Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communities of Computing is the first book-length history of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), founded in 1947 and with a membership today of 100,000 worldwide. It profiles ACM's notable SIGs, active chapters, and individual members, setting ACM's history into a rich social and political context. The book's 12 core chapters are organized into three thematic sections. "Defining the Discipline" examines the 1960s and 1970s when the field of computer science was taking form at the National Science Foundation, Stanford University, and through ACM's notable efforts in education and curriculum standards. "Broadening the Profession" looks outward into the wider society as ACM engaged with social and political issues - and as members struggled with balancing a focus on scientific issues and awareness of the wider world. Chapters examine the social turbulence surrounding the Vietnam War, debates about the women's movement, efforts for computing and community education, and international issues including professionalization and the Cold War. "Expanding Research Frontiers" profiles three areas of research activity where ACM members and ACM itself shaped notable advances in computing, including computer graphics, computer security, and hypertext. Featuring insightful profiles of notable ACM leaders, such as Edmund Berkeley, George Forsythe, Jean Sammet, Peter Denning, and Kelly Gotlieb, and honest assessments of controversial episodes, the volume deals with compelling and complex issues involving ACM and computing. It is not a narrow organizational history of ACM committees and SIGS, although much information about them is given. All chapters are original works of research. Many chapters draw on archival records of ACM's headquarters, ACM SIGs, and ACM leaders. This volume makes a permanent contribution to documenting the history of ACM and understanding its central role in the history of computing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analog computing is one of the main pillars of Unconventional Computing. Almost forgotten for decades, we now see an ever-increasing interest in electronic analog computing because it offers a path to high-performance and highly energy-efficient computing. These characteristics are of great importance in a world where vast amounts of electric energy are consumed by today’s computer systems. Analog computing can deliver efficient solutions to many computing problems, ranging from general purpose analog computation to specialised systems like analog artificial neural networks. The book “Analog Computing” has established itself over the past decade as the standard textbook on the subject and has been substantially extended in this second edition, which includes more than 300 additional bibliographical entries, and has been expanded in many areas to include much greater detail. These enhancements will confirm this book’s status as the leading work in the field. It covers the history of analog computing from the Antikythera Mechanism to recent electronic analog computers and uses a wide variety of worked examples to provide a comprehensive introduction to programming analog computers. It also describes hybrid computers, digital differential analysers, the simulation of analog computers, stochastic computers, and provides a comprehensive treatment of classic and current analog computer applications. The last chapter looks into the promising future of analog computing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is supposed to serve as a comprehensive and instructive guide through the new world of digital communication. On the physical layer optical and electrical cabling technology are described as well as wireless communication technologies. On the data link layer local area networks (LANs) are introduced together with the most popular LAN technologies such as Ethernet, Token Ring, FDDI, and ATM as well as wireless LAN technologies including IEEE 802.x, Bluetooth, or ZigBee. A wide range of WAN technologies are covered including contemporary high speed technologies like PDH and SDH up to high speed wireless WANs (WiMAX) and 4th generation wireless telephone networks LTE. Routing technologies conclude the treatment of the data link layer. Next, there is the Internet layer with the Internet protocol IP that establishes a virtual uniform network out of the net of heterogeneous networks. In detail, both versions, IPv4 as well as the successor IPv6 are covered in detail as well as ICMP, NDP, and Mobile IP. In the subsequent transport layer protocol functions are provided to offer a connection-oriented and reliable transport service on the basis of the simple and unreliable IP. The basic protocols TCP and UDP are introduced as well as NAT, the network address translation. Beside transport layer security protocols like SSL and TLS are presented. On the upmost application layer popular Internet application protocols are described like DNS, SMTP, PGP, (S)FTP, NFS, SSH, DHCP, SNMP, RTP, RTCP, RTSP, and World Wide Web.

Book excerpt: This SpringerBrief introduces the current research status on emerging multiple access schemes for mMTC, which provides an integrated reference for future research works. A brief introduction on mMTC scenario is provided, and then the suitable random access procedure is discussed. Various multiple access schemes for mMTC are also described and analyzed in detail. It assumes a background in communication theory and wireless communication fundamentals. With the thriving of Internet of Things (IoT) industry, an emerging scenario named massive machine-type communication (mMTC) is considered in the future 5G networks. One main challenge in mMTC is how to support massive connections with limited radio resources and low energy consumption. Therein, novel multiple access scheme is the key to overcome the challenge. This SpringerBrief targets researchers and engineers, who are engaged in 5G and future IoT related communications system. It can also be a used as a reference book or a secondary text for graduate students, who major in communications.

This book was released on 2011 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CSMA-based wireless mesh networks are vulnerable to collisions. Even a single unicast flow can exhibit excessive collisions from hidden terminals. Furthermore, fairness objectives for single-hop networks can cause undesirable behaviors for mesh networks. Mesh networks of wireless sensors suffer from undesirable protocol interactions due to these challenges. Inter-protocol collisions and unfair channel usage between protocols cause the behavior of one protocol to change depending on other protocols. These inter-protocol interactions complicate the design of large sensor network systems. Motivated by these problems, this dissertation presents grant-to-send, a novel collision avoidance mechanism for wireless mesh networks. Rather than announce packets it intends to send, a node using grant-to-send announces packets it expects to hear others send. This dissertation provides evidence that inverting collision avoidance in this way greatly improves wireless mesh performance without significant overhead. Grant-to-send is simple to implement, and is compatible with existing hardware. Grant-to-send is also general enough to replace protocol-specific collision avoidance mechanisms common to sensor network protocols. While these individual mechanisms only avoid intra-protocol collisions, grant-to-send provides a MAC mechanism which can address both intra- and inter-protocol collisions. This dissertation also proposes a fairness scheme for mesh networks, which can be applied to protocol fairness. The fairness scheme combines and modifies traditional flow-based fairness techniques such as fair queueing and fair scheduling. However, the complexities of wireless make these mechanisms insufficient by themselves. This dissertation therefore proposes two new mechanisms that address these limitations, channel decay and fair cancellation, and shows that the fairness scheme can significantly improve protocol fairness. Together, this dissertation shows that achieving collision avoidance and fairness can make mesh networks perform better, more reliable, and thus easier to design.
