Book excerpt: All Lady Victoria Kirby wants is to dig in the dirt, take notations, and record history. What she doesn’t desire is having to bumble through ballrooms and tolerate the ton’s sly insinuations about her less-than-acceptable appearance. Victoria wasn’t certain what her rather reckless father has in mind for her future. But she certainly isn’t expecting him to gamble her hand in marriage—and lose. After all he witnessed as a child, the Duke of Chase cannot bear to see a woman misused. So when the marquess wagers away his daughter to a lecher of a man, he has no choice but to step in and rescue her. Lady Victoria has a reputation for being as tart as a lemon. He might just have found the perfect wife to keep his age-old promise to never sire an heir. Surely he’d never be tempted to take this lady to bed... Then the duke meets the wild, witty, and intelligent young lady he’s bound to marry. Now trouble is certainly headed his way, and she won’t just threaten the very vow he swore to keep...she might just undo his heart, too. This book was released on 2021-02-24 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first quarter of the thirteenth century, an anonymous Flemish writer set in writing, in Old French, a chronicle of Normandy, England, Flanders and northern France. It ranged from the arrival of the Vikings in Normandy to the early years of the reign of King Henry III of England, ending with an account of the translation of the relics of St Thomas Becket to their magnificent new shrine in Canterbury Cathedral in 1220. Along the way, it adopted and formed part of a tradition of writing of the history of the dukes of Normandy and kings of England, a tradition which had developed in Latin in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, and then continued in Old French. The work is famous for vibrant and informed description of the reign of King John, in particular the period of baronial reaction, Magna Carta, ensuing civil war and the nearly-successful invasion of England by Louis, heir to the kingdom of France. Flanders supplied troops to both sides, and this Flemish author sees these events in close detail, and from the Flemish, not the French or English, point of view. He may himself have been an eyewitness, directly involved, but if not he would have known many who had fought and died in this conflict. Janet Shirley’s translation of this chronicle, the first into English, brings the work of the Anonymous of Béthune to a new audience in this volume, accompanied by an introduction and historical notes by Paul Webster.

Book excerpt: Shakespeare meets Bridgerton in this witty and lively marriage-of-inconvenience romance. As far as William Easton—the Duke of Blackheath—is concerned, love can go to the devil. Why would a man need passion when he has wealth, a stately home, and work to occupy his mind? But no one warned him that a fiery and frustratingly strong-willed activist like Lady Beatrice Haven could find a way to get under his skin...and that he might enjoy it. Lady Beatrice is determined to never marry. Ever. She would much rather fight for the rights of women and provoke the darkly handsome Duke of Blackheath, even if he does claim to be forward-thinking. After all, dukes—even gorgeous ones—are the enemy. So why does she feel such enjoyment from their heated exchanges? But everything changes when Beatrice finds herself suddenly without fortune, a husband, or even a home. Now her future depends on the very man who sets her blood boiling. Because in order to protect his esteemed rival, the Duke of Blackheath has asked for Beatrice’s hand, inviting his once-enemy into his home...and his bed.
