Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first full account of the 20-year story of universal access and service in South Africa’s ICT sector. From 1994 the country’s first democratic government set out to redress the deep digital divide afflicting the overwhelming majority of its citizens, already poor and disenfranchised, but likewise marginalised in access to telephone infrastructure and services. By this time, an incipient global policy regime was driving reforms in the telecomms sector, and also developing good practice models for universal service. Policy diffusion thus led South Africa to adopt, adapt and implement a slew of these interventions. In particular, roll-out obligations were imposed on licensees, and a universal service fund was established. But an agency with a universal service mandate was also created; and licences in under-serviced areas were awarded. The book goes on to identify and analyse the policy success and failure of each of these interventions, and suggests some lessons to be learned.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the world's poorest inhabited continent, Africa has recently shown signs of being a source of economic growth in the coming decades, with increased foreign investment - notably from China - and huge growth in GDP from a number of African states. In contrast to the heaving weight of books focusing on business opportunities in Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America, Africa has been poorly served by academic publishing. This compendium of scholarship offers cutting-edge knowledge relating to business in Africa. The objectives of this collection include: To shed new light on the socio-cultural and historical underpinnings of business practice in Africa and their implications for promoting entrepreneurship and business behaviour in the region To consider the important constraints on business activities in Africa, and the emerging 'best practice' for redressing their real and potential impacts To facilitate a better understanding of contemporary business practice in Africa through the application of relevant theories and models, including emergent ones. The Routledge Companion to Business in Africa is a comprehensive reference resource that provides the perfect platform for embarking on research and study into Africa from the business perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the ideas, interventions (by different players) and technological revolutions that have transformed the telecom industry to propel it towards a growth cycle. Pursuing a comprehensive approach, it examines highly topical issues in depth, e.g. mobile data security via 4G, the new industrial revolution, green telecommunications, and consumer awareness of radio signals. Along with input from regulators, government organizations and industry players, expert opinion columns in each chapter clearly present the viewpoints of the industry and ministry. Several graphical tools are used throughout the book, helping readers to contemplate the text in different ways and to make concepts more “hands-on.” Readers will also gain a holistic perspective of the industry (key players, regulatory bodies and the consumer) and a clearer understanding of various policy issues and their implementation mechanisms, business dynamics and technology issues in this sector.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Africa wired up provides an important history of how two technologies – mobile calling and internet – were made available to millions of Sub-Saharan Africans and the impact they have had on their lives. The book deals with the political challenges of liberalization and privatization that needed to be in place to get these technologies built. It analyses how the mobile phone fundamentally changed communications in Sub-Saharan Africa and the ways Africans have made these technologies part of their lives. It examines critically the technologies’ impact on development practices and the key role development actors played in accelerating things like regulatory reform, fibre roll-out and mobile money. The book considers how corruption in the industry is a prism through which patronage relationships in Government can be understood. The arrival of a start-up ecosystem has the potential to break these relationships and offer a new wave of investment opportunities. The author seeks to go beyond the hype to make a provisional assessment of the kinds of changes that have happened over three decades. It examines how and why these technologies became transformative and seem to have opened out a very different future for Sub-Saharan Africa.
