Much less understood are the contexts in which they were created. Who are they artists, what is the history of the tribes, where do they live and, most importantly, what do these objects mean to them? This book illuminates such topics in several descriptive essays and with masterpieces from over 90 tribes. It constitutes a comprehensive presentation of African tribal art, particularly wood sculpture and masks. The essays analyze the aesthetics of African tribal art, take a look at its anthropological significance, and then explore the six major geographical regions: the Sudanese savanna, the northern and western Guinea coast, Guinea's east coast, Atlantic equatorial Africa, the Zaire basin, and East Africa. -- From publisher's description.

Rockefeller Vision: In Pursuit of the Best in Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas," reflect on an extraordinary act of philanthropy that was also a catalyst for momentous change in the art world. In establishing the Museum of Primitive Art (MPA) in 1956—the precursor to what is today the Department of the Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas (AAOA) at the Metropolitan Museum—Nelson Rockefeller was a true pioneer, assembling what remains the greatest collection of fine art from these disparate fields. Perhaps even more important than this singular achievement, however, was Rockefeller's long campaign to place his collection at the Metropolitan Museum as a gift to the city and to the world, which he finally achieved in 1969 after nearly forty years of effort. Rockefeller's gift carried the unequivocal message that artists from Africa, Oceania, and the Americas are equal in every respect to those of their peers across the globe and throughout history. Yet until that time there was, famously, skepticism in the Western art world on this point as well as resistance from earlier generations of Metropolitan directors in viewing non-Western art as part of the institution's mission. Relying on his formidable powers of persuasion, Rockefeller eventually brokered an agreement to transfer the collections, staff, and library of the of the MPA to the Metropolitan, an astounding triumph that fundamentally changed the character of the museum, making the collections truly encyclopedic.

Book excerpt: The art of sub-Saharan Africa reveals the marvelous achievements of unknown artists over thousands of years. Their aesthetic ideal finds form in wood, ivory, fabric, bronze and iron. This illustrated study of traditional African art includes pieces from Western Sudan, the Congolese Basin, the Guinea coast, Gabon, the Democratic Republic of Congo and East and South Africa. Each piece is characterized by its own traditions and artistic forms. The earliest works date from the beginning of the first millennium, the most recent from the early 20th century. Unique and rare examples are documented, many heretofore virtually unknown.

Book excerpt: Constructing African Art Histories for the Lagoons of C?d'Ivoire is an investigation of the methods employed by art historians who study creative production in Africa. While providing insights into the rich visual arts of the Lagoon Peoples of southeastern C?d'Ivoire, this study is one of the few attempts by an Africanist to situate local and regional artistic practices in the context of the global art market, and to trace the varied receptions an African art work is given as it leaves a local context and enters an international one. Drawing on her three seasons of fieldwork among Akan populations in C?d'Ivoire, Monica Blackmun Vison?rovides a comprehensive account of a major art-producing region of Africa, and explores such topics as gender roles in performance, the role of sculpture in divination, and the interchange of arts and ideas across ethnic boundaries. The book also addresses issues inherent in research practices, such as connoisseurship and participant observation, and examines theoretical positions that have had an impact on the discipline of African art history.

Book excerpt: A companion volume to Adornment, which was also based on a Barbier-Mueller collection, this work contains 295 colour photographs of the celebrated collection of primitive sculpture housed by the Barbier-Mueller Museum, Geneva. The collection contains work from Africa, South-East Asia and the Pacific, and includes almost every known genre: shields, masks, headpieces, drums, bronzes, ancestor images, and religious idols. The accompanying text analyzes and describes the objects, and discusses in more general terms the practice of sculpture throughout history.
