vikings and mystical Sirens face each other in a neverending battle to claim the most significant natural resource their world has to offer: the sea. For generations, Viking clans have faced Siren tribes in battles waged on land and sea. Battles that pit brute strength against sorcery, and cunning versus charm. Their war has torn apart the very world they fight over while also filling graveyards that span farther than the eye can see. But on these battlefields, you are just as likely to encounter love as you are death. These are the tales of their mythical encounters. These are the tales of the Sirens of the Norse Sea.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exile defines the Shakespearean canon, from The Two Gentlemen of Verona to The Two Noble Kinsmen . This book traces the influences on the drama of exile, examining the legal context of banishment (pursued against Catholics, gypsies and vagabonds) in early modern England; the self-consciousness of exile as an amatory trope; and the discourses by which exile could be reshaped into comedy or tragedy. Across genres, Shakespeare's plays reveal a fascination with exile as the source of linguistic crisis, shaped by the utterance of that word 'Banished'.
